Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If Teamfight Tactics (TFT) closes to the desktop, shows a crash report, goes black on launch, or freezes on your PC, the cause is usually something the game depends on: an outdated graphics driver, Windows or DirectX components, background software or GPU control-panel profiles that interfere with the game, or a graphics load that is too heavy for the machine. The eight checks below follow the order Riot Games Support uses in its “Troubleshooting Game Crashes” article, dated May 19, 2026.
One scope point matters before you start. That article is written primarily for League of Legends. It names Teamfight Tactics in its DirectX 9 notice and otherwise presents its steps as general game-crash guidance. None of the steps below has been shown in Riot’s material to fix TFT specifically, so change one thing at a time and retest after each change. That way you will know which change, if any, made the difference.
Identify the crash pattern first
Riot’s guide groups game crashes into four patterns. Note which one you see, because it helps you describe the problem later if you need to contact support.
- Crash to desktop: the game closes and you return to Windows without an error screen.
- Crash with a crash report: the game closes and a report window appears.
- Black screen on launch: the game opens but the display stays black.
- Full freeze: the game stops responding and cannot be used.
The eight fixes, in order
Work through these in sequence. The first ones are the least disruptive and the easiest to reverse. Restart TFT and play a short session after each step.

1. Compare your PC with the minimum system requirements
Riot directs players to check their hardware against the game’s official minimum system requirements. Look up the current requirements page on Riot’s website rather than relying on a figure from an older forum post, because requirements can change between patches. If your processor, graphics card, or memory falls below the minimum, no software fix will be reliable, and lowering settings (fix 8) is the realistic option.
2. Update the graphics driver
Riot states that video card drivers “often include vital bug fixes and/or optimizations,” and notes that drivers can be outdated when a PC or graphics card is new. To find out which GPU you have:
- Press Windows+R, type
dxdiag, and press Enter. - Open the Display tab and note the name under Device.
- Download the driver from the official site of that manufacturer: NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel. Install it, then restart.
Use the manufacturer’s own download. Third-party driver updater utilities are not part of Riot’s guidance.

3. Update Windows
Riot notes that Windows updates can address operating-system and DirectX issues that may contribute to application crashes. On Windows 11, go to Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. On Windows 10, go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update. Install the available updates and restart if Windows asks you to.

4. Check DirectX compatibility
Riot states that DirectX 9 support for both League of Legends and Teamfight Tactics ended with Patch 14.9, dated May 1, 2024. If an older guide or forum thread tells you to install DirectX 9 or an obsolete DirectX package to fix TFT, skip that step. Instead, confirm your Windows version by pressing Windows+R and entering winver, then follow Microsoft’s current DirectX guidance for that version of Windows.
5. Confirm the .NET Framework 3.5 component
Riot’s guide describes .NET Framework 3.5 as a dependency of League of Legends and says that having version 4.0 installed may not remove the need for 3.5. Riot does not establish this as a Teamfight Tactics-only requirement, so treat it as a dependency check rather than a confirmed TFT fix. To see whether it is enabled, open Control Panel > Programs > Turn Windows features on or off and look for .NET Framework 3.5 (includes .NET 2.0 and 3.0). If it is missing, enable it, or use Microsoft’s official installer if Windows cannot complete the feature install.

6. Close overlays and isolate background apps
Riot specifically warns that other programs, particularly overlay software, can cause crashes. Its examples are Skype, TeamSpeak, and Steam. Close these before launching TFT. If the crash still occurs and the cause is unclear, Riot suggests a Windows clean boot:
- Press Windows+R, type
msconfig, and open the Services tab. - Check Hide all Microsoft services, then select Disable all. Hiding Microsoft services first keeps core Windows functions running.
- On the Startup tab, select Open Task Manager and disable each startup item.
- Restart the PC and test TFT.
Afterward, re-enable the services and startup items you turned off, then restart. Leaving them disabled will make everyday use harder and can hide the cause if you forget which items you changed.

7. Reset GPU control-panel profiles
Riot says that NVIDIA Control Panel and AMD profiles can override in-game settings and interfere with the game. Riot’s guide names “AMD Catalyst Control Center,” the name used for older AMD drivers; current AMD systems use AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition. In either program, find the profile or 3D settings for the game and restore its defaults. Before you change anything, write down any custom settings you have set, so you can reapply them later if needed. This step resets profiles; it does not reinstall the driver.

- Mechanical Circular D-pad: Designed for quick reactions and accuracy in every direction, this D-pad elevates your gaming experience with superior responsiveness.
8. Lower in-game graphics settings and retest
Riot’s suggested starting point for troubleshooting is:
- Character, environment, and effects quality set to very low
- Shadows off
- A 60 FPS frame cap
- V-Sync and anti-aliasing off
- Selected HUD and interface effects disabled
These are diagnostic settings, not recommended playing settings. They reduce the graphics workload so you can see whether load is the trigger. Riot’s guide suggests testing changes in a custom game. That mode belongs to League of Legends, so for TFT, run a short session with the same settings and watch whether the crash recurs. If the game is stable, raise one setting at a time until the crash returns, then keep the highest setting that stays stable.

If none of the eight steps stops the crashes, submit a Player Support ticket through Riot’s support site and include the logs Riot asks for: an r3d log, a DirectX Diagnostic report (saved from dxdiag using the Save All Information button), and a process list. Riot’s performance support catalog also lists the Riot Repair Tool as a way to gather logs.

To make the ticket faster to act on, include the following. These are useful reporting details rather than items Riot specifically requires:
- The crash pattern (desktop crash, crash report, black screen, or freeze)
- When the crashes started and how often they occur
- Your Windows version, GPU model, and driver version
- Any recent driver, Windows, or game changes
- Which of the eight steps you tried, and what each one changed

Hardware replacement is not a first step. Nothing in Riot’s guidance points to a failing component, so work through the software and settings checks before considering any hardware changes.
