If The Sims 4 won’t open with mods installed, first test it with mods disabled. If it launches, a mod is likely incompatible or causing the failure; check for updates and restore mods in small batches to identify it. If the game still won’t open without mods, try repairing its files through your launcher. The exact cause depends on your game version, platform, launcher, and error.
First, test The Sims 4 without mods
- Disable mods, then launch the game. Custom content will not appear during this test. EA recommends confirming that the game works with mods turned off before adding them back. EA’s mod and game-update guidance explains this process.
- If the game opens, exit without saving before restoring your mods. A save made while modded content is disabled may lose content associated with those mods.
- If it still will not open, leave mods disabled and go to the repair steps below.
If it opens without mods, find the incompatible file
Game updates can make previously working mods incompatible. Before restoring anything, check each creator’s page for an updated version or compatibility information, and follow the creator’s replacement instructions. EA disables mods after updates because older files may cause problems.

Restore gameplay mods first
Add back updated gameplay mods before custom content, testing the game after each small batch. EA’s troubleshooting guidance says gameplay mods are more likely to cause problems than custom content.
Use the 50/50 method
- Move a small batch of compatible mods into the Mods folder and try launching.
- If the game opens, test another batch. If it fails, divide the batch that triggered the failure into smaller groups.
- Repeat until one mod, or a small combination of mods, is responsible. Remove or replace the problem file, then test the remaining mods.
Keep track of which files you test so you can return to a known-working set. If no individual file reproduces the issue, test combinations: some conflicts occur only when particular mods are installed together.

If the game still will not open without mods
With mods disabled, use your storefront’s repair or file-verification option. The menu differs by launcher; EA’s community troubleshooting guide covers repair or verification routes for the EA app, Epic Games, and Steam: Sims 4 mods and custom-content troubleshooting. If repair does not help, note the exact error and where launch stops before seeking platform-specific support.
Check that mods are supported on your platform
EA supports Sims 4 mods on PC and Mac, not PlayStation or Xbox. EA uses “Mods” as an umbrella term for player-created content: Custom Content (CC), such as clothing and objects, and Game Mods that add features or change functionality, sometimes using script code. EA’s Sims 4 mod installation guide describes the Mods folder inside the Electronic Arts/The Sims 4 user folder and the Game Options setting for enabling Custom Content and Mods.
