Find the first place the picture turns black: your encoder preview, YouTube Live Control Room, or only the public player. That tells you whether to start with the video source and scene, the encoder-to-YouTube signal, or the stream’s public playback. If you use OBS, check its preview before changing bitrate: bitrate cannot fix a video that is already black inside OBS.
1. Locate where the picture first goes black
Follow the same stream through its stages and note what you see at each one. A black OBS preview points to the file, playback, or scene. A good OBS preview but a bad YouTube preview points toward the outgoing stream or YouTube’s reported stream health. If the Live Control Room shows the picture but the public player does not, the fault is later in the chain; check the player and the live session rather than assuming the source file is broken.
- Black in the encoder preview: start with the selected video, playback state, and visible scene sources.
- Visible in OBS but black in Live Control Room: inspect YouTube’s stream-health messages and validate encoder settings.
- Visible in Live Control Room but black only in the public player: compare what each view displays and check the session’s status; the available official guidance does not establish one universal cause for this case.
2. If OBS preview is black, check the source and scene
- Confirm the file. Open the Media Source properties and verify that the intended file is selected and valid. Check that playback has started.
- Check the active scene and source order. Make sure the Media Source is visible in the scene you are streaming and is not covered by another source above it.
- Review Media Source playback controls. OBS provides
Loop,Restart playback when source becomes active,Show nothing when playback ends, andClose file when inactive. Match these controls to your setup: for a continuous loop, enableLoop; if the source should restart when shown, enable the restart option. If playback ends while looping is off,Show nothing when playback endscan leave the source blank. - Account for reload delay. OBS notes that when
Close file when inactiveis enabled, the file may take a short time to reload when the source becomes visible again. Wait for that reload before treating the blank preview as a persistent failure.
These controls and behaviors are documented in the OBS Media Sources guide.
3. If OBS looks right, inspect YouTube’s stream health
Open the live session in YouTube Live Control Room and read the actual stream-health warning. YouTube’s health guidance covers configuration problems involving video, bitrate, frame rate, codecs, keyframe frequency, audio, and a mismatch between primary and backup streams. A black picture alone does not identify which, if any, applies. Use the warning shown for your session rather than guessing at a codec fault or platform outage.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
YouTube’s LiveStream API health-status documentation describes the health indicators and configuration issues YouTube can report.
4. Verify the encoder’s output settings
Compare your encoder output with YouTube’s current recommendations for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you are actually sending. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion; H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; and constant bitrate (CBR). Its bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so use the matching row rather than a generic bitrate copied from another setup.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Video and audio: check that the selected codecs match YouTube’s listed options and your encoder’s output.
- Bitrate: choose the recommendation for the exact output mode; do not assume one number fits every resolution, frame rate, and codec.
Use the current table in YouTube Help, Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. The recommendations are configuration guidance, not proof that a particular setting caused a black screen.
5. Test with representative video and audio
Before relying on a loop, test with video motion and audio similar to what you intend to stream, then watch YouTube’s stream-health messages during the test. A static image or silent test may not exercise the same output as a moving, audio-bearing loop. YouTube’s guidance is direct: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” — YouTube Help, Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

6. Distinguish dropped frames from a black source
Check OBS’s dropped-frame counter and connection indicator. OBS explains that dropped frames indicate an unstable connection to the ingest server or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. If the connection cannot keep up, lowering the bitrate may help. But dropped frames do not show that the local video file is black; if the OBS preview is already black, return to the source and scene checks first.
See the OBS guide to dropped frames and network issues for the distinction.

7. Troubleshooting by symptom
| What you see | First checks |
|---|---|
| OBS preview is black | Selected and valid file; playback started; Media Source visible in the active scene and not covered; loop and end-of-playback controls. |
| OBS preview works; YouTube reports a problem | Read the session’s stream-health message, then check codec, bitrate, frame rate, keyframe interval, audio, and any primary/backup mismatch. |
| OBS reports dropped frames | Investigate connection stability and whether the bitrate is sustainable. Lower bitrate may help a constrained connection, but does not repair a black local preview. |
| Source turns blank after playback ends or reappears late | Check whether looping is enabled, whether OBS is set to show nothing at end, and whether closing an inactive file causes a reload delay. |
8. Copyright and continuous-play considerations
Technical settings do not grant permission to stream the video or its audio. Use only material you have rights to use, and check YouTube’s applicable copyright rules before running a loop. A continuous or prerecorded stream should also offer viewers meaningful original value; merely looping material does not establish that it complies with YouTube policies. The troubleshooting evidence here does not establish a separate YouTube rule specifically for RTMP loops, so check YouTube’s current policies for your content and channel.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a 24/7 prerecorded YouTube loop rather than troubleshooting a local OBS scene, StreamNeo runs the loop from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. Uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start your free day.
