If your Microsoft account will not connect to Minecraft on PS5, first check whether your PlayStation Network (PSN) account is already linked to a different Microsoft account. Minecraft’s linking rules can also block a Microsoft account that is already associated with another PSN account. Re-entering the same code with a different account will not fix either conflict; identify the existing link before unlinking or starting over.
What the connection error usually means
Minecraft links a Microsoft account to a PSN account. The account you use for later sign-ins needs to match that existing link. Minecraft’s linking FAQ explains the association and says you must unlink the current account to change which Microsoft account is connected.
If the error says “This account is already connected,” or displays a gamertag you recognize, treat that as a clue to the account already linked to your PSN profile. Minecraft’s PlayStation sign-in troubleshooting distinguishes two cases:
- Your PSN account is linked to another Microsoft account. Try signing in with the Microsoft account associated with the gamertag or error. If you cannot access it, recover that account before changing the link.
- Your Microsoft account is linked to another PSN account. Sign in using the PSN account already associated with it, unlink it there if you intend to move it, or choose an eligible Microsoft account.
One Microsoft account cannot be used to bypass an existing account-to-account association simply by entering it again. Decide first whether you want to recover and keep the current link or deliberately change it.

Refresh the sign-in code without changing accounts
If you believe you have the right Microsoft account and there is no account-link conflict, refresh Minecraft’s code-based sign-in session. This signs you out and starts a new authorization attempt; it does not unlink the Microsoft account from PSN.
- In Minecraft on PS5, open Settings > Account.
- Select Sign out of your Microsoft Account.
- Select Sign in for free. Minecraft displays a new alphanumeric code and directs you to aka.ms/remoteconnect.
- On a separate device, open that address, enter the displayed code, and sign in to the Microsoft account you intend to use.
Use the newly displayed code rather than an earlier one. If the new attempt returns the same account-link error, return to identifying the existing linked account; repeating the code process will not change that association.

Check the Microsoft account that owns the game
If the link appears correct but sign-in continues to fail, confirm you are using the Microsoft account associated with your Minecraft purchase. Minecraft recommends checking the purchase confirmation email or the account’s Microsoft Order History. Signing in to the Xbox app with the intended account first can also help with some sign-in errors, according to Minecraft’s error troubleshooting guidance.
Address a Drowned error or other persistent failure
Minecraft describes the “Drowned” error as a Microsoft sign-in problem. Its recommended checks are to refresh the session using the steps above, update Minecraft to the latest version, and check the status of platform services. Use the official Xbox status page to see whether a service issue may be interfering.

If those checks do not resolve the error, Minecraft’s guidance says changing the Microsoft account credentials forces a fresh sign-in. Do this only for the account you have verified is the one you intend to use, and be prepared to authenticate again on other devices where it is signed in.

Unlinking is not a harmless sign-in reset. Before proceeding, consider whether you rely on cross-platform play, Realms, or Minecraft Store purchases made on platforms other than PlayStation. Minecraft warns that unlinking can make those features and purchases unavailable until another Microsoft account is linked. PlayStation Store purchases and unspent Tokens remain on the PlayStation account. Unlinking can also affect other Minecraft titles on that PlayStation console. See Minecraft’s account-linking guidance for the consequences.

Signing in is different from being eligible for multiplayer
A successful Microsoft sign-in does not by itself guarantee online multiplayer. Minecraft lists these additional requirements in its multiplayer troubleshooting guidance:
- An active premium online subscription for the console.
- A current Minecraft game version and stable internet connection.
- Matching game editions for the players trying to join one another.
- For Realms, an invitation from the Realm host.
- For child accounts, multiplayer permissions enabled in the account settings.
If Microsoft sign-in succeeds but joining a world fails, check these multiplayer conditions rather than unlinking accounts or repeatedly refreshing sign-in.
