wiavideo.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component called WIA Video. If Windows says that wiavideo.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair Windows first instead of downloading a replacement DLL.
The file belongs to Windows Image Acquisition (WIA), an older imaging subsystem used by some webcam, scanner, capture, and imaging applications. Microsoft documented the IWiaVideo interface for previewing video and capturing still images from video streams. However, Microsoft also states that video support was removed from WIA in Windows Vista and later, with DirectShow recommended for video acquisition instead.
That makes this error unusual on Windows 10 and Windows 11. The immediate cause may be damaged Windows files, but an old application may also be expecting a legacy component that modern Windows no longer supports in the same way.

A genuine copy should normally come from Windows and be located in an appropriate protected Windows system directory. A file named wiavideo.dll in a temporary folder, downloads folder, or user-writable application-data directory should not automatically be trusted.
What the error actually means
You may see messages such as:
- “The program can’t start because wiavideo.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because wiavideo.dll was not found.”
- “There was a problem starting wiavideo.dll.”
- “Error loading wiavideo.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “wiavideo.dll could not be loaded.”
- “wiavideo.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “Cannot register wiavideo.dll.”
“Specified module could not be found” does not always mean that the named file itself is absent. Windows may have found wiavideo.dll but failed to load one of its dependent files. The same message can also result from an architecture mismatch, corruption, invalid registration, or an application that is incompatible with the current Windows version.
The most useful clue is scope:
- If several programs show related errors, suspect Windows component corruption, quarantine, or disk damage.
- If only one old camera, scanner, or capture program fails, suspect that application or its driver.
- If the error began after a cleanup utility, update, driver installation, or malware incident, focus on restoring the system state before that event.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
Start with Windows Update because a pending servicing repair may restore or replace protected Windows components.
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- On Windows 11, select Check for updates. On Windows 10, select Check for updates in the Windows Update panel.
- Install all available quality, cumulative, and driver updates that Windows offers.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not insist on a restart.
- Open the affected program again.
If the program now starts, do not copy a DLL from another computer. Windows has repaired the component through its own servicing system.
If Windows Update fails, reports that files could not be installed, or the error remains, continue with DISM and System File Checker.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the safest general repair for a missing or damaged Windows component. DISM repairs the Windows component store first. SFC then uses that repaired source to replace protected system files.
Run DISM
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control appears.
- Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to reach 100 percent. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Restart Windows when the command completes.
Run System File Checker
After the restart, open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:
sfc /scannow
Press Enter and wait for the scan to finish. Then restart Windows once more and test the affected program.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The result usually falls into one of these categories:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: SFC found no damaged protected files. The application or a dependency is more likely to be responsible.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: Restart and test the program.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: Run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC. If it still fails, continue to the repair-source section below.
- SFC could not start or complete: Restart into Safe Mode and retry, or investigate component-store and disk problems.
If you regularly repeat SFC and DISM without knowing what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can show the condition of the system before you decide whether to apply its repair; the full version performs the repair, but it is optional and does not replace the Microsoft commands for every case.
Fix 3: Use a matching Windows repair source
DISM normally obtains repair files through Windows Update. If Windows Update cannot provide the required source, DISM may report that the source files could not be found.

Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with a valid Windows repair source that matches the installed edition and architecture. Do not point DISM at an arbitrary folder or an unrelated Windows installation.

- Restart again and test the application.
If DISM continues to reject the source, stop trying random paths. A mismatched source can leave the repair incomplete. Use Windows installation media that matches the installed release, edition, and architecture, or proceed to an in-place Windows repair.
Fix 4: Repair or reinstall the affected application
If only one program reports the error, reinstalling Windows globally is usually not the first move. The program may have an incomplete installation, an old private dependency, or a device driver that was installed incorrectly.
Use the original installer whenever possible.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the affected webcam, scanner, capture, imaging, or video application.
- Select the menu beside it.
- Choose Uninstall, or choose Advanced options and select Repair or Reset when those options are available.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the application from its original installation media or the software publisher’s official support channel.
- Test the program before adding extra DLL files.
An old application may still expect WIA Video even though newer Windows versions no longer provide the same WIA video functionality. If the program is obsolete, use a supported replacement or run it in an appropriately isolated legacy Windows environment rather than weakening the current installation.
If the application is 32-bit, reinstall its 32-bit version and its compatible device software. A 64-bit operating system does not make every old 32-bit application compatible.
Fix 5: Reinstall the camera or scanner driver
A WIA-compatible camera or scanner depends on more than wiavideo.dll. Its driver package may install device metadata, services, registration information, and application components. Microsoft’s WIA video-driver documentation refers to installation information such as STI.WIAVideo.Registration; that is part of a proper driver installation, not an instruction to copy and register an arbitrary DLL.
Remove and reinstall the device
- Disconnect the camera or scanner.
- Right-click the Start button and select Device Manager.
- Expand Cameras, Imaging devices, Sound, video and game controllers, or Universal Serial Bus controllers, depending on the hardware.
- Right-click the affected device and select Uninstall device.
- If Windows offers Attempt to remove the driver for this device, select it only when you intend to reinstall the manufacturer’s package.
- Select Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the manufacturer’s current driver that matches Windows and the device.
- Reconnect the hardware and test the application.
If the device is not listed, select View → Show hidden devices in Device Manager. Also check Other devices for an entry with a warning icon. A missing device entry points more strongly to detection, cabling, USB, or driver issues than to a missing Windows DLL.
When driver hunting involves several hardware revisions and architecture choices, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver problems; the full version performs driver installation, but you can also use the manufacturer’s official package directly.
Check Windows optional features without guessing
wiavideo.dll is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, or .NET redistributable. Enabling unrelated Windows features will not normally restore it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsStill, an old application may separately require a Windows feature. To inspect available features:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
optionalfeatures
- Press Enter.
- Review the listed features for one explicitly named by the application’s documentation.
- Enable only a feature that the application actually requires.
- Select OK and restart if prompted.
Do not enable random legacy components as a substitute for repairing Windows. If the application’s installer reports a missing framework or media feature separately, follow that specific requirement. A wiavideo.dll error by itself does not identify Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET as the cause.

