A script mod that does nothing, or that triggers an error after you install it, usually fails for one of four reasons: the in-game mod settings are off, the file is in the wrong place in the Mods folder, the mod has not been updated for the current game version, or another mod conflicts with it. Work through those checks in that order, because the first two cost nothing to verify and resolve most installations.
Confirm your platform first
EA states that mods are available on PC and Mac only. If you play The Sims 4 on PlayStation or Xbox, script mods are not supported on that console, and no settings or file changes will make them load. If you are on PC or Mac, continue with the steps below.
Turn on both mod settings
Script mods need two separate permissions in the game. Turning on only one is a common reason they still fail.
- Launch The Sims 4 and open the Options menu.
- Select Game Options, then open the Other category.
- Enable Enable Custom Content and Mods.
- Enable Script Mods Allowed.
- Select Apply, exit the game completely, and relaunch it. The change does not take effect until you restart.
If these settings keep switching back off, EA community forum guidance names antivirus or security software as a possible cause. That guidance does not establish a single fix, so adjusting your security software’s rules for the game folder is a reasonable place to start, but the effect is not guaranteed.

Check the file location and extraction
Most failed installs come down to a file that was never extracted, or one that is nested too deep. EA’s installation guidance describes the correct sequence:
- Download the mod on PC or Mac from a trusted source.
- Unzip
.zipor.rararchives. A mod still inside its archive will not load. - Place the extracted file in the Mods folder. On Windows this is normally
DocumentsElectronic ArtsThe Sims 4Mods. - Keep
.ts4scriptfiles in the Mods folder itself or in one subfolder beneath it. EA community information says they must not sit deeper than that, so a file buried two or more folders down will be ignored. - Relaunch the game after any file change.
Check whether a game update caused the problem
If a mod worked before and stopped after a patch, the update is the likely trigger. EA’s official help article, “The Sims 4: Mods, game updates, and error codes,” explains the design behind this behavior: “By disabling Mods when we update, we try to limit any issues or problems with your gameplay.” Mods are turned off during updates, and a mod that caused no earlier problems can cause them afterward.

The fix is usually on the creator’s side. Creators may need time to publish an update, and an updated version may require a full reinstall rather than a simple overwrite. Check the creator’s compatibility statement and follow their update or reinstall instructions. A mod’s page or post that does not mention the current game version should not be assumed to work with the latest patch.
Test the base game before re-enabling mods
When you suspect an update, separate the game from the mods before you change anything else. EA’s steps for this are:

- Disable custom content and mods in Game Options > Other, then launch the game.
- Confirm the base game runs normally.
- Exit without saving. Saving while custom content and mods are disabled can remove that content from the save file.
- Check each mod’s creator page for an updated version and install it.
- Re-enable the settings, restart, and check whether the problem returns.
Back up your save files before any of this as a general precaution. Backups are not a specific fix for mod failures, but they protect progress if a save is damaged during testing.
Isolate a conflicting or dependent mod
If the base game is fine but the script mod still fails, another mod is the likely cause. EA recommends removing the mods that cause problems and checking creator sites for updated versions. EA’s update best-practices guidance also suggests adding known-compatible mods back in small batches and checking that each mod’s required dependencies are present. Gameplay and user-interface mods are the ones EA prioritizes for compatibility checks after a patch.

- Move every script mod out of the Mods folder to a temporary location.
- Restart the game and confirm it is stable.
- Return mods in small groups, restarting after each group.
- When a group causes the failure, return to that group and move its members back out one at a time.
- Check that each mod’s required dependencies are installed and current.
Batch testing is a practical method, not a guarantee. Some conflicts only appear in specific gameplay situations, so a clean test does not prove that no conflict remains.

Who to contact about a specific mod
EA does not pre-screen, endorse, or support individual mods. The mod’s creator is the authority on that mod’s compatibility with a given patch, its update timing, and its installation requirements. When a creator’s instructions conflict with general advice in this article, follow the creator’s instructions for that mod.
What this checklist cannot tell you
The exact cause of a failure depends on details this article cannot see: your platform, your installed game version, your full mod list, and the current guidance from the affected mod’s creator. Mod compatibility changes with each game patch, so creator-specific information is the most reliable source for any individual mod.
