First identify what “join” means: joining a friend’s party is controlled by party access and privacy settings; joining or hearing Party Channel is controlled by Fortnite’s voice-chat settings and channel selection. Work through the matching steps below, then check for an outage or error code if the problem continues.
Can’t join a friend’s Fortnite party?
Start with the party owner’s access settings. Fortnite distinguishes between being allowed into a party and being able to use its voice chat.
- Check Party Joinability. In Fortnite’s social or profile controls, look at the party’s joinability. If it is set to Invite Only, ask the owner to invite you, or to approve your join request if that option is available. Joinable lets friends and connections enter. Epic Games says Party Joinability defaults to Invite Only for players who indicate they are under 18. See Epic’s party and chat settings guidance and its Epic Parties FAQ.
- Check console invitation privacy if an Xbox player is involved. On Xbox, open Account → Privacy & online safety → Xbox privacy → View details & customize → Communication & multiplayer. Make sure Others can communicate with voice, text, or invites is not set to Block. Epic recommends checking the relevant setting on both players’ consoles if either cannot join. Follow Epic’s Xbox party-joining steps.
- Check crossplay when players use different platforms. Everyone in a cross-platform party should have crossplay enabled. Epic associates denial reason code 9 with cross-platform party members when at least one person has crossplay disabled. Use Epic’s guidance for denial reason code 9.
In the party, but can’t join or hear Party Channel?
Party membership does not automatically mean you are listening to the party’s voice channel. Fortnite has a Party Channel for people in the Epic party and a Game Channel for teammates in the same match, including people who may belong to different parties.
- Select the intended channel. Open Fortnite’s Social menu and confirm you are on Party Channel rather than Game Channel if you want to talk with your party.
- Check Fortnite voice-chat permissions. Make sure voice chat is not set to Off. Review parental-control restrictions as well: chat options can be limited by age and parental controls, and a cabined account cannot use voice or text chat until its parent or guardian completes the consent process. Epic’s party and chat settings guidance explains these controls.
- Leave console party chat if you want to use Fortnite chat. Xbox or PlayStation party chat can prevent Fortnite voice chat from working. Switch to Fortnite game chat or leave the console party chat, as appropriate for your setup. See Epic’s voice-chat troubleshooting steps.
Seeing an error code or still unable to join?
Use the exact error and the people affected to choose the next check. For error code -91, Epic recommends checking service status, verifying PC game files or clearing the console cache, checking NAT, restarting the router, and restarting the device. These are troubleshooting options, not a guarantee that any one step will resolve the issue. Follow Epic’s error code -91 guidance.

- Check Epic service status and known issues first. An outage or service problem may need to be fixed by Epic before you can join or use chat. Epic recommends checking its server status and known-issue updates; see its voice-chat troubleshooting guidance and error code -91 guidance.
- Match the symptom to the setting. If you cannot enter the party, revisit joinability, invitations, console privacy, and crossplay. If you are already in the party but cannot communicate, revisit channel selection and chat permissions.
- Use platform-specific instructions. The Xbox privacy path above applies to Xbox; for other consoles or PC, use Epic’s current instructions for your platform and game version rather than assuming the same menus or settings apply.
