Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe usual causes are a charge-only or unreliable USB cable, a bad USB port or driver, a damaged Meta PC app, Air Link network-discovery problems, or a GPU/runtime conflict. First identify whether your Quest 2 is not detected at all, fails to pair, disconnects during play, or is detected but stuck on a black screen or three dots. Each symptom points to a different fix.
First, identify the failure
| What happens | Most likely causes |
|---|---|
| Nothing happens when you connect USB | Cable, USB port, hub, headset port, or driver |
| Windows connects, but the Meta PC app says “not connected” | USB data negotiation, cable quality, drivers, or app state |
| The PC sees the headset, but Link will not start | Headset prompt, runtime, GPU, or Air Link conflict |
| Link shows a black screen or endless three dots | GPU selection, graphics driver, runtime, or unstable transport |
| Air Link finds the PC but pairing fails | Different networks, firewall, VPN, mesh Wi-Fi, or router isolation |
| The connection drops during play | Wi-Fi interference, USB power saving, cable damage, or PC performance |
| SteamVR appears on the monitor but not in the headset | SteamVR, GPU/video configuration, or the active Link session |
“Detected” and “working in PC VR” are separate stages. If the PC detects the Quest but cannot render the Link environment, do not keep replacing cables without checking the GPU and runtime.

Safe first steps
- Restart the Quest 2 and Windows PC.
- Install pending Windows, GPU, Quest, and Meta PC-app updates.
- Close SteamVR and other VR software.
- Turn off Air Link temporarily while testing a USB connection.
- Connect the headset directly to the PC rather than through a hub, dock, monitor, or adapter.
Do not factory-reset the headset yet. A reset cannot repair a bad cable, Windows driver, router, or graphics configuration.

Check whether the cable carries data
USB-C describes the connector shape, not the cable’s data capability. A cable can charge the Quest 2 while failing to carry reliable PC data. USB 3 is the recommended baseline for wired Link, although actual behavior also depends on the port, cable length, connectors, and software. Meta community support recommends a USB 3 cable and trying another port.
#1 Best Overall
- Disconnect the headset and restart both devices.
- Use a known-good USB 3 data cable.
- On a desktop, connect it directly to a rear motherboard USB port.
- Try another port, ideally one connected to a different controller.
- Avoid front-panel ports, hubs, docking stations, monitor passthrough, and adapters during testing.
- Check whether Windows detects a USB device.
The official Meta cable is useful as a known-good reference, but it is not the only cable that can work. A compatible third-party cable should explicitly state its USB 3 data rating, fit securely, and have a practical return policy. Charging wattage alone is not evidence that it supports Link.
See Meta’s troubleshooting guidance for the recommended restart, USB-port, and repair steps: Meta community support.
Respond to the headset prompt
After connecting the cable, the headset may ask you to allow or enable Quest Link. The exact wording varies between software releases. Choose the Link option, select the connected PC if necessary, and do not choose a file-transfer mode when your goal is PC VR. If no prompt appears, open Quick Settings or the headset’s Link interface manually and check whether the computer is listed.

Repair the Meta PC application
- Open Meta’s official setup page: meta.com/quest/setup.
- Launch or download the PC setup program.
- Choose Repair if the installer offers it.
- Let the installer repair the PC components, then restart Windows.
- Open the app fully before reconnecting the Quest.
Meta’s branding and menu labels have changed from Oculus to Meta Quest Link and other current names, so use the label shown in your installation. If Repair does not help, uninstall the Meta/Oculus PC app through Windows, restart, and reinstall it from Meta’s official site. Avoid unofficial driver packages and “one-click” repair utilities.
Check USB drivers and power management
Open Start > Device Manager > Universal Serial Bus controllers. Inspect the relevant USB hubs and host controllers for warning icons. Where available, open Properties > Power Management and test with Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power disabled. Not every controller exposes this checkbox.
Some installations also contain a legacy Meta/Oculus driver location such as:

