In current Java and Bedrock 1.21 gameplay, a raid requires Bad Omen, entry into a village, conversion to Raid Omen, and the end of a 30-second countdown. Defeating a raid captain can provide the item that gives you Bad Omen, but the attack or kill itself is not the trigger.
What actually starts a raid in Minecraft 1.21?
The modern system separates obtaining an omen from activating a raid. Combat with an illager is only relevant if it helps you obtain an Ominous Bottle. The raid begins only after the following sequence is completed:

- Consume the bottle. Drinking it gives your player the Bad Omen effect.
- Enter a village. When a player with Bad Omen enters a recognized village, the effect changes to Raid Omen.
- Let Raid Omen expire. Java Edition 1.21 and Bedrock Edition 1.21 give you 30 seconds. When that effect expires, the raid starts at the location where you gained Raid Omen.
Mojang’s Java 1.21 release notes explicitly say that Bad Omen no longer triggers a raid directly when entering a village. The Bedrock 1.21 notes describe the same transition. That change is why older explanations that say “kill a captain, then walk into a village and instantly start a raid” are misleading for current versions.
Ordinary pillager versus raid captain
Every pillager is an illager, but not every pillager has the captain role. The distinction matters because only the captain is connected to the Ominous Bottle drop described in the current mechanic.

| Situation | What it does | Does it start a raid by itself? |
|---|---|---|
| Attack an ordinary pillager | Starts combat and may make the mob retaliate | No |
| Defeat an ordinary pillager | Removes that mob; it does not grant the raid-triggering sequence | No |
| Attack a raid captain | Starts combat with the captain | No |
| Defeat a raid captain outside a raid | Can provide an Ominous Bottle | No |
| Consume an Ominous Bottle | Gives the player Bad Omen | No, not until the village sequence is completed |
| Enter a village while carrying Bad Omen | Converts Bad Omen into Raid Omen and starts the countdown | Not immediately |
| Allow Raid Omen to expire | Creates the raid at the relevant location | Yes |
Therefore, “Does killing a pillager captain start a raid?” has the same short answer: no. The captain can supply the bottle, while consuming the bottle and completing the village countdown are separate actions.
How the Bad Omen to Raid Omen sequence works
1. The captain is a source of the bottle, not the trigger
The current Ominous Bottle system means the player deliberately consumes an item to acquire Bad Omen. A captain defeated outside a raid can drop that bottle. You can fight a captain without immediately committing to a raid; the critical choice happens when the bottle is consumed and when you later enter a village.
2. Village entry changes the effect
Bad Omen remains separate from Raid Omen until a player carrying it enters a village. At that point, the game changes the effect to Raid Omen rather than spawning the raid immediately. This gives you a short opportunity to cancel the process.
3. The 30-second window decides the outcome
In both Java and Bedrock 1.21, Raid Omen lasts 30 seconds. If the effect reaches the end of that period, the raid begins at the location where the player gained Raid Omen. The timer is the practical boundary: cancel the effect before it expires if you do not want the encounter.
What counts as a village for this purpose?
The official 1.21 release notes establish the effect transition and timer but do not provide a complete checklist of every village-detection edge case. A Minecraft Wiki raid tutorial describes a practical village as a chunk containing at least one villager and one claimed bed. Treat that as a working guide rather than a universal guarantee for every edition, version, or unusual build.
If you are testing a deliberately constructed area, verify that a villager is present and that a bed has been claimed. A settlement that looks like a village to a player may not satisfy the game’s detection rules, while a compact trading or breeder setup may qualify even without houses, paths, or other visual features.
Edition and version should be recorded when troubleshooting. Java 1.21 and Bedrock 1.21 share the key Bad Omen, Raid Omen, and 30-second behavior, but small detection details can change in later releases.

How to stop a raid before it starts
Milk is the documented way to clear Raid Omen during the countdown. Keep a milk bucket available if you are carrying Bad Omen near a settlement and want the option to cancel.
- Notice that Bad Omen has changed to Raid Omen after you enter the village.
- Drink milk before the 30-second Raid Omen duration expires.
- Confirm that the Raid Omen effect has been removed.
- Leave the area or continue playing; with the effect cleared in time, the raid does not start from that trigger.
The official Java and Bedrock 1.21 notes identify milk as clearing Raid Omen and preventing the raid. The timing matters: the documented prevention applies while the omen is counting down, not as a promise that an already active raid will disappear.
Common situations and what they mean
You hit a pillager near your base, and nothing happens
That is the expected result when you have no Bad Omen. Ordinary combat does not begin the village countdown, so killing the mob does not create a raid.

You killed a captain and later saw Bad Omen
The relevant event was obtaining and consuming an Ominous Bottle, not striking the captain. If you do not want a raid, do not consume the bottle, or clear the effect before entering a village.
You entered a village and saw Raid Omen
The game has recognized the combination of your Bad Omen and that village. You have a 30-second window in the 1.21 rules. Drink milk before the effect expires if you want to prevent the raid.
A raid began even though you did not attack anything
Attacking is not required. You may already have had Bad Omen from a previously consumed bottle, then crossed into a recognized village and waited out Raid Omen. Check your recent effects and inventory history rather than focusing only on the last pillager you saw.
You expected a raid, but one did not appear
Possible explanations include consuming no Ominous Bottle, never entering a recognized village, drinking milk during the countdown, or using a version whose mechanics differ from 1.21. Check the edition and exact version first, then verify the practical villager-and-claimed-bed conditions.

