Warner Bros. Games announced on February 25, 2025, that it would close Monolith Productions, Player First Games—the developer of MultiVersus—and Warner Bros. Games San Diego. It also canceled Monolith’s Wonder Woman game. The company said the move reflected a strategic shift toward a smaller set of major franchises; it did not disclose a full internal decision process.

What Warner Bros. Games announced

Warner Bros. Games said three studios would close: Monolith Productions, Player First Games, and Warner Bros. Games San Diego. It also said Monolith’s Wonder Woman game “will not move forward.” The company described the closures as “a strategic change in direction” and said they were not a reflection of the teams or their talent. The statement is reproduced by Gematsu and covered by PC Gamer.

The studios and projects affected

  • Player First Games developed MultiVersus. Warner Bros. Games had announced its acquisition of the studio in July 2024, less than a year before the closure announcement.
  • Warner Bros. Games San Diego supported MultiVersus production and live management, according to the publisher’s acquisition announcement.
  • Monolith Productions was associated with Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and Middle-earth: Shadow of War. Its Wonder Woman project was canceled as part of the announcement.

Warner Bros. Games described MultiVersus as a free-to-play platform fighter and a free download for PlayStation, Xbox, and PC in its July 22, 2024 acquisition announcement. Game Developer reported that the game entered Early Access in 2022, received a full release in 2024, and was scheduled to shut down at the end of May 2025; that is the outlet’s reported timeline, not independent confirmation of platform access after shutdown: Game Developer.

Why did Warner Bros. say it was closing the studios?

The company said it was concentrating development and investment on Harry Potter, Mortal Kombat, DC, and Game of Thrones. It also stated a goal of returning its games business to profitability and growth in 2025 and beyond. Those are Warner Bros. Games’ stated priorities and objectives, not independently verified explanations of the specific decision to close each studio.

The announcement does not provide a detailed account of the internal financial analysis, project reviews, or alternatives considered. It also does not establish what happened to individual employees. The available statements support the announced organizational changes and the company’s rationale at a high level, but not a more specific causal explanation.

How does WBD’s broader restructuring fit in?

Warner Bros. Discovery announced a planned two-division structure on December 12, 2024: Global Linear Networks and Streaming & Studios. The company said the former would focus on profitability and free cash flow, while the latter would focus on growth and returns on invested capital. That announcement provides corporate context, but it does not show that the restructuring caused the February 2025 studio closures. See WBD’s announcement.

In June 2025, WBD announced a proposed corporate separation and CEO David Zaslav described its intended “sharper focus and strategic flexibility.” That later statement concerned the proposed separation, not the earlier closures, and should not be read as an explanation of them.