Check antivirus quarantine and scan for malware
Windows Defender or another antivirus product may quarantine a genuine file, or malware may have modified a system component.
To inspect Microsoft Defender history:
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open a detection that refers to
wiavideo.dllor a related system file.
Do not immediately choose Restore. Restore a quarantined file only after confirming that the detection is a false positive and that the file is genuinely from Windows. If the detection is uncertain, leave it quarantined, update Defender, and run a Full scan. For a serious or persistent infection, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan.

Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
Architecture errors are common with old applications.
- A 32-bit program uses 32-bit dependencies.
- A 64-bit program requires 64-bit components.
- On 64-bit Windows,
System32conventionally contains 64-bit system files, whileSysWOW64contains 32-bit system files.
Do not copy a 32-bit wiavideo.dll into System32 just because the computer runs 64-bit Windows. Do not copy a 64-bit file into a 32-bit application folder. The correct repair is to install the application and device components that match the program’s architecture.
To check a program’s architecture, consult its installation documentation or publisher. Windows does not always display this clearly in the standard Apps settings.
The message “not designed to run on Windows” can indicate the wrong architecture, corruption, a damaged dependency, or a tampered file. It does not prove that downloading another copy will solve the problem.
Should you run regsvr32?
regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose the appropriate registration entry points. Historical Windows file inventories show that applicable legacy versions of wiavideo.dll may expose registration exports, but that does not make blind registration a normal repair step.
Use registration only when the original application or device installer specifically requires it and you have a genuine matching file. Otherwise, prefer reinstalling the application or driver.
If a vendor provides an explicit registration instruction, use the registration tool that matches the component’s architecture. On 64-bit Windows, a 32-bit application normally requires the 32-bit registration tool and 32-bit registry view. Running regsvr32 against a random downloaded DLL can create registration errors without repairing the application.

Common registration messages include:
DllRegisterServer was not foundThe module was loaded but the entry point was not foundThe specified module could not be found
These often indicate the wrong file, wrong architecture, missing dependency, or an instruction that does not apply to that component.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use System Restore after a recent system change
System Restore is appropriate when the error began immediately after an update, driver installation, cleanup utility, or other system change and DISM/SFC did not resolve it.
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart and complete the restoration.
System Restore can roll back system files, registry settings, drivers, and installed programs while leaving personal files untouched. It does not replace a backup, so save important work before starting.
Use an in-place Windows repair when normal repairs fail
If Windows files remain damaged, SFC cannot repair them, and System Restore is unavailable or ineffective, an in-place repair is the next major step before Reset or a clean installation.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →On supported Windows 11 systems, Microsoft provides this path:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts and keep the computer connected to power.
This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings when the option is available.
If that option is not present, use matching Windows installation media and start the setup from within Windows. Back up important data first, confirm that you select the option to keep personal files and applications, and do not boot directly from the media unless you intend to perform a clean installation.
What not to do
Do not download wiavideo.dll from a random DLL website and copy it into System32, SysWOW64, or the application folder. That can introduce malware, install the wrong architecture, overwrite a newer protected file, or hide the real problem, such as a missing dependency or incompatible application.
Do not treat wiavideo.dll as a modern runtime. Reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET is not a targeted fix unless the application reports a separate error for one of those components.
Do not use a DLL-cleaner utility that claims to repair every missing file. Do not disable antivirus protection to force an unknown DLL into Windows. Do not register a downloaded replacement with regsvr32.

FAQ
Is wiavideo.dll legitimate?
Yes. wiavideo.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component named WIA Video when it is the authentic file supplied by Windows and located in the expected protected system directory. A file with the same name in an unexpected writable folder requires further verification.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIs wiavideo.dll still used on Windows 10 or Windows 11?
Usually only in legacy compatibility situations. Microsoft removed video support from WIA in Windows Vista and later, so modern applications generally use newer camera and video interfaces. An old application may still request the file even when its video workflow is no longer fully compatible.
Will reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET fix it?
Usually no. Those packages are unrelated to the normal Windows WIA component. Install them only when the application reports a separate missing dependency.
Does “specified module could not be found” prove the DLL is missing?
No. Windows may be unable to load a dependency of wiavideo.dll, or the application may be using the wrong architecture. Repair the application and its driver before assuming the named file is the only problem.
Should I copy the file from another computer?
No. Windows versions, architectures, languages, and servicing levels differ. Use DISM and SFC so Windows can restore the matching protected component.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
What if the error appears only in one old program?
Repair or reinstall that program and its camera or scanner driver. If it remains incompatible with current Windows, replace the software or isolate it in an appropriate legacy environment.
Can regsvr32 fix the problem?
Only in a specific legacy installation where the correct component and registration view are required. It is not a universal DLL repair command and should not be used on an untrusted replacement file.
What if SFC cannot repair wiavideo.dll?
Run DISM first, restart, and run SFC again. If repair still fails, use a matching repair source, check disk health, review the CBS log, try Safe Mode, and consider System Restore or an in-place Windows repair.
