A DayZ server that repeatedly restarts is usually doing one of four things: following an intentional schedule or watchdog rule, crashing, failing during startup because of configuration or missing software, or being terminated by an external service such as a hosting panel, service manager, or security control. The fastest fix is to correlate the exact restart time with the server profile logs, then change one variable per test. A restart by itself is not a diagnosis.

Start by classifying the restart
Record the exact time of one restart before changing files or launch parameters. Then determine what the player and process actually did. Did the server close and a watchdog immediately relaunch it? Did a control panel announce a scheduled restart? Did the process disappear with an error? Did it fail before a mission loaded? These observations separate four failure classes.

The timestamp and exit context matter more than the fact that a restart happened. A clean, periodic exit points in a different direction from a SCRIPT (E) error or a missing DLL.
Put every useful log in one known folder
Bohemia Interactive’s server-configuration documentation defines -profiles as the folder containing server logs. Use an explicit path so you do not accidentally inspect an old installation, a provider’s default directory, or a different instance.

A diagnostic launch line should include:
-profiles=<known folder> -dologs -adminlog -netlogAdd -freezecheck while investigating a hang. The option stops a server that has been frozen for more than five minutes and creates a dump file, which can distinguish a true lock-up from a normal restart.

Preserve the evidence before changing anything
- Write down the restart time, time zone, player activity, and whether the process window closed.
- Copy the newest RPT, ADM, script, crash, and BattlEye files to a separate timestamped folder.
- Save the current launch command and the exact
-modand-serverModlists. - Only then edit a configuration file, remove a mod, or restart the service for another test.
Keeping one archive per attempt prevents a later restart from overwriting the only useful error and lets you compare a clean run with a failing run.

Read the timeline instead of searching for one magic error
Open the newest RPT and work upward from the final timestamp. Look for the last normal operation, the first warning, and the final exit message. Then compare that time with the ADM, script, crash, BattlEye, panel, and service-manager records. The first unusual event is usually more useful than repeated messages emitted after the failure has already begun.
Startup-time failure
If the process exits before a mission loads, classify it as startup or configuration failure first. A malformed serverDZ.cfg, an invalid path, an unavailable mod, or a missing runtime can terminate the process before any in-game action occurs. Do not begin by blaming a player action or a gameplay script.
In-session failure
If players can join and the server later closes, compare the last in-session RPT and script entries with crash and BattlEye output. A repeatable failure after one mod’s feature is used is a useful lead, but timing alone does not prove that the mod caused the exit.

Clean periodic exit
When the interval is exact and logs end normally, inspect scheduled restarts and watchdog rules before reinstalling files. A hosting panel can stop a process that is otherwise healthy, and two managers can create a loop in which one stops the server while the other immediately starts it.
Fix configuration and runtime failures first
Validate serverDZ.cfg and paths
Recheck syntax after every edit, including commas, quotation marks, braces, semicolons, and the spelling and location of referenced files. Confirm that the account running the service can read the configuration, mission, profile, and mod directories. A path that works interactively may fail under a service account with different permissions.
Remove stale launch options while testing. The official DayZ troubleshooting FAQ recommends removing launch options and verifying the game files through Steam when the installation may be damaged. Perform those checks before layering additional parameters onto an already failing command.
Repair a missing Microsoft runtime
If the RPT names a missing DLL or a runtime error and the process exits immediately, install or repair the required Microsoft Visual C++ x64 runtime, then restart the service. The community troubleshooting index identifies missing Visual C++ runtime files as an immediate-crash cause. Keep the original error and the post-repair RPT so you can verify that the failure actually changed.
Verify files without destroying persistence
Use Steam’s file-verification function for the server/game installation when files may be incomplete or altered. Back up persistence regularly before repair work. The official troubleshooting guidance warns that crashes can put persistence at risk; a repair is not a substitute for a current backup.

