If a Palworld dedicated server ignores your changes, the usual cause is not the setting itself. It is almost always the wrong file, the wrong platform directory, malformed OptionSettings syntax, a missing full restart, or a hosting panel that rewrites the file. Stop the server, edit the active PalWorldSettings.ini, preserve its required two-line structure, restart completely, and verify the result in-game.

Fix the problem in one pass
Work through these steps in order. Each one rules out a failure mode documented in the official Palworld Server Guide, Palworld Wiki formatting guidance, and current hosting references.

- Stop the dedicated server completely. Do not edit while the server process is running. A live process will not reload the file, and a panel may overwrite your changes when it stops or starts the instance.
- Open the active configuration file. Edit
Pal/Saved/Config/WindowsServer/PalWorldSettings.inion a Windows server orPal/Saved/Config/LinuxServer/PalWorldSettings.inion a Linux server. The similarly namedDefaultPalWorldSettings.iniis a factory template, not the file read by the running world. - Preserve the required layout. The file must have the section header
[/Script/Pal.PalGameWorldSettings]on the first line. The second line must contain the completeOptionSettings=(...)string. Palworld Wiki guidance describesPalWorldSettings.inias a two-line file; do not split that settings string into separate lines. - Check every character in the settings string. Verify commas, quotation marks, parentheses, key names, and value types. One malformed entry can make the server discard the file and use defaults rather than applying the valid-looking entries around it.
- Save the file, then perform a full restart. Stop the process, wait for it to exit, and start it again. Saving a file, pressing an “apply” button without a restart, or reconnecting to an already running process does not reload world settings.
- Verify in the game. Join the server after startup and test the particular behavior you changed. If it still appears unchanged, use the diagnostic branches below instead of changing several variables at once.
Use the file the server actually reads
Palworld has two files whose names are easy to confuse. The distinction explains a large share of “settings ignored” reports.

The official Palworld Server Guide explicitly warns that editing DefaultPalWorldSettings.ini will not affect the changes. A common mistake is to search the installation directory, find the default file first, edit it, and then assume the dedicated server should see those values. It will not, unless you use the template to populate the platform-specific active file.

Platform names matter as well. A Windows installation uses the WindowsServer directory; a Linux installation uses LinuxServer. If you place a correctly formatted file in the other directory, the server can start normally while continuing to read its own file with unchanged values.
If you are unsure which installation a host is running, identify the operating-system option in the provider’s instance details or startup log before editing. Do not keep copies in both directories and assume Palworld will choose the newest one; the server reads the path associated with its platform.

Palworld’s dedicated-server parser expects a very specific shape:
- The first line is exactly
[/Script/Pal.PalGameWorldSettings]. - The second line contains the complete
OptionSettings=(...)expression.
That second line is a single structured value containing comma-separated assignments. It is not a conventional INI file in which each option can safely be placed on its own line. Removing the section header, inserting line breaks inside the expression, or leaving an incomplete closing parenthesis can cause the parser to reject the configuration.
Keep a backup of the last known-good two-line file before making an edit. When changing one option, alter only that assignment and leave the surrounding punctuation untouched. This makes it possible to restore the previous file if the next startup falls back to defaults.
Do not “clean up” the file by reformatting it with an editor that wraps long lines. Automatic line wrapping, smart quotes, or an editor that changes encoding can introduce characters the parser does not expect. A plain-text editor with word wrap disabled is the safest choice.

Find syntax errors before blaming the setting
A malformed OptionSettings string can look like a successful edit because the server still launches. The important clue is that the world behaves as though no custom values were supplied. The documented behavior is fallback to defaults, not reliable partial application.
Commas and separators
Assignments inside OptionSettings=(...) are separated by commas. A missing comma can join two names into one invalid token; an extra comma in the wrong place can do the same. Compare the edited segment with the untouched surrounding text and check every boundary around the value you changed.
Quotation marks
Text values require the quotation style expected by the generated file. Replacing straight quotation marks with typographic “smart” quotes, deleting one side of a pair, or placing a quote inside a value without escaping the structure can invalidate the whole expression. If your editor automatically substitutes punctuation, turn that feature off.
Parentheses
The outer OptionSettings=(...) wrapper must open and close correctly. A missing closing parenthesis is enough to trigger defaults. When editing near the end of the line, count the opening and closing delimiters or compare the final characters with a backup.
Names and value types
Use the exact option key spelling supplied by Palworld’s generated configuration. A near match, altered capitalization, or a key from another version may be ignored or make the line invalid. Values also have types: a numeric field should remain numeric, a Boolean should use the form shown in the generated file, and a text value should retain its quotes. Do not add comments, labels, or explanatory text inside the settings expression.
Make one controlled change at a time
Changing five values at once makes a failure hard to isolate. Start from the known-good file, edit one key, restart, and test. If the change works, create the next edit from that file. If it fails, restore the backup and reapply the single change with its punctuation checked.

