PlayStation has not promised that AI will never displace jobs in game development. Hermen Hulst, then PlayStation co-CEO, said in a 2024 BBC interview that players would want both AI-driven experiences and handcrafted, thoughtful content. Sony’s more detailed 2026 statements describe AI as a way to speed up selected production and platform tasks, including facial animation based on performance-capture data—not as a blanket replacement for developers or performers.
What did the PlayStation CEO say about AI in game development?
In a BBC interview reported by Push Square on December 3, 2024, Hermen Hulst said he expected demand for both AI-driven innovation and handcrafted games. He said: “I suspect there will be a dual demand in gaming: one for AI-driven innovative experiences and another for handcrafted, thoughtful content.” He added: “Striking the right balance between leveraging AI and preserving the human touch will be crucial.” Push Square’s report is the available source for the remarks; the original BBC page was not independently verified here.
That is a statement about the kinds of experiences Hulst expects players to want, not a guarantee about future staffing. It does not mean PlayStation rejects AI, nor does it establish that AI will not change or eliminate particular jobs.
How is PlayStation using AI to make games?
Sony’s May 2026 corporate strategy presentation describes AI as a way to automate repetitive work and improve productivity in software engineering, quality assurance (QA), 3D modeling and animation. The examples Sony provides are chiefly workflow aids: systems that process or help create assets, rather than evidence that every PlayStation game uses AI-generated content.

Mockingbird: facial animation from performance capture
Sony’s internal tool Mockingbird uses performance-capture data to animate 3D facial models. The company says the workflow can complete animation work that would otherwise take hours “in a fraction of a second.” That is Sony’s own description, not an independently published benchmark. Sony explicitly says the tool processes live captures rather than replacing the human performers who supplied them.
Sony names Naughty Dog and San Diego Studio as adopters, and identifies Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered as a released title in which the tool was used. These examples establish selected use, not that Mockingbird is used across all studios or games.

AI-assisted hair modeling
Sony also describes a workflow that uses videos of real hairstyles to generate 3D hair models with hundreds of strands. The stated aim is to cut manual modeling time so teams can put more effort into other work, such as richer worlds and gameplay. The presentation does not quantify the time saved.
Other production and platform uses
Sony’s 2026 Game & Network Services Q&A discusses uses beyond making visible game assets. It describes AI-assisted transaction reliability and fraud prevention, synthetic voices as early placeholders, and reducing repetitive tasks to support faster iteration. It also points to AI-enhanced characters and worlds as an area for more immersive experiences. These are company descriptions of current or exploratory applications; they do not establish that synthetic voices or generative AI appear in every released game.

Does Sony use generative AI in PlayStation games?
Sony’s examples span different kinds of AI-related work, so “AI in games” does not necessarily mean a system generating dialogue, art or story for players. Mockingbird processes performance-capture data to animate faces; the hair workflow creates 3D models from video; fraud prevention operates at the platform level. Sony’s Q&A describes synthetic voices as placeholders and AI-enhanced characters and worlds as an area of exploration, but does not identify a specific released game using those features.
The distinction matters: a production tool can affect how a game is made without becoming a feature players encounter. The cited materials do not provide a complete inventory of Sony’s AI tools or specify which individual titles use each application, beyond the named Mockingbird example.

AI-driven games and handcrafted games: what is the difference?
Hulst’s 2024 comments describe two potential player experiences, while Sony’s 2026 examples mostly concern workflows and platform operations. AI can be used behind the scenes without defining the experience a player gets.
| Approach | What it means for the player | Human role and examples in Sony’s statements |
|---|---|---|
| AI-driven experience | AI is part of the experience itself, such as characters or worlds that respond in new ways. Hulst referred to this category broadly; Sony’s 2026 Q&A discusses AI-enhanced characters and worlds as an area for immersive experiences. | Human choices still shape the design, but the cited statements do not specify a particular game, implementation or degree of player-facing AI. |
| Handcrafted, thoughtful content | The emphasis is on authored creative work and a deliberate player experience, rather than AI-driven novelty as the defining feature. | Hulst presented this as a kind of game players would continue to want. His remarks do not define a technical test for what counts as handcrafted. |
| AI as a workflow aid | Players may not directly encounter the tool; it assists production or platform operations. | Sony cites performance-capture animation, hair modeling, repetitive-task automation, QA, software engineering and fraud prevention. Its Mockingbird example processes human performances rather than replacing the performers. |
Does this mean AI will not replace game developers?
No company statement cited here can settle the future employment impact of AI. Sony says its tools are intended to reduce repetitive work and help creators iterate, and its presentation specifically says Mockingbird is not replacing human performers in the live-capture workflow. Those statements describe the purpose and scope of selected uses; they are not a promise that no roles will change or be displaced.

The cited materials provide no independent workforce study, employment forecast or quantified job-replacement estimate. The most supportable conclusion is narrower: Sony publicly describes AI as an aid for particular tasks and says human performance remains part of at least one highlighted workflow, while the broader effect on game-industry jobs remains unestablished.
