Usually not. Deleting Fortnite from a PS5 removes the installed game files from the console. Epic Games says Fortnite progress and items are saved to your Epic Games account, not to the console, so a clean reinstall should not erase them. The real risk is not the reinstall itself but the account connection: if your PlayStation account is linked to the wrong Epic account, or was unlinked, the game will show different progress or none at all.
What deleting Fortnite actually removes
Deleting and reinstalling are software actions. They replace the game files on the console. They do not change the Epic Games account behind the game. Epic’s support guidance states that Fortnite progress and items are stored on the Epic account, so the question to answer is which account your console can reach, not whether the download still exists.

Two actions are easy to confuse, and they affect different things:

|---|---|---|
| Deleting and reinstalling the Fortnite game | Locally installed game files on the PS5 | Progress, items and purchases on the Epic Games account, according to Epic’s guidance |
| Unlinking a console from an Epic account | The console’s access to that account’s progress and purchases | The account data itself, which remains on the Epic account but may no longer be reachable from that console |
Epic’s wording on unlinking is specific: once a console account is unlinked, that console can no longer access the progress and purchases on that Epic account. The data is still there. Your access from that console is what changes.

Check the account link before you delete anything
Do this first, because it is the only step that can change what you see after reinstalling. Epic recommends checking which Epic Games account is linked to the PlayStation account you use on the PS5, and confirming that it is the account where your Fortnite progress actually appears.
- On the PS5, confirm which PlayStation Network account is signed in as the primary account you play with.
- Sign in to the Epic Games account you believe holds your progress, and check that the Fortnite account shows the expected level, cosmetics and V-Bucks balance. Note the Epic display name.
- Confirm that the PlayStation account is linked to that same Epic account. If you are unsure, do not change any link yet.
- Only then proceed to delete and reinstall.
How to delete and reinstall Fortnite on PS5
- From the Game Library, highlight the Fortnite tile, press the Options button on your controller, and choose Delete. Confirm the deletion.
- Open the PlayStation Store, search for Fortnite, and download it again. Fortnite is listed as a free download. Online play is required, and in-game purchases are optional.
- Sign in with the same PlayStation account you used before, then launch the game.
- Check that the Epic account used in the game matches the one you confirmed above, and that your progress appears.
PlayStation’s troubleshooting guidance itself treats deleting and redownloading a game as a remedy for some launch problems. Deleting the game is therefore a normal recovery step, not an unusual one.

When deleting is the recommended fix
Epic’s support pages include a PlayStation error stating that the data is corrupted and asking players to delete the game from the console and redownload it. In this case, deletion and reinstallation is the intended remedy, and the progress question is still governed by the Epic account link.
What if your progress looks missing after reinstalling?
Do not assume the progress was erased. Epic’s account guidance identifies two common explanations: the console is linked to a different Epic account, or the PlayStation account was unlinked. Work through these in order:

- Elevate PC gaming with advanced features like haptic feedback and adaptive triggers in a range of blockbuster PC titles.
- Wrong Epic account. Check the display name in the game against the account you expect. If the console is linked to another Epic account, that account’s progress will appear instead.
- Unlinked console. If the link was removed, the console cannot reach the Epic account’s progress and purchases until it is linked again to the right account.
- Different PlayStation account. Fortnite progress is tied to the Epic account linked to the PlayStation account you sign in with. Signing in as a different PlayStation user can show a different profile.
- Still missing. Contact Epic Games Support with your Epic account details. Do not unlink or relink the account repeatedly while troubleshooting, since each change alters which progress the console can reach.
Where PlayStation cloud saves fit
PlayStation Plus cloud storage is a separate feature for saved game data. PlayStation says PS5 game saves can sync with cloud storage when auto-sync is enabled, and it also provides manual upload and download controls. That feature is useful for many games, but you do not need it to keep Fortnite progress. Epic’s guidance places Fortnite progress and items on the Epic account, so the account link is the factor that matters.
Epic’s guidance does not describe any Fortnite-specific progress data kept only on the console. If you want an extra safeguard for other games on the same console, cloud storage is worth checking separately.

The short version
Deleting and reinstalling Fortnite on PS5 removes game files, not your Epic account. Confirm the linked Epic account before you start, sign in with the same PlayStation account afterward, and treat any missing progress as an account-link question first. Epic’s support guidance may change as its account and linking pages are updated, so check the current support articles if your steps differ from the ones above.
