PlayStation’s current support guidance for error CE-109531-9 says, “Your Bluetooth audio device isn’t compatible with PlayStation®5 consoles.” That means a failed pairing attempt is usually a compatibility limitation, not a setting you have overlooked.
Why a Bluetooth speaker won’t pair directly with a PS5
The PS5 does not support generic Bluetooth audio output to ordinary Bluetooth speakers. PlayStation’s support page for error CE-109531-9 describes the problem as an incompatible Bluetooth audio device and recommends trying a different audio device. If your speaker is being paired to the console itself, repeated attempts or resetting the speaker are unlikely to change that compatibility limit.

Bluetooth capability on a console does not automatically mean it supports every Bluetooth device type. The relevant question is not simply whether the speaker uses Bluetooth, but whether the PS5 supports that connection for audio output. For a typical Bluetooth speaker, PlayStation’s current error guidance says it does not. So the first troubleshooting step is to identify which device the speaker is trying to connect to—not to keep searching the PS5’s menus for a hidden speaker-pairing option.
PlayStation’s PS5 FAQ, published November 9, 2020, also says third-party wireless headsets using Bluetooth would not be supported, while noting that most USB and analog headsets would be supported. That FAQ is specifically about headsets; the current CE-109531-9 support page is the more direct guidance for Bluetooth audio devices generally. The distinction matters: a headset, USB audio device, analog headset, and Bluetooth speaker can use different connection routes, so support for one kind of device does not mean generic Bluetooth audio is supported.

If the console displays CE-109531-9 during an attempt to connect an audio device, PlayStation’s explanation points to the device’s compatibility with the console. It is not evidence that your speaker is broken. The same speaker may still work with another compatible source, such as a phone, or potentially with a TV that supports Bluetooth audio output. Those are separate connections, however, and depend on the other device’s capabilities.
First, check where you are trying to connect the speaker
Before changing settings, identify the audio path you want to use. There are three different cases, and only one is a direct pairing attempt with the PS5. Thinking of the path as source, receiver, and speaker helps avoid troubleshooting the wrong connection: the PS5 sends audio to a receiving device, and that device may or may not have its own way to send audio to a speaker.
- Speaker paired to the PS5: An ordinary Bluetooth speaker is generally incompatible as a direct PS5 audio output. A pairing failure in this case is expected. Trying another pairing mode or repeating the same search does not change the console’s Bluetooth-audio support.
- Speaker connected to the TV or AV equipment: The PS5 sends audio over HDMI to a receiving TV or AV system. That equipment might provide its own way to send sound to a Bluetooth speaker, but this depends on the model and is not a Bluetooth connection between the speaker and PS5. The TV or AV system’s manual is the authority for its Bluetooth output capability and setup.
- Speaker designed for PS5: A product may use a console-supported wireless connection other than Bluetooth. Confirm its documented PS5 connection method rather than assuming that the word “wireless” means Bluetooth. The named connection route is part of compatibility, not just a technical detail.
This also explains why a speaker can appear to pair successfully with one device but fail with the PS5. The PS5’s limitation concerns direct Bluetooth audio use with the console; it does not determine whether that speaker can connect to a TV or another compatible device. Conversely, a TV’s ability to connect to the speaker does not mean the speaker has paired to the PS5.

How to use a TV or AV system as the audio route
The documented standard route is to send PS5 audio over HDMI to a TV or AV system, then use the receiving device’s supported audio outputs. Whether that device can transmit audio to your particular Bluetooth speaker is a separate compatibility question; the PS5 settings alone cannot establish it. The full chain is PS5 to TV or AV system by HDMI, then TV or AV system to speaker using a connection that equipment supports.
- Check the TV or AV system’s manual. Look for whether it can send audio to a Bluetooth speaker or other wireless audio device, and follow the manufacturer’s steps for that model. The available menus and supported devices vary, so do not assume every HDMI-connected display can perform this step. Confirm that the manual describes audio output to an external speaker, not simply Bluetooth pairing for a different purpose.
- Open the PS5 audio settings. On the console, go to Settings > Sound > Audio Output. Select the intended output device. This is where you direct console audio to the relevant output; it does not add Bluetooth audio support to the PS5.
- Set the HDMI device type when using an AV amplifier. Choose the matching HDMI device type and configure the available channel-count and speaker-position options for that system. The available choices depend on the connected equipment. Use the amplifier’s documentation to identify its configuration rather than choosing settings based on a different receiver’s menu.
- Check each leg of the chain. Confirm that the PS5 is sending audio to the HDMI-connected device, that the TV or AV system is producing sound, and that the receiver’s own Bluetooth connection to the speaker is active. If sound works through the TV’s built-in speakers but not through the Bluetooth speaker, investigate the TV-to-speaker connection rather than trying to pair that speaker to the PS5 again.
Work through the route one connection at a time. First establish that the PS5 is outputting audio to the HDMI-connected receiver. Then check whether that receiver can output to the speaker and whether its own instructions show that connection as active. If the PS5 audio is not reaching the TV or amplifier at all, the problem is earlier in the chain; if HDMI audio works but the speaker does not play, focus on the receiving device and speaker. This is a way to isolate the failing link, not a guarantee that a particular TV supports Bluetooth output.
This route is model-dependent. PlayStation documents HDMI audio output settings, but those settings do not verify Bluetooth transmission support for any particular TV, display, AV receiver, or speaker combination. Consult the manuals for the devices you own before relying on this setup. No particular TV menu sequence or speaker pairing procedure can be assumed without knowing the models.

