Wildgate has a distinctive premise, but its promise depends on a crew working together. The available critic review praised its potential for dramatic ship-to-ship encounters while faulting its onboarding, complexity, and uneven matches. A June 2026 report said major development was winding down, although the game would remain playable and receive occasional updates. Whether it suits you depends on how much you enjoy learning a demanding multiplayer game and coordinating with other players.
What kind of game is Wildgate?
Wildgate is a team-based PvPvE shooter from Moonshot Games, published by Dreamhaven. It blends first-person combat with crew-operated ships: players scavenge, fight creatures and rival crews, and manage ship resources in the procedurally generated Reach, which changes between matches. The official Wildgate Steam store page describes two ways to win: carry an artifact through the Wildgate or destroy the other ships and be the last crew standing.

PC Gamer describes matches as five ships with four players per ship. Crews gather resources and upgrades before facing opponents, while ship upkeep affects survival: fuel enables evasive movement, and mining ice helps keep the reactor from overheating. Those tasks make Wildgate more than a conventional shooter; players have to divide attention between fighting, scavenging, and keeping their ship functional.
What do critics think of Wildgate?
The available review is Tyler Colp’s PC Gamer review, published August 8, 2025, which scored the game 60%. Colp’s verdict was: “Wildgate is a fresh combination of a ship battler and an FPS that is a better concept than it is a game.” Read that as one critic’s dated assessment, not a cross-publication consensus: no substantiated critic aggregate or broad set of review scores is established here.

What the review liked
The strongest case for Wildgate is the potential for a match to become a memorable crew story. Colp describes a team growing stronger through scavenging and upgrades, weathering unexpected problems, and eventually prevailing against the odds. The review recounts a coordinated crew preparing for a dogfight, illustrating the kind of teamwork the design can reward. That is the game’s high point, not a guarantee that every match will play out that way.
What the review criticized
Colp’s central concern is that the game asks players to manage many interacting systems before it teaches them clearly. Characters, weapons, upgrades, ship resources, PvE threats, and rival crews all demand attention. The review says important tactical information is poorly communicated, making it harder for newcomers to know what to do or why a plan is failing.
That learning burden can become especially frustrating with an uncoordinated team. According to the review, random crews may get drawn into long, confusing matches or be dismantled by better-organized opponents. Repetitive PvE encounters and disparities in player skill further reduce match-to-match consistency. In practice, the game’s complexity can create the dramatic teamwork it aims for, but it can also leave players feeling overwhelmed or outmatched.

Is Wildgate worth it?
Wildgate is most appealing if you want a multiplayer game built around crew coordination, ship management, and unpredictable encounters rather than a straightforward run-and-gun loop. Its most compelling matches appear to come when teammates communicate, split responsibilities, and turn scavenged advantages into a coordinated fight. If you prefer clear onboarding, reliable solo-queue matches, or a consistently even contest, the criticism in the PC Gamer review is directly relevant.

Steam’s user reviews provide a separate, changeable snapshot rather than another critic score. On October 8, 2026, Steam displayed 79% positive among 3,993 English-language reviews overall and 38% positive among 13 recent English-language reviews. The recent sample is small, and both figures can change; they should not be treated as a stable consensus or combined with the 2025 critic score.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Wildgate still active and getting updates?
As of a PC Gamer report dated June 25, 2026, Wildgate had not found an audience large enough to sustain ongoing development. The report said the July update was intended to be the last major patch for a while, with occasional bug fixes, balance updates, and small events or rewards planned afterward. It also said the game would remain playable and available to buy, while community management and player support would be reduced. Game director Dustin Browder was quoted as saying, “Wildgate is not going away.” This describes the status reported in June 2026; a later announcement could change it.

That support outlook matters when deciding whether to buy a multiplayer game: continued access is not the same as ongoing major development, and reduced support may affect how quickly problems are addressed.
