Yes. Rockstar currently lists Grand Theft Auto VI for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Its latest announcement gives November 19, 2026 as the release date. The current official platform list does not include PS4 or Xbox One, and Rockstar has not published comparative performance specifications for the two Xbox models.

GTA 6 console compatibility at a glance

Platform Current status What the official information establishes
PlayStation 5 Confirmed Listed by Rockstar for pre-order and release.
Xbox Series X Confirmed Included in Rockstar’s Xbox Series X|S platform designation.
Xbox Series S Confirmed Included in the same Xbox Series X|S designation; separate frame-rate or resolution details have not been published.
PlayStation 4 Not listed The current platform FAQ does not announce a PS4 version.
Xbox One Not listed The current platform FAQ does not announce an Xbox One version.
PC Not listed in the cited announcement No PC version is identified in Rockstar’s current platform statement used here.
Nintendo Switch Not listed in the cited announcement No Switch version is identified in Rockstar’s current platform statement used here.

“Not listed” is more precise than saying a version can never happen. It describes what Rockstar has officially announced at the time of the current support information, rather than making a permanent prediction about future platforms.

What Rockstar has officially announced

Rockstar’s Customer Support FAQ, updated August 18, 2026, answers the platform question with: “You can pre-order Grand Theft Auto VI for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.” Read the wording in the official platform, editions and versions FAQ.

The latest Newswire announcement, “Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look”, published August 6, 2026, uses the same platform family and states: “Grand Theft Auto VI is coming November 19 to PlayStation 5 and XBOX Series X|S.” Together, these are the clearest current statements about console compatibility.

The platform list confirms where Rockstar is selling and planning to release the game. It does not, by itself, provide technical specifications such as resolution targets, frame-rate modes, ray-tracing settings, install size or required storage. Those details should not be inferred from the console names.

PS5 compatibility: what owners can expect

Every announced PS5 version belongs to the supported platform

If you own a PlayStation 5, your console is one of the two platforms Rockstar currently names for GTA 6. The announcement does not divide PS5 support into separate performance tiers or publish different requirements for the standard PS5 and PS5 Digital Edition. Until Rockstar provides those details, the safe conclusion is simply that GTA 6 is announced for the PS5 platform.

Buying through the correct account and store

A digital purchase is tied to the PlayStation account and store region used for the transaction. For a boxed purchase, Rockstar says the box contains a download code rather than a game disc. Redeem that code through the PlayStation account intended to play the game, and check the code’s regional restrictions before buying.

Xbox Series X|S compatibility explained

“Series X|S” means the current Xbox console family

Rockstar’s wording intentionally names Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S together. That means both models are within the announced Xbox platform family. The company’s FAQ and Newswire post do not provide a separate comparison of Series X and Series S graphics, resolution, frame rate, loading behavior or visual settings.

Do not assume identical performance

Support for both consoles establishes compatibility, not performance parity. Series X and Series S have different hardware capabilities, but Rockstar has not stated which modes or targets GTA 6 will use on each model in the cited announcements. Avoid treating one console as confirmed to run at a particular frame rate or resolution until an official technical specification is published.

Digital and boxed purchases

Xbox buyers should select an Xbox version when ordering and redeem the code through the Microsoft account that will be used to play. A code purchased for the wrong platform or region may not activate on the intended account.

Why PS4 and Xbox One are not confirmed

Neither PS4 nor Xbox One appears in Rockstar’s current GTA 6 platform answer. That means there is no official confirmation in the cited material that the game runs natively on either older console. It is therefore inaccurate to promise an Xbox One or PS4 edition based on the existence of earlier Grand Theft Auto releases on those systems.

Backward compatibility is a separate announcement

Rockstar’s November 2020 article, “Backward Compatibility on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S”, explains how selected older Rockstar games can be played on newer hardware. It discusses compatible legacy titles, not GTA 6. It does not announce GTA 6 for PS4 or Xbox One, and it does not turn the new game into a last-generation title.

That older compatibility guidance also has hardware-specific limits. Disc-based compatible games can be inserted into a PS5 or Xbox Series X, while the PS5 Digital Edition and Xbox Series S do not accept discs. Digital owners can access compatible titles associated with their accounts. Those rules apply to the older games covered by the 2020 announcement, not to a GTA 6 disc release.

The current release date, and how it changed

Rockstar’s latest cited announcement gives November 19, 2026 as the announced release date for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Because release schedules can change, treat it as the current announced date rather than a guarantee that cannot be revised.

