Start by checking the HDMI connection and simplifying the path from console to TV. Then test a different cable or display, update the TV or receiver, and temporarily reduce Xbox video features such as VRR, 120 Hz, 4K, or HDR. These steps help isolate the cause; flickering alone does not identify a failed component.
Check the HDMI input and connection first
- Confirm the TV is set to the HDMI input connected to the Xbox Series X.
- Reseat the HDMI cable at both ends. Look for visible damage on the cable and at the console and TV ports.
- Check whether the image is clear and free of artifacts. Microsoft’s Xbox Series X Console Safety & Repair Instructions include checking the HDMI connection, selected display input, and image quality.
Bypass any receiver, soundbar, or HDMI switch
If the console connects through an AV receiver, soundbar, splitter, or switch, temporarily connect it directly to the TV. This removes intermediary devices from the signal path and helps narrow down where the problem occurs. In a passthrough setup, Microsoft recommends a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable for the connections between devices. The Xbox includes an HDMI cable, so replacing it is best treated as a diagnostic step when the existing cable or connection is suspect—not as a guaranteed fix. See Xbox Wire’s “Is Your TV?” guidance.
Compare cables, ports, and displays
- Try a known-good HDMI cable and another supported HDMI input on the TV.
- If possible, connect the Xbox to another display, or test another source device on the same TV input.
- Change one item at a time and note whether the flicker changes. These comparisons can help isolate the TV, cable, input, or console, but no single comparison proves a component is defective.
Update the TV and receiver
Check the TV and AV receiver manufacturer’s instructions for available firmware updates. Xbox Wire recommends keeping both devices current because updates may address compatibility or picture problems. The steps and available updates vary by model.
Temporarily reduce Xbox video features
Xbox Series X|S supports refresh rates up to 120 Hz, Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM), and variable refresh rate (VRR). Advanced features require compatible equipment, and a TV may support HDMI 2.1 features only on particular ports. Check your exact TV model’s manual rather than assuming every HDMI input supports the same formats.

Try the setting that matches the symptom, changing one option at a time. Menu wording can vary with console software; confirm the current labels on your Xbox. Xbox Wire published these reversible tests in its “Is Your TV?” troubleshooting guidance:
- Visual corruption during gameplay: Turn off VRR and check whether the image stabilizes. Xbox Wire says, “If you’re seeing visual corruption while playing games and you’ve tried all previous steps, then turn off variable refresh rate.”
- Possible refresh-rate conflict: Set the refresh rate to 60 Hz. The published path is Settings > General > TV & Display Options > Refresh rate. Xbox Wire says this should avoid the problem for users who prefer VRR over 120 Hz.
- Problems tied to 4K playback or output: Temporarily disable 4K and see whether the issue changes.
- Strange HDR colors: Temporarily disable HDR10 and/or Auto HDR.
After a test, restore the original setting if it made no difference. If a change helps, re-enable features one by one to identify which setting brings the flicker back. These tests can reveal a compatibility trigger; they do not, by themselves, establish that a feature or device is faulty.

When to seek service
If flickering continues with the Xbox connected directly to another display using a known-good cable, inspect the console’s HDMI port for visible damage. Check for available device updates before hardware troubleshooting, as Microsoft advises in its service guidance. If the issue persists, contact Xbox support or a qualified repair provider rather than attempting a repair based only on the symptom.
