A Sims 4 install can fail to launch for several different reasons, and the exact error text, your platform and launcher, and the timing of the problem decide which checks apply. Start by recording those details. If Mods or Custom Content are installed, test them first, because Electronic Arts lists failure to boot among the problems Mods can cause. If a clean Mods test changes nothing, move to EA’s reset and download guidance and check your system against the requirements for your operating system and hardware. The supported path described here requires no purchase of any kind.
Record the symptom before changing anything
These details determine which branch of this guide applies. The same symptom can have different causes on different machines, so write them down first.

- The exact error text or code, copied word for word. Phrases such as “unable to start,” “failed to launch game,” and “game data is missing or damaged” are common wording in player discussions, but they describe the symptom rather than confirm a diagnosis.
- Your operating system and version, and whether you play on PC or Mac.
- The launcher you use: the EA app or Steam.
- Whether the launcher opens, and whether the game process appears briefly and then closes.
- Whether the problem began after a game update, after a graphics change, or after you added or changed a Mod or Custom Content file.
- Whether Mods or Custom Content are installed, and where they are stored.
Test your Mods before anything else
Electronic Arts’ guidance on Mods, game updates and error codes, published in its Help center under the title “The Sims 4: Mods, game updates, and error codes,” states: “If you’re having problems with your game, there’s no single way to determine if Mods are the cause.” The same page says Mod-related problems can include failure to boot. Because a Mods test is reversible, run it before you reinstall anything.
Move Game Mods out first
- Close the game and your launcher completely.
- Open your The Sims 4 user folder. On both Windows and Mac it is usually inside Documents › Electronic Arts › The Sims 4, and the Mods folder sits within it.
- Move the Game Mods, the script files that change how the game itself works, out of the Mods folder into a backup folder on your Desktop. Keep them. Do not delete them.
- Launch the game. If it starts, the cause is in what you removed.
- If it still fails, move the Custom Content out as well and launch again. EA’s guidance says Game Mods are more likely to cause problems than Custom Content, which is why they are tested first.
Add them back in batches
- Return one group of Mods to the Mods folder. Keep the groups to a few batches of similar size.
- Launch the game after each batch.
- When a batch brings the failure back, return only half of that batch and launch again. Repeat, halving each time, until a single item remains.
- Before keeping that item, confirm it is a version compatible with your current game update. Mods built for an earlier version can fail after an update, so check the creator’s page for a current release, or remove the item.
What error codes suggest
EA’s Mods guidance lists specific error codes and what they are commonly associated with. Treat them as clues that point toward a category of Mod, not as proof about your installation.

If Mods are not the cause: reset, then reinstall
If the clean Mods test changes nothing, EA’s Sims 4 support hub points to separate articles for backing up and resetting the game, for system requirements, for downloading the base game, and for Mod and error-code help. Use them in this order.
- Back up your saves and user data before any reset. Follow EA’s article “How to back up and reset your game in The Sims 4,” which describes the backup steps.
- Do not delete your whole user folder unless you have a verified backup of it.
- If game files are missing or incomplete, use EA’s article on downloading the base game and reinstall through your launcher.
- Confirm the requirements for your operating system and hardware, using the sections below, before you reinstall.

Intel GPUs and the August 2025 graphics update
EA’s update notes dated 19 August 2025 state that Intel GPU users now default automatically to the DX11 executable, while GPUs that are not from Intel, NVIDIA or AMD continue to use DX9. The same update says EA fixed crashes associated with certain graphics settings. If your failure started around that period on a PC, this is worth noting as context. It does not diagnose a startup failure, and it is not a reason to change launch arguments on your own.

If the EA app or Steam will not open, or never reaches the game, the fault may sit in the launcher rather than in the game files or your Mods. Record what you see, then use EA’s general article “Games that won’t download, install, or load in the EA app” for current steps. This guide does not give cache-clearing menu clicks, because EA’s interface labels change and the wording in that article is the one to follow. For Steam, the EA steps here do not apply; use Steam’s own launcher support.

What this guide cannot tell you
- EA’s materials do not publish a figure for how often Sims 4 fails to start, or how often Mods are responsible. Player reports describe individual cases and do not show how common any cause is.
- Without the error text, platform, launcher, update timing and Mod status, no specific cause can be named.
- Mod compatibility changes with each game update, and EA’s labels, requirements and any live service issue can change after this article was written. Check the current EA page before relying on a specific figure.
