Then make sure the download is extracted, the files are in the game’s Mods folder, and custom content is enabled in Game Options. Relaunch the game after changing the setting. If the problem began after an update, the file may need an update too.
First, check what kind of missing content you mean
Custom content usually means player-made clothing or objects, such as hair, clothes, and furniture. Game mods add or change functionality. The installation checks below are for The Sims 4; the title alone doesn’t identify your game version or device. EA’s mod installation guide explains the distinction.

If you mean a Sim or Lot downloaded from the Gallery, see the Gallery-specific check below: its custom content may be a separate dependency.
Check these six causes in order
1. You’re playing on a console
EA says The Sims 4 mods are available on PC and Mac, not PlayStation or Xbox. If you’re playing on console, moving files or changing settings won’t make PC/Mac mods appear.

2. The download is still compressed
If the download is a .zip or .rar archive, extract it first. Put the extracted mod or CC file in the Mods folder, not the archive itself. EA’s installation instructions cover this step.
3. The file is in the wrong folder
Place the extracted file in the Mods folder inside your Electronic Arts/The Sims 4 user folder. If the Mods folder isn’t there, EA says you can create it. A file elsewhere on your computer won’t load just because it has been downloaded.

4. Custom content is disabled, or the game hasn’t been relaunched
- Open Game Options.
- Select Other.
- Enable Enable Custom Content and Mods.
- Apply the change and relaunch the game.
Enabling the option without restarting may not be enough for the game to load the content.
5. A game update disabled or broke the file
EA says updates disable mods; an older file may also be incompatible with the current game version. Check the creator’s compatibility notes and install an updated version if one is available. EA recommends first checking that the game works with mods disabled. If you do that, exit without saving before re-enabling CC and mods: EA warns that saving while mods are disabled can remove that content from the save. Follow EA’s update and mod troubleshooting guidance for the safe sequence.

6. Another file is causing a conflict
If the folder and setting are correct but the problem remains, test the files in batches. Remove the mods, add a batch back, and launch the game. If the issue returns, split that batch and repeat until you identify the file or group causing it. EA advises removing game mods before custom content because game mods are more likely to cause issues.

A Gallery download may rely on custom or exclusive content that isn’t included with the Sim or Lot. EA says that content won’t appear unless it is installed on your computer. If you already have the required content installed but it’s still missing, restarting the game may help. See EA’s Gallery guidance.

Quick diagnosis
- Playing on PlayStation or Xbox: EA does not support mods on those platforms.
- Downloaded a ZIP or RAR: Extract it before placing the files in Mods.
- Content doesn’t load at all: Verify the Mods folder, enable the setting, and relaunch.
- It stopped after an update: Check the creator’s compatibility notes and update the file if needed.
- Only one item or group causes trouble: Use batch testing to isolate a conflict.
- A Gallery Sim or Lot looks different: Check whether its custom content is installed locally.
