Why Your Nether Portal Takes You Somewhere Else (and How to Fix It)

A Nether portal that drops you in the wrong place is usually working from coordinates, not broken. Here is how the game picks a destination and how to realign your portals.

A Nether portal that drops you in the wrong place is usually not broken. Minecraft does not send you through the portal you think of as your pair. It calculates a target point from where you stepped in, looks for a usable portal near that point in the other dimension, and builds a new one if it finds nothing suitable. Most unexpected destinations come from one of three causes: a closer portal that wins the lookup, a blocked landing spot that forces a portal somewhere else, or a version-specific search rule.

How the game chooses a destination

Portal travel is coordinate-based. The position of the portal you enter is converted into a target position in the other dimension, because the Nether is scaled 8:1 against the Overworld. Y is never converted.

  • Overworld to Nether: divide X and Z by 8. Keep Y the same.
  • Nether to Overworld: multiply X and Z by 8. Keep Y the same.

For example, a portal you enter at X 800, Y 64, Z -400 in the Overworld targets X 100, Y 64, Z -50 in the Nether. Leaving the Nether through a portal at X 100, Y 64, Z -50 targets X 800, Y 64, Z -400 in the Overworld.

Mojang’s Bedrock issue description states the principle directly: “The game uses the coordinates of the entry point to calculate where to go in the target dimension.”

Why you land in the wrong place

A closer portal wins the lookup

The game does not look for the portal you built as your pair. It uses the nearest eligible portal to the calculated point. If two portals sit in the same area, or an older portal is closer to the converted coordinates than the one you intended, the game will take you there. Return travel can also select a different Overworld portal than the one you originally left from.

The target spot is blocked

If the converted coordinates fall inside solid netherrack, there may be no room to build a portal nearby. The game then generates a portal at a displaced location. That portal may be far enough away that it does not link back to the original, so stepping through it appears to send you to a random spot. Mojang’s Bedrock issue MCPE-39609 describes this exact displacement and lists its resolution as “Works As Intended.”

Java’s search range changed in 1.16.2

Mojang’s Java issue MCPE-151181 states that Java Edition changed portal behavior in 1.16.2. The Nether search range became proportional to the dimension scale: 16 blocks in the Nether, compared with 128 blocks in the Overworld. The portal point-of-interest system also began caching links until the portal was destroyed. A stale link can therefore persist after you rebuild a pair, until the portal it points to is removed.

Fix it step by step

  1. Record the source portal’s coordinates. In Java Edition, press F3 to open the debug screen and read X, Y, and Z. In Bedrock, turn on the Show Coordinates option in Settings; its location varies by version.
  2. Convert X and Z using the scale from the first section. Divide Overworld values by 8 for the Nether, or multiply Nether values by 8 for the Overworld. Leave Y unchanged.
  3. Check for other portals near the converted point. Walk to the calculated location and look for any portal within the nearby area. A competing portal there explains most wrong destinations.
  4. Build a portal at the converted coordinates if none exists. Construct an obsidian frame and light it with flint and steel. Set it as close to the calculated point as you can.
  5. Realign a displaced portal. If the game already generated a portal somewhere it cannot return from, walk to it, note its coordinates, and build your return portal near that spot.
  6. Remove unwanted portals. Any extra portal that sits near a converted point can be the one the game selects. Breaking it removes that candidate.
  7. If the problem persists, confirm your edition and version before applying any search-radius reasoning. The sections below explain where the behavior differs.

Java and Bedrock do not behave the same

Mojang’s records describe the linking mechanism, but they do not measure how often wrong destinations occur, and they do not provide a complete version-by-version list. Use the table below to see which evidence applies to which edition.

Aspect Java Edition Bedrock Edition
Nether search range Changed in 1.16.2 to a range proportional to the dimension scale: 16 blocks in the Nether versus 128 in the Overworld (Mojang issue MCPE-151181) The 1.16.2 changes had not been ported to Bedrock when MCPE-151181 was filed; the record references several historical Bedrock versions, so current behavior is not established by it
Cached links Portal point-of-interest system caches links until the portal is destroyed (MCPE-151181) Not stated in the cited Bedrock record
Displaced portal behavior Not stated in the cited Java records Described in MCPE-39609, resolved as “Works As Intended”
Legacy Java report A legacy issue titled “Portal linking radius in Nether reduced from 128 to 16 blocks” supports the historical change, but its full text could not be checked for this article Not applicable

Community forum threads often repeat the same explanations about nearest-portal selection and displaced portals. They are useful for troubleshooting, but they are player accounts rather than official documentation. If your build matches none of the versions described above, the coordinate method and the portal checks in the steps still apply, while exact search distances should be treated as version-specific.