A quick diagnostic checklist
When the result seems surprising, check the events in order instead of assuming the last attack caused it:
- Did you defeat a captain outside a raid, or only an ordinary pillager?
- Did an Ominous Bottle actually enter your inventory?
- Did you consume that bottle, giving yourself Bad Omen?
- Did you cross into a location that the game recognizes as a village?
- Did Bad Omen change to Raid Omen on entry?
- Did the full 30-second countdown finish, or did you drink milk first?
This sequence also explains why two players can fight the same patrol and get different outcomes. One may never obtain or consume a bottle, while the other may already have Bad Omen and trigger the village conversion later without fighting anything at that moment.
Java and Bedrock: what is the same?
For the question of whether attacking a pillager starts a raid, Java Edition 1.21 and Bedrock Edition 1.21 reach the same conclusion. Both document these points:
- Bad Omen no longer starts a raid directly when the player enters a village.
- Village entry changes Bad Omen into Raid Omen.
- Raid Omen lasts 30 seconds.
- A raid starts when the effect expires.
- Milk can clear Raid Omen and prevent that raid from starting.
Do not silently apply this 1.21 description to every Minecraft release. The update changed the older captain-linked flow, so guides written for pre-1.21 gameplay may describe a different trigger. When asking for help, include both “Java” or “Bedrock” and the numbered version shown by the launcher or title screen.
A safe way to handle pillagers without starting a raid
If your goal is simply to clear a patrol or protect a base, you can attack ordinary pillagers normally. Combat alone does not create the omen sequence. Exercise extra care around a captain: defeating one may give you an Ominous Bottle, but you still control whether to consume it and whether to approach a village afterward.
- Keep the bottle unconsumed if you are not prepared for a raid.
- Carry milk when transporting or fighting near a settlement.
- Watch the effect display after entering any area that may qualify as a village.
- Use the 30-second countdown to decide, rather than assuming the raid has already begun.
Why older answers can be confusing
Many raid explanations were written before the 1.21 update. They often group “defeat a patrol captain,” “get Bad Omen,” and “enter a village” into one immediate trigger. That description reflects the older behavior more closely than the current system. In 1.21, Mojang deliberately inserted the Raid Omen stage and its 30-second duration, making the process reversible with milk before the timer ends.
The safest wording is therefore version-specific: in Java and Bedrock 1.21, attacking an ordinary pillager does not start a raid, and even defeating a captain does not start one immediately. The raid requires the Bad Omen-to-Raid Omen sequence and the expiration of the countdown.

The practical decision: fight, retreat, or cancel?
If an ordinary pillager is threatening you, fighting it is safe from a raid-trigger standpoint. If the mob is a captain, decide whether you want the possible Ominous Bottle before picking it up or consuming it. Once Bad Omen is active, you can still travel through non-village areas without starting the village countdown; the critical transition occurs when you enter a recognized village. If Raid Omen appears, stop and use the 30-second window deliberately. Milk is the explicit cancellation method, so it is more reliable than simply running away after the countdown has already begun.
Frequently asked questions
Does hitting a pillager near villagers start a raid?
No. Attacking an ordinary pillager does not start a raid, even if the fight happens near a settlement. The required sequence is Bad Omen, village entry, Raid Omen, and expiration of the 30-second effect.
Does killing a pillager captain instantly start a raid?
No. In the 1.21 system, a captain defeated outside a raid can provide an Ominous Bottle. The raid does not begin until the bottle is consumed, Bad Omen is carried into a village, and Raid Omen expires.
Can I prevent the raid after entering the village?
Yes. Drink milk while Raid Omen is still active. The Java and Bedrock 1.21 notes say milk clears the effect and prevents the raid from starting.

Why did a raid start when I never attacked a pillager?
You may have consumed an Ominous Bottle earlier, then entered a recognized village and waited through Raid Omen. Fighting is not required once Bad Omen is already active.
Do older Minecraft versions follow this exact process?
Not necessarily. Version 1.21 changed the older captain-linked flow by adding Raid Omen and its countdown. Always identify the edition and version when comparing guides or troubleshooting.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does attacking a pillager near villagers start a raid?
No. Ordinary combat is not the trigger. A raid requires Bad Omen, village entry, Raid Omen, and the 30-second expiration in 1.21.
Does killing a pillager captain instantly start a raid?
No. A captain defeated outside a raid can provide an Ominous Bottle, but the raid requires consuming it and completing the village countdown.
How can I stop a raid before it begins?
Drink milk while Raid Omen is active. Milk clears the effect and prevents the raid if used before the 30-second timer expires.
Does this work the same on Java and Bedrock?
Java 1.21 and Bedrock 1.21 document the same key transition: Bad Omen becomes Raid Omen in a village, lasts 30 seconds, and starts the raid when it expires.
Why did a raid start when I did not attack anything?
You may have consumed an Ominous Bottle earlier, entered a recognized village, and allowed Raid Omen to expire. Attacking a pillager is not required.

The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Hitting or killing an ordinary pillager does not start a raid. In Minecraft Java and Bedrock 1.21, the trigger is the complete Bad Omen → village entry → Raid Omen → 30-second expiration sequence. A captain can supply an Ominous Bottle, but milk can clear Raid Omen before the raid begins.
