Kingdom Come: Deliverance II drew criticism in January 2025, weeks before its scheduled February 4, 2025 release. The two flashpoints were an optional same-sex romance for the protagonist Henry and the presence of Musa, a Black physician at King Sigismund’s court in Bohemia. Critics argued that these elements clashed with what they expected from a game set in medieval Bohemia, or that they signalled a political agenda. Warhorse’s leadership rejected the agenda charge and described both characters as storytelling decisions. A claim that the game was banned in Saudi Arabia was reported in January 2025, but the sources do not establish that any ban occurred, and the reporting does not show that the backlash measurably reduced preorders or sales.
What drove the pre-launch backlash
The criticism was not about a single scene or line of dialogue. It grew out of two character choices that were discussed heavily online in January 2025, and it quickly became a broader culture-war argument about the series’ identity. The sections below separate what each side said from what the reporting can verify.

Henry’s optional same-sex romance
The first flashpoint was an optional romance path for Henry, the protagonist. Players who objected argued that it did not belong in a historically grounded medieval setting, or that it reflected a modern ideological choice rather than the period. Online reaction also included calls to boycott the game or cancel preorders. The existence of those posts does not show how widely the view was shared.
Daniel Vávra, co-founder and creative director, responded in the PLAYzone.cz coverage that players could choose whether to pursue the romance at all. He said: “If you want Henry to try a same-sex adventure, feel free. If you don’t want to, you don’t have to. All affairs are (and were in KCD1) purely optional. The characters are perfectly aware, that it was a forbidden sin.” Vávra also said that same-sex characters had appeared in the first game, which means the sequel was not the first time the series had included them.

Musa and the representation debate
The second flashpoint was Musa, a Black physician whose story places him in Bohemia as part of King Sigismund’s court. In a March 2025 interview with CzechCrunch, CEO Martin Frývaldský said the studio expected criticism about Musa but had not expected the reaction to the romance, which it had considered uncontroversial.
Musa’s inclusion also has a history. The first game had drawn a different criticism: that it lacked minority groups and characters from outside Central Europe. Taken together, the two games produced a dispute between audiences who wanted more representation and audiences who prioritised historical authenticity. Each group read the same choice through its own expectations.

Timeline of the dispute
- January 18, 2025: ComicBook.com reported claims that the game had been banned in Saudi Arabia because of supposedly unskippable same-sex scenes. The report described the claims as part of a wider culture-war dispute.
- January 19–20, 2025: Vávra responded publicly. A contemporaneous Czech-language report quoted him saying the game had no unskippable scenes of the kind alleged, that he knew of no country where it had been banned, and that romance choices were optional.
- March 27, 2025: Frývaldský told CzechCrunch that the pre-release criticism had surprised the studio, especially the reaction to the gay romance, and that the characters were a creative storytelling choice rather than an agenda.
- January 9, 2026: Executive producer Martin Klíma told PC Gamer that it was hard to know whether the controversy had helped visibility or caused harm, and gave his personal view that it probably did not substantially affect reception, sales, or team morale.
The creators’ explanations
Warhorse’s position is that both characters were creative decisions made for the story. Vávra framed the matter as one of historical realism. Quoted in ComicBook.com, he said: “Our goal was, and still is, to show life in medieval Bohemia as it easily could have happened and to tell an interesting story.”
Frývaldský made the same argument in more direct terms. In the CzechCrunch interview he said: “Je to tvůrčí rozhodnutí, rozhodně žádná agenda” (“It’s a creative decision, definitely no agenda”; translated from Czech).

| Claim | What the reporting establishes | Status |
|---|---|---|
| The game was banned in Saudi Arabia because it contained unskippable gay scenes | Reported by ComicBook.com on January 18, 2025 as an allegation. Vávra said the game had no unskippable scenes of the kind alleged and that he knew of no country where it had been banned. | Unverified. The consulted sources include no regulator statement or other primary confirmation of a ban. |
| Henry’s romance is a central, unavoidable part of the story | Vávra said the romance was optional and that affairs were optional in both games. | Supported by the developer’s account; the reporting describes an optional path. |
| The backlash cut preorders | Vávra denied that preorders had fallen because of the backlash. Frývaldský said the boycott call did not affect sales. | Unproven. These are the developers’ statements, not an audit. |
| The controversy hurt reception or team morale | Klíma said it was hard to determine whether the controversy helped or harmed the game, and gave his personal view that it probably did not substantially affect reception, sales, or morale. | Opinion from one executive, not a study. |
Did the backlash affect sales?
The available reporting does not answer this question. Vávra denied that preorders had fallen because of the backlash, and Frývaldský said the boycott call had no effect on sales. Klíma’s January 2026 remarks were the most direct comment on the issue, but he framed them as a personal view. He said: “I would really, really like to know the answer to this one.”
No audited figure on preorder cancellations, refunds, or lost sales linked to the controversy appears in the sources. Social-media boycott calls show that some people objected, but they are not a measure of how many players changed their purchase. The accurate conclusion is that the commercial effect is unproven either way. The CEO interview mentions that the game was approaching three million copies sold at the time of publication, but that is an overall sales milestone and does not show whether the controversy had any effect.
Where the arguments diverge
Most of the disagreement comes down to four tensions. Each one explains why the same facts were read differently.
- Historical authenticity versus narrative license: critics expected the game to reflect the period closely, while the developers said they were telling a story set in a real place.
- Representation versus perceived anachronism: some players wanted more diverse characters, while others saw Musa and the romance as out of place for 15th-century Bohemia.
- Optional player choice versus objection to the content’s presence: the developers stressed that the romance was optional, but some objectors said the option itself was the problem.
- Viral claims versus verified facts: the Saudi ban story spread faster than any documented evidence for it.
Readers who want to judge the debate should keep these tensions separate. Agreeing with one side on historical taste does not settle whether a claim about a ban or a sales drop is true.