What to try when audio still does not come through
- If the console reports CE-109531-9 while pairing the speaker: Treat it as a compatibility issue. PlayStation’s guidance identifies the Bluetooth audio device as incompatible; try a different audio device or use an HDMI-connected receiver that supports your speaker. Repeating a direct pairing attempt is unlikely to resolve a limitation the console has identified.
- If the speaker is connected to the TV: Check the TV’s Bluetooth audio instructions and confirm it supports sending sound to the speaker. A Bluetooth connection used by the TV is separate from the PS5’s HDMI output configuration. Follow the TV maker’s instructions for its model rather than relying on generic PS5 Bluetooth steps.
- If audio is missing through an AV amplifier: Return to Settings > Sound > Audio Output, select the intended output device, and check that the HDMI device type and available speaker options match the connected amplifier. PlayStation identifies channel count and speaker position among the options for an AV amplifier; consult the amplifier documentation for the appropriate configuration.
- If you have a different wireless headset or speaker: Verify its stated PS5 connection method. A USB or analog connection, or a dedicated PS5-supported wireless system, is not the same as generic Bluetooth pairing. Sony’s 2020 FAQ specifically discussed third-party Bluetooth wireless headsets and noted that most USB and analog headsets would be supported; do not treat that headset guidance as proof that every USB or wireless audio product works.
- If you are considering a Bluetooth transmitter or adapter: Do not assume it will solve direct pairing. The reviewed PlayStation guidance documents HDMI audio settings and a PlayStation Link product, but does not establish support for a generic Bluetooth transmitter or adapter. Check the instructions and compatibility claims for every device in the proposed chain before buying one.
Connection options compared
| Route | What connects to what | What is established | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct generic Bluetooth | Bluetooth speaker to PS5 | PlayStation’s current CE-109531-9 guidance says Bluetooth audio devices are not compatible with PS5 consoles. | Not a workable route for an ordinary Bluetooth speaker. |
| HDMI, then TV or AV audio output | PS5 to TV or AV system by HDMI; that device may connect to the speaker | PS5 HDMI audio settings are documented. Bluetooth output from a particular TV or AV system is not established here and must be checked in its manual. | Reusing a speaker if the receiving TV or AV system supports the required audio connection. |
| PlayStation Link | PS5 to a supported PlayStation Link device | PlayStation lists PULSE Elevate as a PS5 desktop speaker system using PlayStation Link. Its Bluetooth connectivity is for compatible separate devices, such as a TV or smartphone. | A PS5-focused wireless speaker setup that does not rely on direct Bluetooth pairing. |
The comparison comes down to three things: the connection route, the evidence that it works with PS5, and whether you want to reuse equipment or choose a system designed for the console. HDMI is documented as a PS5 audio route, but the next step from a TV or AV system to a Bluetooth speaker must be confirmed for those specific models. PlayStation Link is documented for PULSE Elevate. Direct generic Bluetooth pairing is the route PlayStation identifies as incompatible.

PlayStation lists PULSE Elevate as a desktop speaker system for PS5, PC, and Mac. Its PS5 connection uses PlayStation Link, not Bluetooth. The system also has Bluetooth connectivity for compatible separate devices, including TVs and smartphones; that does not make its PS5 connection a Bluetooth one. In other words, the fact that a product includes Bluetooth does not tell you which connection it uses with the console.
If you are choosing a wireless speaker for console use, check the manufacturer’s PS5 connection documentation before buying. Look for explicit compatibility with the console and the named connection method. Do not infer PS5 support from a product’s Bluetooth feature alone. PULSE Elevate is one documented option, not a way to make an ordinary Bluetooth speaker pair directly with the PS5.

If you are trying to pair an ordinary Bluetooth speaker directly with the PS5, the console’s Bluetooth-audio compatibility limit is the likely reason it will not connect. Use HDMI audio through a TV or AV system if that equipment supports sending sound to your speaker, or choose a speaker system with a documented PS5 connection such as PlayStation Link. If you already own a speaker, start by checking the TV or AV manual; if you are buying one, verify the console connection method before you spend money.
