Nintendo has not announced a 4DS or a new 3DS-style handheld. Its announced hardware successor is Nintendo Switch 2—not a 3DS successor. Nintendo has said it is exploring ways to make past DS and 3DS games playable on current hardware, but that is a software-access discussion, not confirmation of a new console. Whether Nintendo will ever make a 4DS remains unknown.
Has Nintendo announced a 4DS?
No announcement, release date, design, price, or feature set for a 4DS appears in the official material cited here. Nintendo’s broad comments about researching new ways to play do not identify a particular product. That means there is no substantiated basis to treat a 4DS as confirmed or to give it a launch window.

In 2024, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa said of the then-unannounced Switch successor, “At this stage, we cannot say anything more about the successor to Nintendo Switch.” That comment concerned the next Switch, not a 4DS. Nintendo subsequently announced Switch 2 as “the successor to Nintendo Switch.”
What is Nintendo’s position on the next hardware?
Nintendo announced Switch 2 in January 2025 as the successor to Switch. Its 2025 annual report records a launch date of June 5, 2025. Neither source describes Switch 2 as the successor to Nintendo 3DS.

Nintendo’s annual report also says the company explores technologies that may create new ways to play. This is a general description of research and development, not evidence that Nintendo is building or planning a specific 4DS product.
Does Nintendo’s DS and 3DS software comment mean a new handheld is coming?
No. In a 2026 shareholder Q&A response reproduced by Nintendo Life, Nintendo said, “At this time, there is nothing specific we can share about Nintendo DS or Nintendo 3DS software.” The response discussed exploring ways to make past games playable on current hardware while considering technical challenges and other factors.
That statement is about software access. It does not promise that any particular DS or 3DS game will come to Switch 2, and it does not announce a new handheld. DS and 3DS games used two-screen layouts and, for some games, other hardware features; support for a particular title on a current console would need to be confirmed on a game-by-game basis.
What can you use to play 3DS games now?
If you want to play the original 3DS library today, existing 3DS hardware is the practical option described by the available evidence—not a substitute for a confirmed 4DS. Condition and availability vary for used systems. Check the exact model and condition before buying, and do not assume a current Nintendo console can play every 3DS game or reproduce its two-screen features.

The 3DS remains usable offline, but its online services have important limits:
- eShop purchases: Purchases on the Nintendo 3DS eShop ended March 27, 2023. Nintendo says previously purchased games and downloadable content, along with software updates, can still be redownloaded for the foreseeable future.
- Online play: Online play and other functions that use online communication ended April 8, 2024.
- Local and offline functions: Offline play remains available. StreetPass uses local communication and remains available, while SpotPass functions that rely on online communication do not.
These service changes are separate: the eShop purchase cutoff was in 2023, while the end of online play and other online communication functions took effect in 2024.

What would count as reliable evidence of a 4DS?
Look for a product announcement or other specific statement from Nintendo that identifies new hardware. A general research statement, a discussion of bringing old games to current systems, a fan concept, or an unverified rumor is not the same thing. Until Nintendo provides product-specific details, claims about a 4DS’s release date, price, design, or capabilities are speculation.
