If a Joy-Con slides off the Nintendo Switch rail without you pressing the release button on its back, its controller-side locking mechanism may be damaged. First slide the Joy-Con fully onto the console rail until it clicks. If it still comes off, the buckle lock is the best-supported repair target; slight movement alone does not necessarily mean it is broken.
First, identify which part will not lock
“Locked” can mean two different things: the Joy-Con attached to the console, or the wrist strap attached to the Joy-Con. The remedies are different.

- Joy-Con slides off the console: Check whether it comes off without pressing the release button on the back. That points to a possible problem with the controller’s locking mechanism.
- Joy-Con is stuck on the console: This is a detachment problem, not a latch that fails to hold. Follow Nintendo’s release-button instructions below.
- Wrist strap does not stay on: Check the strap’s alignment and slide lock; this is separate from the console attachment latch.
If the Joy-Con slides off the console rail
Reseat it and check the actual symptom
Slide the Joy-Con fully down the console’s side rail until it clicks. Nintendo Support says that if it still detaches without the rear release button being pressed, the locking mechanism may be damaged, including after a drop or other impact. Component damage may incur repair charges. Nintendo Support’s guidance on a Joy-Con that keeps detaching
A little play is not the same as a failed latch: iFixit describes slight movement as normal. Its diagnosis applies when the Joy-Con slides off easily without pressing the release button. For that specific symptom, iFixit identifies the controller’s buckle lock as the relevant part. iFixit’s Joy-Con repair resource

Choose service or a buckle-lock replacement
- Nintendo service: Choose this if you do not want to open the controller, or if the controller has visible impact damage. Service cost, eligibility and warranty outcome depend on your region and Nintendo’s assessment; the cited guidance does not establish a universal price or warranty result.
- DIY repair: The iFixit guide covers replacement of the Joy-Con buckle lock with a metal or plastic lock. It requires opening the controller and specifies a Tri-point Y00 driver for the four case screws. This is a disassembly repair, not a no-tools adjustment. The guide does not establish that either lock material lasts longer. iFixit’s Joy-Con buckle-lock replacement guide
The buckle lock is inside the controller; the console rail is a separate component. A Joy-Con that physically slides off does not, by itself, establish that the console rail needs replacement.
If the Joy-Con is stuck and will not detach
Hold the release button on the back of the Joy-Con and slide it upward. If it remains stuck, Nintendo directs you to arrange service for the console and controller. Nintendo’s instructions for a Joy-Con that cannot be detached

Match the left minus mark or right plus mark on the strap to the corresponding mark on the Joy-Con. Slide the strap down the controller rail until it clicks, then engage the strap’s slide lock. To remove it, unlock the strap and slide it upward; you do not need to press the Joy-Con’s rear release button to detach the strap. Nintendo’s Joy-Con strap instructions
