A DNS error on a Nintendo Switch means the console cannot load internet resources, and Nintendo’s support documentation states that a Domain Name System (DNS) is required for that to happen. In most cases the fix is quick and reversible: check whether the saved network is set to manual DNS, return it to Automatic if the network does not need manual values, restart, and test again. A DNS message does not prove the console’s DNS entry is wrong. Work through the steps below in order and retest after each one.
What the DNS error is telling you
DNS translates the web addresses your console requests into the numeric addresses servers actually use. When that lookup fails, the Switch can be connected to Wi‑Fi and still be unable to reach the internet. Nintendo’s DNS-setting guidance applies to Nintendo Switch 2, Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED, and it lists several possible causes beyond a wrong DNS entry: incorrect manual DNS, a problem with the internet service provider or DNS service, slow internet, a timeout, weak Wi‑Fi, and wireless interference.
Because those causes overlap, note the exact error code on screen before you change anything. Nintendo publishes separate troubleshooting pages for different codes, and the steps below link to the two that cover the most common connection-test failures.
Step-by-step fix
- Check whether other devices can get online. Open a website on a phone or laptop connected to the same network. If that device also cannot reach the internet, the problem is with the router, modem, or ISP, and changing the console’s DNS will not help. Contact your ISP or network administrator in that case. Nintendo’s guidance for this check is on its Error Code: 2811-1006 page.
- Restore Automatic DNS if you set it manually. On the console, go to System Settings → Internet → Internet Settings, select the network, then choose Change Settings → DNS Settings → Automatic. On Nintendo Switch 2, the saved list is called Saved Networks; on Nintendo Switch, it is called Registered Networks. Nintendo recommends Automatic for most home networks. The steps are documented in Nintendo’s manual DNS guide.
- Restart the console and reconnect. Restart the Switch. If the problem continues, select the Wi‑Fi network again and re-enter its password so the console runs a fresh connection test. If the test fails, the console displays an error code.
- Power-cycle the modem and router in order. Unplug the modem and the router. If the modem’s lights stay on after unplugging, it may have a backup battery; wait until those lights go off before continuing. After 30 seconds, power the modem and wait for its lights to become steady. Then power the router and wait for its lights to settle. Nintendo describes this sequence on its Error Code: 2110-3127 page.
- Test a manual DNS only when the situation calls for it. If your network administrator has given you specific DNS values, enter those. Otherwise, Nintendo’s documented example uses Primary DNS
8.8.8.8and Secondary DNS8.8.4.4. Go to the same saved network’s Change Settings → DNS Settings → Manual, enter both values, save, and run the connection test. Nintendo identifies these addresses as Google public DNS and says they are subject to Google’s Terms of Service. Treat this as a diagnostic step, and switch back to Automatic if the test does not improve. - Check wireless conditions. Move the console closer to the router and reduce nearby sources of interference. If your router broadcasts separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz network names, try connecting to the other band and run the test again.
- Escalate if the error remains. If several devices are offline, contact your ISP or network administrator. If only the router seems faulty, Nintendo advises contacting the router manufacturer about firmware updates or a factory reset. If the console still fails after these checks, contact Nintendo Support.
Automatic or manual DNS: which to use
There are two practical choices. Automatic takes the DNS settings from your router and is the setting Nintendo recommends for most home networks. Manual is for networks where a specific DNS value is required, or for the temporary test described in step 5.

| Setting | When to use it | What to enter | What to do next |
|---|---|---|---|
| Automatic | Most home networks; Nintendo’s recommended setting | Nothing; DNS comes from the router | Restart, reconnect, and run the connection test |
| Manual, network-provided | Your network administrator requires a specific DNS | The exact values the administrator supplies | Run the connection test; if it fails, confirm the values with the administrator |
| Manual, Nintendo example | Temporary test only, as shown in Nintendo’s guide | Primary 8.8.8.8, Secondary 8.8.4.4 |
Run the connection test, then return to Automatic if it is not needed |
Nintendo’s documentation does not compare public DNS services on speed, privacy, reliability, or filtering, so this article does not rank them or promise that a different DNS will make the connection faster.
Wired connections and model differences
A wired connection can help separate a Wi‑Fi problem from a network-path problem, but it is a troubleshooting option rather than a DNS fix.

- Officially Licensed by Nintendo
- LAN Adapter for Nintendo Switch
- Fast and stable wired internet connection
- Perfect for online multiplayer
- Plugs into Nintendo Switch Dock
- Docks for the original Switch do not all include a LAN port. Wired internet on those docks requires a USB LAN adapter.
- Nintendo notes that Switch Lite needs a licensed accessory to connect a USB LAN adapter, and gives the HORI Dual USB PlayStand as an example. Confirm compatibility with your exact model and accessory before buying.
- Menu labels differ by model: Nintendo Switch 2 uses Saved Networks, while Nintendo Switch uses Registered Networks. The path to DNS Settings is otherwise the same.
When the console is probably not the cause
- Other devices on the same network also cannot load websites.
- Several devices lose connection at the same time.
- The modem or router lights show an unresolved fault after a full power cycle.
- The connection test fails on every Wi‑Fi band and at every location in the home.
In these situations, contact your ISP or network administrator first. Replacing hardware is not a documented fix for this error; the documented next step is a firmware update or reset through the router maker.
Nintendo’s source material describes these steps as current as of its support pages reviewed on 2026-10-08. Menu labels and error pages can change with system updates, so if a path on your console looks different, check the linked Nintendo guide for the current labels.
