A pumpkin seed does not grow a pumpkin directly. It grows a stem, and only a mature stem tries to place a pumpkin on a free block beside itself. When no pumpkin appears, the cause is almost always one of four things: the stem has not matured, it lacks light, none of its four neighbouring spaces is both open and sitting on suitable ground, or an old pumpkin is still occupying the only usable spot.
How pumpkin growth works
Pumpkin growth happens in two separate steps, and most failed farms break down at one of them.

Step one: the seed becomes a stem
Pumpkin seeds must be planted on farmland. Minecraft.net’s general seed guidance, in its “Taking Inventory: Seeds” article, describes hoeing soil into farmland before planting. A seed on any other ground will not produce a working stem. The stem then advances through growth stages, and bone meal can push it forward.
Step two: the mature stem places a pumpkin beside itself
A pumpkin is never created in the stem’s own block. Once the stem is mature, each growth attempt selects one of the four side positions around it. A pumpkin appears there only if that side is empty and the block beneath it is suitable. If the selected side is blocked or unsuitable, that attempt produces nothing, and the next attempt may pick a different side. This is why a farm can work for a while and then appear to stop once the open spaces around each stem are used up.

Checks to run, in order
Work through these checks in sequence. Each one depends on the one before it.
- Confirm the seed was planted on farmland. Soil that has not been hoed into farmland will not support a stem, so nothing else in the setup will matter until this is correct.
- Check light at the stem. The Minecraft Wiki’s “Tutorial: Pumpkin and Melon farming” gives a light level of 9 at the stem as the threshold for growth. Place torches or other light sources so that the stem block itself receives that light, not just the area around it. This figure comes from a community-maintained reference, so treat it as a working guideline and confirm it against your edition.
- Find at least one open neighbouring space with suitable ground beneath it. The same tutorial lists dirt, coarse dirt, rooted dirt, grass block, farmland, podzol, mycelium, moss block, pale moss block, mud, and muddy mangrove roots as suitable ground. A side that is solid, or that sits over an unsuitable block, cannot receive a pumpkin, even if it looks open.
- Clear any existing pumpkin. A stem will not place a second pumpkin into a position that is already occupied. Harvest the existing fruit to free that space.
- Give the area time to update. Crop growth depends on the chunk being actively ticked, which the Minecraft Wiki’s “Tutorial: Crop farming” discusses. A farm in an unloaded area will not progress.

| What you see | Most likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| No stem at all | Seed was not planted on farmland | Hoe the soil into farmland and replant |
| Stem stays small and never matures | Insufficient light at the stem, or the area is not updating | Add light so the stem block reaches the required level; confirm the chunk is loaded; bone meal can advance the stem |
| Stem is mature but no pumpkin ever appears | All four neighbouring spaces are blocked or sit on unsuitable ground | Leave at least one side open with a suitable ground block underneath |
| One pumpkin appeared, then production stopped | The existing pumpkin still occupies the only available space | Harvest the pumpkin so that position becomes available again |
| Farm works but is slow | Dry farmland or crowded stems | Hydrate the farmland and space out same-type stems |
Water and bone meal: what they do and do not change
Water is not required for pumpkins to grow. Hydrated farmland around a stem increases the growth rate, so it is worth adding when you want a faster farm, but a dry setup can still produce fruit. Adjacent stems of the same type can reduce each other’s growth rate, so spacing them apart helps speed.
Bone meal accelerates the stem’s growth stages. It does not force a pumpkin to appear. If the stem is mature and no pumpkin is forming, bone meal will not fix the problem; the cause is the placement space or the light at the stem.

Edition and version differences
The mechanics described here come from community-maintained Minecraft Wiki tutorials and Minecraft.net’s general guidance, not from a version-by-version changelog. The light threshold and the timing of chunk updates can differ between Java Edition and Bedrock Edition, and between game versions. The sources cited here do not confirm every current difference between the two editions for pumpkin stems.
If the checklist above looks correct and the pumpkins still do not appear, note your edition and game version, then compare your farm against the current Minecraft Wiki page for pumpkin farming for that version. Changes to the light level or to suitable ground blocks would be the first things to check.