Editions and what comes in the box

Rockstar’s platform and editions FAQ names two versions. The Standard Edition includes the game. The Ultimate Edition includes the game and the Ultimate Edition Upgrade.

Standard Edition Grand Theft Auto VI Owners can purchase the Ultimate Edition Upgrade through the PlayStation or Microsoft store after redeeming the Standard Edition code.

The physical version is a boxed download code

Do not expect a disc in the retail box. Rockstar explicitly says the physical version contains a download code and that a disc will not be included. The code is redeemed for the digital download, and Rockstar says this format is available to support pre-loading.

This matters when checking a listing: confirm the platform printed on the box, make sure the retailer is selling the correct edition, and plan for an internet download. A “physical” purchase does not mean the game can be installed from optical media.

Region restrictions can affect activation

Rockstar says code-redemption restrictions vary by region and recommends buying and playing from a retailer in the country associated with your platform account. A code bought in another market may not activate as expected. Check the store’s country, the account region and the product description before completing a cross-region purchase.

How to buy and prepare for GTA 6 on a supported console

  1. Confirm your hardware. Make sure you are buying for PS5, Xbox Series X or Xbox Series S. Do not select a PS4 or Xbox One listing on the assumption that backward compatibility makes it a GTA 6 version.
  2. Choose the edition. Select Standard if you only need the game, or Ultimate if you want the Ultimate Edition Upgrade included. The upgrade can also be bought later by Standard owners through the relevant console store.
  3. Use the correct storefront. Rockstar’s pre-order details page, updated June 26, 2026, lists PlayStation Store, Xbox Store, Rockstar Store and selected retailers as purchase channels, with availability depending on country.
  4. Match the account region. For a boxed code, buy from a retailer serving the country tied to your PlayStation Network or Microsoft account whenever possible.
  5. Redeem the code on the intended account. Once redeemed, the download entitlement is associated with that platform account. Double-check the platform and edition before confirming redemption.
  6. Allow time for the download. Since the physical package is a download code, free storage and a reliable internet connection will be needed even though the purchase arrives in a box.

Should you choose PS5, Series X or Series S?

The available official information does not establish a best-performing console. Choose based on practical ownership factors rather than an unverified frame-rate or resolution claim.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Already own a PS5: The PlayStation version is announced for your console, so buying another system is unnecessary for compatibility.
  • Already own an Xbox Series X or Series S: Both are included in Rockstar’s Xbox Series X|S designation. Use the Xbox storefront and account you normally use.
  • Own both platforms: Compare the accounts where you keep purchases, the region in which you will redeem the code and which console you prefer for your existing games. Rockstar has not published a supported-platform performance comparison in the cited material.
  • Own only a PS4 or Xbox One: The current announcement does not identify either older console as supported. You would need an announced supported platform to play GTA 6.
  • Shopping for a console solely for GTA 6: Verify the latest release and platform information before purchasing hardware, because the announced date is subject to change.

What is still unknown from the current announcements

The platform confirmation answers the compatibility question but leaves several technical questions open. Rockstar’s cited FAQ and Newswire announcement do not state:

  • Separate resolution or frame-rate targets for PS5, Series X and Series S.
  • Whether the consoles will offer multiple graphics modes.
  • The game’s install size or minimum free-storage requirement.
  • A PC, PS4, Xbox One or Nintendo Switch release.
  • Whether future platform announcements will expand the current list.

Those omissions are not evidence that a feature or version is impossible; they simply mean it is not established by the current official platform statements. Use Rockstar’s support pages and Newswire for later changes.

Common compatibility mistakes to avoid

Buying an old-generation listing

A listing that mentions PS4 or Xbox One may refer to another Grand Theft Auto game, an older product page or an incorrect retailer entry. Match the product title and platform to Rockstar’s current PS5 and Xbox Series X|S announcement.

Assuming a box contains a disc

The physical GTA 6 package is a download-code box. You need to redeem the code and download the game; there is no disc to insert.

Assuming Series X and Series S have identical settings

Both consoles are announced as supported, but Rockstar has not published a model-by-model performance breakdown. Do not buy or recommend one on the basis of an unofficial frame-rate promise.

Ignoring the purchase region

Cross-region codes can have activation restrictions. Use a retailer in the country associated with your platform account, as Rockstar recommends, or confirm compatibility with the seller before purchase.
