If your Roblox avatar will not turn sideways the way you expect, check the experience’s camera mode first, then confirm you are using the movement and camera controls for your device. Roblox’s official player documentation says Classic mode keeps the camera fixed unless you adjust it, while Follow mode rotates the camera with your avatar as it moves right or left. Those two modes account for many “my character won’t turn” reports, but they are not the only possible explanation, and a creator can override both.
First, pin down what “won’t turn” means
Players use the phrase for three different problems, and each one points to a different check. Decide which one you are seeing before changing any settings.
| What you see | What it usually points to | First check |
|---|---|---|
| Moving sideways, but the avatar does not face the direction of travel | Camera mode and how the experience handles facing | Compare Classic and Follow in the in-experience camera setting |
| Movement works, but the view does not swing around | Camera rotation control for your device, or a Classic camera you have not adjusted | Use the camera control listed for your device (mouse drag, secondary thumbstick, or touch-drag) |
| Neither movement nor camera responds | Input device or control scheme, or an experience-specific control setup | Check the in-experience Help menu for device-specific instructions |
Start with the camera mode
Roblox’s “In-experience Settings and Help” page for players describes the camera behavior that matters here. In its words: “While playing an experience, you can change settings and find out how to perform actions like jump or rotate the camera.” To use that page’s guidance:
- Open the in-experience menu while the game is running.
- Find the camera setting and note whether the experience is currently in Classic or Follow.
- If the setting is available, switch modes and move sideways to see which one matches the behavior you expect.
- If no setting appears, open the in-experience Help menu and look for the instructions for your device.
Classic mode
In Classic, the camera stays where it is until you move it yourself. A character can slide left or right while the view stays fixed, which looks like the avatar is refusing to turn. Rotate the camera manually to bring the view in line with your movement.

- A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
- The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
- The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.
Follow mode
In Follow, the camera rotates with the avatar as it moves right or left. If your character appears to stay still while the camera swings, you are likely in Follow and the swing is the expected behavior, not a fault. Switching back to Classic will change how the view responds to sideways movement.
When the creator has locked the camera
Roblox says players can switch between Classic and Follow only while the experience developer has not locked the camera mode. Roblox’s Creator Hub documents that creators can configure camera and movement modes, including Orbital and CameraToggle behaviors that a player may not see described in player-facing help. If the mode will not change in one game but works in another, the creator has most likely set it that way, and no player-side setting will override it.

Test the controls for your device
Roblox’s default input bindings separate movement from camera movement, so a working movement key does not prove the camera control is working. Test each one on its own.
Keyboard and mouse
- Movement: A and D move the avatar left and right.
- Camera: hold the right mouse button and drag to rotate the view. The default bindings also list the arrow keys for camera rotation.
- Mouse lock: Shift toggles mouse lock when the experience enables it. The Shift Lock Switch option is covered on the same Roblox Support page.
Gamepad
- Movement: the primary (left) thumbstick.
- Camera: the secondary (right) thumbstick.
Touch
- Movement: the virtual thumbstick on screen.
- Camera: touch and drag on the screen to change the view.
What the official documentation does not establish
Roblox’s documentation describes how these controls and modes are meant to work. It does not say why a particular player’s character behaves a particular way, and it does not offer a guaranteed fix for a stuck camera or avatar. Nothing in the official material establishes that reinstalling Roblox, changing avatar items, or buying new hardware will change the behavior. If none of the checks above explain what you see, the most useful next step is to note the game name, your device, and whether the camera mode can be changed in that experience, then check that game’s own help or community channels.
