No. A fully shut-down PC cannot download or install a game because Windows, the launcher, network connection, processor, and storage are no longer running. Sleep and Hibernate usually pause downloads too. To keep a game downloading, leave the PC awake and turn off only the screen.
“Off” can mean several different things
| PC state | Will the download continue? | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Shut down | No | Windows closes and the computer powers off. |
| Hibernate | No | Windows saves the current state to storage, then powers down. |
| Sleep | Usually no | Power use falls sharply and ordinary desktop activity is suspended or restricted. |
| Screen off | Yes | The display turns off while Windows and the launcher continue running. |
| Locked | Yes, if the PC stays awake | Your session is protected, but background applications can continue. |
Windows devices with Modern Standby can perform some background activity, but that does not reliably mean Steam, Epic Games Launcher, or another desktop launcher will continue a large game download. Microsoft describes Modern Standby restrictions on traditional desktop application execution in its Modern Standby documentation.

How to keep a game downloading overnight
On Windows 11:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Go to System > Power & battery.
- Open Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts.
- Set Turn my screen off after to a short period.
- Set Make my device sleep after to Never under When plugged in.
Keep the PC connected to power and the internet. You can lock it with Windows key + L. Do not choose Sleep, Hibernate, or Shut down.

Laptop lid settings matter
Closing a laptop lid often puts the computer to Sleep. To check the behavior, open Control Panel > System and Security > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do, then review When I close the lid for the plugged-in profile. If you choose Do nothing, the laptop can keep downloading with the lid closed—but place it on a hard, ventilated surface, never inside a bag or on bedding.
Can you turn off the monitor?
Yes. Turning off the monitor is different from putting the PC to sleep. You can let Windows switch off the display automatically or press the monitor’s physical power button while leaving the computer awake. This is the most reliable balance between continuing the download and reducing display power use.
What happens if you shut down during a download?
The download stops immediately, but the launcher will often resume after you start Windows again. It may first verify partial files, allocate storage, unpack data, or repair the installation. The displayed percentage may change, and you should not assume the download will always resume at exactly the same point.

A normal shutdown is safer than cutting power or holding down the power button. Forced power loss can leave temporary or partially written files that require additional verification or repair. A Microsoft Q&A answer describes Microsoft Store progress as typically continuing after startup, but this is not a universal guarantee for every launcher, game, or failed installation.
Remember that downloading is not always the final step. A launcher may still need to decompress, patch, allocate, install, or verify files after the network transfer reaches 100%.
Launcher-specific details
Steam
Steam must remain running and connected for an active download. Launching a game can pause downloads; Steam documents this behavior in its download support guidance. Shutting down or sleeping the PC stops the active transfer, after which Steam will normally inspect the incomplete installation and resume or verify it when you return.

Steam Offline Mode is not a way to download games. Steam says games and updates do not receive important updates while offline, and some games require an active connection or another launcher. See Steam’s Offline Mode information.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Epic Games Launcher also needs Windows, the launcher, and the network connection to remain active. If its speed falls to 0 B/s, the download may not have failed: Epic says the launcher can temporarily stop network activity while it writes downloaded data to disk. Check free space and allow disk processing to finish before assuming the download is stuck.
Microsoft Store and Xbox app
The PC still needs to be powered on for a large download or installation to complete. After a shutdown, the download may resume rather than start over, but exact recovery depends on the title and the state of its installation files. Background activity on some Modern Standby devices should not be treated as reliable support for a full game download.

Other launchers
GOG, EA app, Ubisoft Connect, Battle.net, and other launchers can handle interrupted installations differently. The general rule remains the same: keep Windows awake if you want the transfer and installation to continue.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why a download may appear stuck
- Disk writing: The launcher may be processing downloaded data instead of receiving more network data.
- File allocation or verification: Large games can spend considerable time preparing files.
- Insufficient storage: Installation may stop even when the download itself appears active.
- Network interruption: Wi-Fi loss, router problems, or authentication failures can pause the queue.
- Launcher updates: The launcher may restart or recheck its installation manifest.
- Power events: Windows Update, battery protection, thermal shutdown, or a restart can interrupt the process.
What to do after restarting the PC
- Start Windows normally and reopen the same launcher.
- Wait for it to reconnect and complete any verification or file-allocation step.
- Check the download queue and available storage.
- Resume the download if it is paused.
- Use the launcher’s built-in Verify, Repair, or equivalent option if it reports damaged or missing files.
- Do not delete the partial game folder unless the launcher’s support instructions specifically tell you to.
Best setup for a long download
- Keep the PC plugged into AC power.
- Set the plugged-in sleep timeout to Never temporarily.
- Allow the display to turn off.
- Use a stable wired or wireless connection.
- Check that enough storage is available for both the download and installation.
- Keep a laptop on a hard, flat, ventilated surface.
- Restore your normal sleep setting when the download and installation are finished.
Leaving a PC awake uses more electricity and can produce heat. If saving power is more important than finishing immediately, pause the launcher and shut down normally; the download can resume later.

Some storefronts support remote download initiation from an app or web interface. That lets you send a request to a reachable PC; it does not let a completely powered-off PC perform the download. The target computer still needs to be on, connected, and able to run the launcher.
