For wireless PC VR streaming, Wi-Fi 6E is a sensible choice if both your headset and router support 6 GHz and that band works well in your room. Wi-Fi 7 adds features such as Multi-Link Operation (MLO) and wider 6 GHz channels, but current guidance does not establish that those features improve PC VR streaming on today’s headsets. Steam Link recommends Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E; it does not require Wi-Fi 7.
If you’re asking “What router do I need for Steam Link VR?” or “Will Wi-Fi 6E work for wireless PC VR?”, focus first on headset compatibility and the quality of the local wireless link—not the Wi-Fi generation printed on a router box.

Wi-Fi 6E vs Wi-Fi 7: what matters for PC VR
| Factor | Wi-Fi 6E | Wi-Fi 7 |
|---|---|---|
| Steam Link recommendation | Steam recommends Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E routers; Wi-Fi 5 on 5 GHz is its stated minimum. | Not listed as a requirement or recommendation on Steam’s cited requirements page. |
| 6 GHz access | Can use 6 GHz when both router and headset support it and the band is available and useful in your region and room. | Can use 6 GHz, with additional Wi-Fi 7 capabilities available only when the router and client hardware support them. |
| Features relevant to the comparison | Can provide access to 6 GHz; effectiveness depends on the local network and compatible devices. | Includes features such as MLO and 320 MHz channels, but those require compatible client hardware and are not established as a PC VR benefit by the cited sources. |
| Established PC VR advantage | No universal improvement is established; the benefit depends on compatibility and local conditions. | No measured advantage over Wi-Fi 6E for current PC VR headsets is established by the cited sources. |
For Steam Link, Steam lists Wi-Fi 5 on a 5 GHz channel as the minimum router standard and recommends Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E. Its page also specifies supported headset models and software versions, which can change, so check the current Steam Link headset requirements before relying on a particular device.
Wi-Fi 7 features are end-to-end: a router cannot give a headset MLO or 320 MHz channel support if the headset’s wireless hardware does not support those features. Microsoft describes the Wi-Fi 7 capabilities and client compatibility requirements in its Windows Wi-Fi support guidance. That page’s general claims about Wi-Fi 7 speeds are not a comparison of PC VR streaming performance.

When 6 GHz is worth considering
Wi-Fi 6E’s main practical attraction here is access to 6 GHz. It may be useful if 5 GHz is congested, but the improvement is not guaranteed: the headset and router must both support 6 GHz, local regulations and hardware determine availability, and the room’s distance and obstacles affect the link. Check the headset’s specifications and your router’s band support rather than assuming compatibility from the Wi-Fi label alone.
For wireless PC VR, judge the connection where you play. A 6 GHz band that is clean near the access point may be a better option than a crowded 5 GHz band, while walls, floors, distance, metal, and nearby electronics can weaken any wireless signal. Steam’s suggested network settings explain these factors and provide setup guidance.

Fix the local network before buying a newer router
Streaming a PC game to a headset depends on the local connection between those devices. Steam’s setup guidance emphasizes the wireless link and recommends keeping the PC and headset on the same network. A faster broadband plan does not, by itself, fix a weak or inconsistent connection inside the home.
- Check app and headset support. Confirm that your headset model and software version appear in Steam Link’s current requirements, and check which Wi-Fi bands the headset supports.
- Use 5 GHz or 6 GHz instead of congested 2.4 GHz when supported. Steam advises choosing 5 GHz over highly congested 2.4 GHz. Use 6 GHz only if both devices support it and it performs well in your play area.
- Improve access-point placement. Put the router or access point near the play area where practical. Distance and obstacles such as walls, floors, and metal can weaken the signal.
- Wire the gaming PC to the router or access point if possible. Steam warns that simultaneous wireless traffic from the PC and headset can interfere and contribute to choppy streaming. A wired PC connection avoids the PC’s wireless transmissions competing with the headset’s traffic.
- Adjust channel width when troubleshooting. Steam suggests trying 40 MHz before 80 MHz on a capable 802.11ac router if the narrower setting works. Wider is not automatically better in a congested environment.
Meta describes Air Link as streaming PC VR content to Quest over a wireless network. Its developer discussion of Air Link Framerate Insurance notes that network transmission spikes can cause frame drops; it is not a Wi-Fi 6E-versus-Wi-Fi 7 benchmark. The practical target is a stable local link, not a particular standard name.

Which upgrade should you choose?
Keep your current router if the stream is stable
If your existing setup meets the app’s requirements and streams smoothly, the cited guidance gives no reason to replace it solely for Wi-Fi 7. Steam’s stated minimum for Steam Link is Wi-Fi 5 on 5 GHz, with Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E recommended.
Consider Wi-Fi 6E if you need a better local link
A Wi-Fi 6E router or a dedicated VR access point may be a reasonable network upgrade if your existing equipment or local wireless conditions are limiting you and your headset supports 6 GHz. Treat it as an option—not a prerequisite or guarantee of smooth streaming. No specific router model has been validated here.

Choose Wi-Fi 7 for a broader compatible-network upgrade, not a promised VR gain
Wi-Fi 7 may make sense when you are upgrading other compatible network devices and want features such as MLO or 320 MHz channels. To use those features, the headset’s client hardware must support them too. The cited sources do not establish that buying Wi-Fi 7 specifically improves current PC VR streaming compared with a well-configured Wi-Fi 6E setup.