A restart is part of applying the setting
Palworld reads the dedicated-server settings at startup. Hosting guidance and current reference material report no live reload for this file. A control-panel save operation does not, by itself, alter the in-memory world configuration.
- Use the host’s stop action or terminate the dedicated-server process.
- Wait until the process is fully stopped rather than immediately issuing start.
- Save the edited file while the process is stopped.
- Start the server again and wait for it to finish loading.
- Join the world and test the changed behavior.
If a provider labels the action “restart,” confirm that it actually performs a stop-and-start cycle. Some panels save a draft, recycle only a wrapper process, or queue a restart for a maintenance window. The server must launch again after the file is saved for the new values to be read.

Keep the old value and the new value in your change log so you know what the server was expected to do.
Check whether your host is regenerating the file
Managed hosts and control panels sometimes generate PalWorldSettings.ini from their own form fields. In that setup, a manual edit can disappear at the next restart, deploy, update, or scheduled synchronization. The result looks identical to an ignored setting even though Palworld read the file you edited briefly.
Signs of automatic generation
- Your change is visible immediately after saving but missing after the next restart.
- The file’s timestamp changes when you press an unrelated panel button.
- The panel displays a separate list of world settings and repopulates the file from those fields.
- A newly generated file returns to a standard template or removes keys you added manually.
Choose one source of truth
If the panel is authoritative, make the change in its Palworld settings form, save it, and use the panel’s explicit apply or restart action. If you need manual control, look for a setting that disables automatic generation, then edit the active file only after generation is disabled. Do not alternate between the panel and the file; the last writer will win.
Before disabling generation, export or copy the current values. A provider may restore its defaults when the feature is turned off, and a backup gives you a way to reconstruct the intended configuration. After the restart, inspect the active file again to confirm that your values survived.

Account for settings that belong to world creation
A valid file and a successful restart do not guarantee that every world rule will change an existing save. Some world settings are read when a world is created. On an established world, the server may continue using state already stored in that save even though the configuration file is correct.
When only one setting appears ineffective, check that setting’s behavior for the Palworld version you are running before taking destructive action. Do not reset or delete a world merely because a value did not change. First make a backup, confirm the active path and syntax, and determine whether the option is documented as creation-time only. If it is, test the setting in a separate new world so you can distinguish a parser problem from an existing-save limitation.
This limitation is different from a file being ignored. Other settings may apply normally after the restart while the creation-time rule remains unchanged in the old save. Treat the two observations separately when diagnosing the server.

When a file appears to revert, compare it before and after the restart rather than relying on memory. A before-and-after copy reveals whether the provider changed the content or whether Palworld simply fell back to defaults while leaving the file untouched.

Back up before every change
Keep the previous active file with a date and a short description of the change. Preserve the exact two-line content, not a reformatted copy. If the server stops accepting the file, restoration is faster than reconstructing a long settings string by hand.
Record the environment
Note whether the instance is Windows or Linux, which provider or panel manages it, and the Palworld server version shown by that service. The official configuration guide’s search result identifies documentation version 1.0.4, while WDC GameGrid’s reference lists a last verification date of October 2, 2026; settings behavior can vary with the server build, so keep the version with your backup.

Separate configuration errors from gameplay expectations
First prove that the server is reading the file by changing a setting whose effect is observable on the current world. Then investigate options that may be creation-time, delayed, or difficult to observe. This prevents a valid configuration from being mistaken for a parser failure.
Verify after provider updates
A host can change its generation behavior or panel labels during an update. After maintenance, check that the active file still contains your values and that the restart action is still a complete stop/start. If the provider documents a new settings workflow, follow that workflow rather than assuming the old manual process remains authoritative.
What to check before choosing a managed Palworld server
If you are selecting or changing hosting, configuration access matters as much as advertised hardware. The documented failure modes suggest five practical comparison questions.

These checks do not require a particular host. They help you determine whether you can identify the active file, control who writes it, and verify persistence after the process starts again.
When to restore defaults and start over
Resetting the file is a recovery step, not the first diagnostic. If the server will not start or repeatedly falls back to defaults, restore the last known-good two-line file or recreate the active file from DefaultPalWorldSettings.ini using the platform’s documented copy procedure. Start the server with that clean configuration, confirm it loads, and then add one intentional change.

Final verification checklist
- The server process was fully stopped before the edit.
- The file is
PalWorldSettings.ini, notDefaultPalWorldSettings.ini. - The directory matches the platform:
WindowsServerfor Windows orLinuxServerfor Linux. - The first line is
[/Script/Pal.PalGameWorldSettings]. - The second line contains one complete
OptionSettings=(...)string. - Commas, quotes, parentheses, key names, and value types match the generated format.
- No editor has wrapped the settings line or replaced straight punctuation.
- The host is not regenerating the file, or the change was made through its authoritative panel.
- A complete stop/start occurred after saving.
- The behavior was tested in-game, with creation-time limitations considered.
If all ten checks pass and the setting still does not behave as expected, the remaining question is usually whether that option is supported by the server version or tied to world creation—not whether Palworld failed to read the file.