Isolate mods without guessing
Mods are a common suspect because they change scripts, assets, and startup parameters, but a mod should be treated as a hypothesis until the logs and a controlled test support it.
- Record the complete current
-modand-serverModlists and their order. - Remove recently added or updated entries, or temporarily start a clean server with no optional mods.
- Run the same workload and wait through the interval in which the restart normally occurs.
- If the clean run is stable, add one mod or one tightly related group back and repeat the test.
- When a failure returns, compare its RPT and script timestamps with the clean archive before changing anything else.
A SCRIPT (E) entry in the script or RPT log indicates a script fault. It does not, by itself, prove that every restart is mod-caused: the script error may be recoverable, a different component may terminate the process, or the restart may be an unrelated schedule. Establish causality by reproducing the failure with and without the same entry.
Use a simple comparison matrix

Keep the mission, player load, restart interval, and launch command constant between tests. Changing several mods and the configuration in one restart destroys the causal signal.
Resolve BattlEye service failures
BattlEye’s FAQ explains that service-installation or startup errors occur when something on the system prevents the BE Service from installing or starting, and that the service is required for BattlEye-enabled servers. If the log shows a BattlEye service error at the same time as the restart, treat it as a service or security problem rather than a gameplay crash.
Check the service files and permissions
Review antivirus and firewall events and create narrowly scoped exclusions for the BattlEye components used by the installation: BEService.exe, BEService_x64.exe, and the BattlEye service directory. Confirm that the account launching the server can create and start the service.

BattlEye’s FAQ recommends allowing the service, deleting the BattlEye service directory so it can be recreated, and retrying with appropriate permissions. Copy the current logs first, stop all DayZ-related processes, remove only the BattlEye service directory specified by the installation, and then start the server with the required permissions. If the service still fails, the security product or account policy may be undoing the change; check its event record at the exact failure time.
Handle crashes, hangs, and dump files
Crash during play
For an in-session crash, preserve the crash file and the final RPT before launching again. Note whether the crash follows a particular action, location, player count, or mod feature, but do not present correlation as proof. Reproduce with the smallest configuration that still fails, using one change per restart.
Apparent freeze
A server that stops responding is different from a process that exits. Enable -freezecheck for a controlled run; a freeze lasting more than five minutes should produce a dump. The dump and the surrounding RPT entries can show whether the server was stuck long enough to trigger the check or whether an external manager stopped it first.
Protect persistence while troubleshooting
Make a dated copy of persistence before repeated crash tests and keep the backup outside the live server directory. The official troubleshooting FAQ recommends regular persistence backups and crash-dump reporting because a crash can risk a persistence wipe. Do not delete persistence as a first-line fix: doing so removes evidence and may destroy the data you are trying to protect.

- Hosting-panel schedules and maintenance jobs.
- Operating-system service-manager recovery actions.
- Separate watchdog scripts or monitoring agents.
- Antivirus, firewall, update, or permission controls.
- A second DayZ instance using the same profile, port, or persistence location.
Disable only one control at a time and observe a complete test interval. If a panel reports a scheduled restart while the RPT shows no crash, the panel is the current cause even if the server is otherwise healthy. If two watchdogs are configured, one may interpret the other’s startup delay as a failure and create a restart loop.
Check public-hive schedule rules
Bohemia Interactive’s public-hive hosting rules state, “Restart server more than 5 times per day” is prohibited, and state that automatic-restart settings in a game-server-provider control panel may not be set below or above 12 hours. Those figures come from the documented 2018 ruleset and apply to that public-hive hosting context; confirm the current rules and your provider’s policy before changing a schedule. Do not use an aggressive restart timer to mask a crash or freeze.
A controlled recovery sequence
Use this order when the cause is still unclear. It minimizes destructive changes and preserves a useful comparison for each restart.
- Record the exact restart time, process behavior, player activity, and any panel message.
- Set an explicit profile directory and enable
-dologs -adminlog -netlog; add-freezecheckonly for hang testing. - Archive the newest RPT, ADM, script, crash, and BattlEye files immediately after the next event.
- Check whether the exit occurred before mission load or during a live session.
- Validate
serverDZ.cfg, paths, permissions, and the complete launch command. - Remove stale launch options and verify installation files through Steam.
- Repair the Microsoft Visual C++ x64 runtime if the log reports a missing DLL or runtime error.
- Run once without recently changed
-modand-serverModentries, then reintroduce them individually. - For BattlEye errors, check security exclusions and permissions for
BEService.exe,BEService_x64.exe, and the service directory; recreate that directory only after preserving logs. - Compare panel, watchdog, service-manager, and security timestamps with the server logs, and remove duplicate restart authority.
- Back up persistence before further crash tests and retain every archive so a later change can be reversed.
How to know the fix is real
A successful repair is not simply one uninterrupted launch. Keep the same mission, workload, profile path, and launch command while observing the interval that previously failed. The evidence should show that the original error disappeared, the process remained alive beyond the former restart point, and no external manager immediately terminated it. Then restore normal settings one change at a time, retaining the clean archive as your reference.
