NetEase says the game has attracted more than 80 million cumulative players since its staged launch began in China in December 2024. That milestone is different from the game’s global release, which arrived on November 14, 2025.
What is Where Winds Meet?
Developed by Everstone Studio and published by NetEase Games, Where Winds Meet is an open-world action-adventure RPG set in a wuxia-inspired world. Wuxia stories center on martial artists and heroic exploits, a fitting frame for a game built around exploration and action rather than a small, self-contained arena.

Its launch was staged rather than simultaneous worldwide: the game began launching in China in December 2024, then reached global players on November 14, 2025. NetEase listed Steam, PlayStation 5, the Epic Games Store, and the game’s official website among the global release platforms. NetEase’s worldwide launch announcement and Steam’s store listing describe that release.
Why was its 2025 launch surprising?
The contrast is the story: a large, open-world RPG arrived globally as a free-to-play game instead of requiring an upfront purchase. NetEase announced the global release as free-to-play, making the full-scale presentation and the no-cost entry point an unusual combination for players deciding what to try.

The timing also matters. The game was not a brand-new project that first appeared in 2025: it had already begun its staged launch in China in December 2024. The global launch brought it to a wider audience in November 2025, after an earlier registered-player milestone in China.
How did it become a hit?
NetEase’s reporting provides two different measures of scale. Its Q1 2025 investor presentation said the game had passed 30 million registered players as of March 2025. In its 2026 annual report, the publisher later reported more than 80 million cumulative players since the staged launch began in December 2024. The later figure is a cumulative player count, not a count of people playing at the same time or an active-player total. NetEase also said that after the global launch the game reached No. 2 on Steam’s global top-sellers chart and No. 1 in 11 regions at one point. Those are historical chart placements reported by the publisher, not current rankings. Together, the reported cumulative audience and launch-period storefront performance explain why the game could be described as a hit without confusing popularity with a live concurrency figure.
What does free-to-play mean here?
Steam’s store description says, “Gameplay content is entirely free, with monetization limited to cosmetic items.” That is the platform listing’s characterization of the game’s monetization; it should not be read as a guarantee about every future update or every player’s experience.

NetEase separately promised that the game would have “no pay-to-win mechanics to ensure a fair gameplay environment.” That is the publisher’s stated position, rather than an independent audit. The practical distinction is that the official descriptions present gameplay access as free and monetization as cosmetic, while the no-pay-to-win assurance comes from NetEase.
