Yes. Fortnite Ranked ranks reset on a recurring basis, and a player’s visible rank can drop back as a result. Epic’s 2026 competitive update adds an important qualification: when ranks reset, your Skill Rating is kept, so matchmaking still reflects your skill level. A reset changes the rank you see, not the skill information the system uses to pair you with opponents.
Do Fortnite ranks reset?
Yes. Epic’s official Ranked guide ties your rank to the reset cycle. It states: “Upon reaching Unreal, you’ll stay in Unreal until the next rank reset.” That sentence only makes sense if Unreal, and the other ranks below it, are not permanent. Reaching a rank keeps it only until the next reset (Epic Games, Guide to Fortnite Ranked Play Mode, checked October 8, 2026).
What carries over: Skill Rating
Epic’s May 29, 2026 update on FNCS scheduling and competitive changes is the most current official statement on this point. It says: “Starting this Season, when Ranks reset you’ll retain your Skill Rating, and you’ll be matched up with players at a similar skill level” (Epic Games, FNCS Schedule and Competitive Updates, May 29, 2026).
In practical terms, a reset resets the rank badge. It does not wipe out the skill estimate that matchmaking uses. Players who expect a clean slate in the matchmaking sense should expect a different outcome: you start the new cycle at the visible rank the reset assigns, but your Skill Rating continues to inform who you play against.

How rank progress is calculated
Epic describes rank progress as the result of several factors that the system weighs together rather than a single win-or-loss count. According to the official guide, these include:
- Placement in the match.
- Eliminations.
- The skill of the opponents you face.
- Damage dealt compared with damage taken.
- How far into the Storm circles you progress.
Epic says these factors are weighed dynamically and that late-game performance counts for more. The guide does not publish the weights or a formula, so a player cannot calculate exact rank gain or loss from these inputs.

Which modes this applies to
The official guide covers four Ranked experiences: Ranked Battle Royale, Ranked Zero Build, Ranked Reload, and Ranked Reload Zero Build. The reset language in the guide and the 2026 update is written for Ranked as a whole. Neither source states a separate reset schedule for each mode, so do not assume that Zero Build or Reload follows a different timetable from Battle Royale unless an announcement for that mode says so.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Ranked Battle Royale: the mode the 2024 explainer described; reset rules are covered in the historical section below.
- Ranked Zero Build: covered by the official guide; no mode-specific reset date is stated.
- Ranked Reload: covered by the official guide; no mode-specific reset date is stated.
- Ranked Reload Zero Build: covered by the official guide; no mode-specific reset date is stated.
What the 2024 rules said
Epic’s November 1, 2024 competitive explainer, “Competitive Details: Make Your Mark in Chapter 2 Remix!”, said that at the end of a Battle Royale season, ranks reset for all players and placement matches had to be completed again (Epic Games, Competitive Details: Make Your Mark in Chapter 2 Remix!, November 1, 2024).
That was the rule for that period. It is useful for understanding how resets have worked in the past, but it does not describe every current mode, and it predates the 2026 statement that Skill Rating is retained. If your question is about current behavior, the 2026 update and the current guide take precedence.

When is the next reset?
Epic’s official Ranked guide and its 2026 competitive update confirm that resets happen, but neither announces the date of the next one. Do not treat the end of a season as a confirmed reset date. A season can end without a rank reset being announced for that same point, and any date you see in third-party posts should be checked against Epic’s own announcements before you rely on it.
To find current timing:
- Check the Ranked display in the game, which shows your current rank and any reset-related information Epic has added.
- Watch Epic’s Fortnite Competitive news and the FNCS schedule page for dated announcements.
- Read the official Ranked guide linked above for the current rules, and look for a mode-specific note if you play Zero Build, Reload, or Reload Zero Build.
Practical takeaways
- Your visible rank can reset, so an unchanged rank should not be assumed across cycles.
- Your Skill Rating carries over through resets under Epic’s 2026 rule, which means matchmaking is still based on your skill level.
- Rank gain and loss depend on several match factors that Epic does not fully quantify.
- Exact reset dates are announced by Epic, not inferred from the calendar.
In short: ranks reset, Skill Rating survives the reset, and the next reset date is something to confirm in Epic’s official announcements rather than assume.