Fix Air Link pairing and dropouts
- Connect the PC to the router by Ethernet where possible.
- Connect the Quest 2 to the same local network, preferably on 5 GHz or 6 GHz Wi-Fi.
- Place the router near the play area with as few obstructions as possible.
- Do not use guest Wi-Fi or a network with client isolation enabled.
- Temporarily disable a VPN.
- Allow Meta/Oculus services through Windows Firewall. Test third-party antivirus only by temporarily disabling it when safe, then turn it back on.
- Restart the router, PC, and headset before pairing again.
Mesh systems can make the PC and headset appear to share a network name while associating them with different nodes or bands. Cellular hotspots and congested public or guest networks are poor tests for wireless VR.
Wi-Fi 6 is not universally mandatory for Meta Air Link. However, Steam’s official Quest guidance recommends Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E for Steam Link, requires the PC and headset to be on the same network, and recommends Ethernet for the PC with 5 GHz Wi-Fi for the headset: Steam’s requirements.

If Link opens to a black screen or three dots
- Confirm that the Meta PC app shows the Quest as connected.
- Close SteamVR and other VR runtimes, then restart Windows.
- Try another USB cable and port even if the app reports a connection.
- On a laptop, force the Meta runtime and VR game to the discrete GPU.
- Update the graphics driver from NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel.
- Test Air Link or Steam Link to distinguish a USB transport problem from a PC runtime or rendering problem.
For hybrid-graphics laptops, open Settings > System > Display > Graphics, add or locate the Meta/Oculus runtime and the VR game, and set them to High performance. The exact executable path varies, though older installations commonly used OVRServer_x64.exe under the Oculus support directory.
Do not treat reports that a particular Windows build or graphics-driver version universally breaks Quest Link as established fact. Community reports can identify useful possibilities, but they are not proof of a system-wide defect. If SteamVR works on the monitor but not in the headset, consult Steam’s troubleshooting guidance for GPU, display-path, and headset-rendering issues: SteamVR troubleshooting.
Confirm that the PC is suitable
- The PC must meet Meta’s current PC VR requirements.
- Use a discrete, VR-capable GPU rather than relying on weak integrated graphics.
- Make sure the Meta PC app is installed, updated, and signed in to the relevant account.
- Keep in mind that a USB-C port does not guarantee USB 3 data performance.
- On laptops, Windows may assign the runtime or game to the integrated GPU.
Meta’s hardware requirements and supported combinations can change, so check the current requirements instead of relying on an old GPU table.

Try another PC VR transport
Steam Link is a free wireless alternative for supported Quest 2 setups and is especially useful for Steam VR games. It still depends on a strong local network and does not replace every Meta PC feature. Check Steam’s official requirements.
Virtual Desktop is a paid wireless alternative with its own Quest app and PC streamer. It can be useful when the headset and PC work but Air Link is unreliable; it cannot compensate for weak Wi-Fi, an underpowered PC, or a hardware fault. See the official site.
If Steam Link works while wired Link does not, investigate the cable, USB port, drivers, and Meta app. If both wired Link and wireless options fail, prioritize the PC, network, runtime, and headset hardware rather than buying another accessory.

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11When to suspect hardware
Hardware becomes more likely when the Quest 2 is not detected on multiple known-good computers, several known-good data cables fail, or the USB-C port feels loose and works only when the plug is held at an angle. A headset that charges but never registers as a USB device may have a cable, port, or data-path problem, but charging alone does not prove the headset is healthy.
Also escalate after physical damage, moisture, unusual heat, or failure of wired Link, Air Link, and Steam Link while other devices work normally. A factory reset may be reasonable only after software, network, cable, and PC tests are exhausted; it erases local headset data and cannot fix a defective PC or cable.
What to give Meta Support
Before contacting Meta Support, record the Quest software version, Windows version, GPU and driver version, cables and USB ports tested, whether Windows detects the headset, the exact error message, and whether Air Link or Steam Link works. Also state whether another computer detects the headset. This evidence quickly separates a headset fault from a PC-side configuration problem.
