Usually, no. In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, moving the Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 clock back does not erase progress you have already saved. It changes the date your island is experiencing. The important exception is turnips: backward time travel spoils them, so sell yours before changing the clock.
What happens to saved progress when you go back?
Changing the console date is not the same as loading an earlier save. It makes the island run on the date and time set on the console; it does not roll your island back to an earlier point. A specialist New Horizons time-travel FAQ reports that completed progress and acquired items are retained when traveling backwards.

Nintendo confirms that New Horizons follows the real-time date and time on the console, and that changing the settings frequently affects the island. That explains why date-dependent events and routines may change, but it does not mean that every activity responds in the same way. Nintendo’s support guidance on missing visitors, events, or activities describes the clock behavior; detailed rollback effects are reported by game references rather than explicitly guaranteed by Nintendo.

Turnips spoil
Turnips are the clearest immediate risk. The Nookipedia turnip reference reports that traveling backwards spoils them, including when you go back within the same week. Turnips also spoil by Sunday at 5 a.m. Sell them before you move the clock backwards.

- Show off your paradise – play on the same system with a total of 4 people, or play together online or over local wireless for fun with up to 8 players
Other reported effects
The specialist FAQ also reports that backward travel can affect turnip prices and your ABD streak. Treat these as reported game mechanics, not proof that every time-based system behaves identically. The sources do not establish a universal outcome for construction, villagers, events, or every repeated clock change.
How to move the clock back safely
- Save and close Animal Crossing: New Horizons normally.
- If you have turnips, sell them before changing the date.
- On the console, open System Settings, then System, then Date and Time. Change the date or time there.
- Reopen the game and check the island. Its date and time will follow the console clock.
Because frequent clock changes affect the island, avoid assuming that a date change is consequence-free for every time-dependent activity.

Is island backup a way to undo time travel?
No. Nintendo describes island backup as a way to recover island data if the console is lost, stolen, or sent for service—not as a routine time-travel undo. Backup must be enabled beforehand, requires an active Nintendo Switch Online membership, and is created periodically while the game is not being played and the console is connected to the internet. See Nintendo’s island save-data backup and restore instructions.
Which Animal Crossing game does this apply to?
This answer is about Animal Crossing: New Horizons, not every game in the series. Nintendo’s Americas support page lists version 3.0.3, released April 29, 2026, and support for Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2; see Nintendo’s update information.
