Your Switch can show free space and still reject a download because the free space may be on the wrong storage destination. The console’s system memory and a microSD card are separate: downloaded games and other software data can use either, but game save data stays in system memory. Check both locations before deleting anything or buying a card.
Why the free-space display can be misleading
A download or update needs room in the storage destination being used for that operation. Free space shown for the microSD card does not mean the console’s system memory has enough room, or vice versa. Nintendo’s guidance treats the two as separate locations, so check each one in System Settings → Data Management.
Downloaded software, updates, downloadable content (DLC), and screenshots can be stored in system memory or on a microSD card. Save data is different: Nintendo says game saves cannot be saved or copied to a microSD card. A card can expand space for software and captures, but it cannot relieve a shortage of system memory needed for saves.
Check what the download or update needs
Storage requirements vary by game. Check the specific title’s requirement in Nintendo eShop or on its physical packaging, then compare it with the available space in the relevant location under System Settings → Data Management. Having enough room overall is not the same as having enough room where the current operation needs it.

Free space without losing game progress
Archive downloadable software
Archiving removes the software from the console to free storage while leaving its save data intact. You can redownload purchased software using the Nintendo Account used to buy it. This is useful if you want to keep your progress but do not need the game installed right now. Nintendo’s steps are in How to Manage or Delete Downloadable Software on Nintendo Switch.
Delete items you no longer need
You can also remove downloadable software or other stored data you no longer want. Nintendo says deleting downloadable software does not delete its save data. Before removing anything, check the item and destination in Data Management so you know what you are freeing and whether it is software or saved progress.

When a microSD card can help
If software storage is the constraint and you want more room for downloads, updates, DLC, or screenshots, a microSD card is one option. It is not a solution for save-data storage, because saves remain in system memory. Nintendo’s support guidance does not establish a particular card brand, capacity, or speed class, so verify compatibility for your Switch model before choosing a card.
Whether to archive software or expand storage depends on what is full and how you use the console. Archiving is a no-cost way to free space if you are comfortable redownloading a game later; a card adds capacity for software data and captures. Neither changes the location of save data.

- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
If the warning continues
If Data Management shows enough available space in the relevant destination and the error still appears, Nintendo’s cited guidance does not identify a cause for an individual console. Note the exact message and contact Nintendo Support rather than assuming the card or console is faulty. Nintendo also provides a UK version of its not-enough-space download guidance.
