The Wii U has an IBM Power-based multi-core CPU, an AMD Radeon-based HD GPU, and outputs video at up to 1080p. Nintendo’s published specifications do not give exact processor models or clock speeds. Storage varies by model: Basic systems have 8 GB of internal flash, while Premium systems have 32 GB, with some capacity reserved for system data.

What are the Wii U’s hardware specifications?

Nintendo describes the Wii U’s processor and graphics hardware in broad terms rather than publishing detailed chip identifiers. The figures below are from Nintendo’s UK specifications page; its listed dimensions and weight are approximate.

Component Nintendo’s published specification What it tells you
CPU “IBM Power-based multi-core microprocessor” Nintendo does not state an exact model or clock rate on this page.
GPU “AMD Radeon-based High Definition GPU” Nintendo does not give a precise GPU model or detailed graphics-core figures.
Dimensions Approximately 1.8 inches high, 10.6 inches deep, and 6.75 inches long Approximate measurements published by Nintendo UK.
Weight Approximately 3.5 pounds (1.6 kg) Approximate figure published by Nintendo UK.
Video output 1080p, 1080i, 720p, 480p, and 480i These are supported output modes, not a promise that every game renders at 1080p.
Audio output Six-channel linear PCM over HDMI; analog audio through AV Multi Out The specification names these output paths and format.

Does the Wii U support 1080p?

Yes. Nintendo lists 1080p as a supported video output mode, alongside 1080i, 720p, 480p, and 480i. That describes what the console can output; it does not establish the native rendering resolution of every individual game. A title may render at a lower resolution and still be output through a supported video mode.

How much storage does each Wii U have?

Nintendo sold two storage configurations. The capacity is total internal flash memory, not necessarily the amount available for games and other user content: Nintendo notes that some space is reserved for system data.

#1 Best Overall
Nintendo Wii Console, White Premium Bundle (Renewed)
  • Controllers are original OEM (not 3rd party)
  • Tested and works well. Nice condition
Configuration Total internal flash memory Practical point
Basic 8 GB Less internal space for downloaded content; available user space is lower because system data uses part of the total.
Premium 32 GB More internal space than Basic, but some of the stated total is still reserved for system data.

Nintendo’s pack details identify the 8 GB Basic and 32 GB Premium capacities. They do not establish a performance difference between the configurations. Nintendo UK Wii U Pack Details.

Can you expand Wii U storage?

Nintendo says external USB storage can increase the console’s capacity. Its specifications also list SD cards up to 2 GB and SDHC cards up to 32 GB, but that does not mean an SD card is interchangeable with USB storage for every storage use. If you need more room for downloadable content, USB storage is Nintendo’s stated expansion path; confirm compatibility for a specific device before buying it.

Nintendo Wii U Console 32GB Basic Set - Black (Renewed)
  • The Wii U GamePad breaks down barriers between you and your entertainment with a 6.2" 16:9 LCD touch screen, motion control system, front-facing camera, microphone, stereo speakers, rumble feature
  • Console works with most games from the original Wii console, as well as the Wii Remote, Wii Remote Plus, Nunchuk controllers, Balance Board and many other Wii accessories, so you can continue to enjoy your favorite Wii features
  • Play using a Wii Remote controller, the Wii U GamePad controller or a Wii U Pro Controller.
  • Four USB 2.0 connector slots are included. The new console is backward compatible with Wii games and Wii accessories.

What ports and network connections does it have?

  • USB: Four USB 2.0 ports—two on the front and two on the rear.
  • Wi-Fi: Wireless IEEE 802.11b/g/n.
  • Wired network: A Wii LAN Adapter can connect through USB. Nintendo describes an adapter path, not a built-in Ethernet port; the adapter was sold separately.
  • Video and audio: HDMI supports the listed digital video modes and six-channel linear PCM audio; AV Multi Out provides analog output.

Which discs, games, and accessories does the Wii U support?

The console reads Wii U and Wii optical discs. Nintendo says it supports nearly all Wii software and accessories, so compatibility should not be taken to mean every Wii title or accessory works. Nintendo GameCube software and accessories are not supported.

Nintendo’s published controller-capacity statement lists support for two Wii U GamePads and up to four Wii Remotes or Wii U Pro Controllers. It also names Wii Remote Plus and other Wii accessories. This is a capacity statement, not a guarantee that every game or setup can use every listed controller at once; support depends on the software and configuration.

How much power does the Wii U use?

Test context Reported power Qualification
Navigation 33.0 W Nintendo Operations Manual test, January 4–7, 2016.
