Niantic’s current public policy does not name Poké Genie or say that using it is automatically safe or automatically bannable. The policy focuses on what players do: it prohibits conduct that violates its rules, including unauthorized access to Pokémon GO’s game clients or backends through third-party software. Poké Genie says it calculates IVs from screenshots, but that description is not a Niantic ruling or a guarantee against enforcement.
What Niantic’s policy says about third-party apps
Niantic defines cheating as behavior that violates its Terms of Service, Player Guidelines, or Live Event Code of Conduct. Its examples include falsifying a player’s location and accessing game clients or backends without authorization, including through third-party software or add-ons. Niantic’s Gameplay Fairness Policy does not mention Poké Genie by name, so it does not establish that the app is officially approved or officially banned.

Niantic’s help article on violating the Terms of Service also identifies GPS spoofing, emulators, modified or unofficial software, and unauthorized access through third-party software or add-ons as conduct that can prompt action. The relevant distinction is not simply whether an app is separate from Pokémon GO; it is whether its use involves conduct Niantic prohibits. That distinction is explanatory, not a formal safe-harbor test.

Poké Genie’s publisher, Poke Genie Inc., says in its privacy policy: “Poke Genie only uses the screenshots to calculate IV, never for any other purpose.” The same policy says Poké Genie Keyboard requires Full Access to access the latest screenshot, sync scan data between the app and keyboard, use the system clipboard to paste text, and retrieve Pokémon stat updates from the company’s server.
#1 Best Overall
- The packaging is Japanese, but item works the same as the US version.
- Catch Pokémon and track your rest rhythm with the Pokémon GO Plus + accessory!
- Keep track of your sleep with the press of a button
- Press and hold the central button on the Pokémon GO Plus + accessory and place it by your pillow to track your rest rhythm on the Pokémon Sleep app
- There’s a Pikachu within your Pokémon GO Plus + that can sing you lullabies and act as your morning alarm; Pikachu grows friendlier the more you sleep, unlocking even more sounds!
Those are the publisher’s descriptions of its app and permissions, not an independent technical audit and not Niantic’s interpretation of its policy. The sources available do not establish a Poké Genie-specific ban rate or risk percentage.
How to think about the risk
Screenshot-based analysis is different in kind from changing the game client, automating play, falsifying GPS location, or accessing game services without authorization. But that comparison should not be read as proof that every feature or use of Poké Genie is permitted: Niantic’s policy is broad, and it does not publish an app-specific determination here.

What happens if Niantic takes action
Niantic describes a three-strike process, while warning that some misconduct can lead to immediate account termination without prior warning. Its policy describes the following stages:
| Stage | Policy-described consequence |
|---|---|
| First strike | Warning lasting approximately seven days; gameplay may be restricted. |
| Second strike | Suspension lasting approximately 30 days. |
| Third strike | Permanent account termination. |
These are Niantic’s stated policy terms, not a guarantee that every case receives all three steps in sequence. If you see an in-game notice saying your account is suspended or terminated for violating the Terms, Niantic says the account is banned. A different sign-in or loading error may instead be temporary. If you believe a termination was mistaken, Niantic directs players to its web-form appeal process through its Terms of Service help article.

Why an old Niantic statement does not settle the Poké Genie question
In an August 29, 2016 statement, Niantic said add-on maps that scraped its servers still violated its Terms and could result in bans. That statement concerned server-scraping maps and other unauthorized activity; it does not establish that screenshot-based Poké Genie use is equivalent, nor does it amount to a current ruling on Poké Genie.
