How Connections works
Each daily puzzle presents 16 words, which players divide into four groups of four based on shared connections. The groups are color-coded by difficulty: yellow is generally easiest and purple trickiest. The New York Times says each puzzle has exactly one solution, although some words may appear to fit multiple categories.
The daily puzzle releases at midnight in the player’s timezone. NYT says it can be played through NYTimes.com and the Games app, and that it is free to play without registration. The official Connections help page also describes the archive and Connections Bot as subscriber features; check that page for current eligibility and access terms.
