Not always. On PC, uninstalling and reinstalling Grand Theft Auto V does not guarantee that every mod file is removed. For a clean install, Rockstar says to uninstall the game, delete leftover files and folders from its installation directory, then reinstall using the instructions for your launcher.
Why a reinstall may leave GTA V mods behind
Mods can be installed in different ways. Some add script files beside the game executable; others change game files. Because these components may remain in the installation folder after an uninstall, downloading the game again is not, by itself, a guaranteed clean slate. Rockstar’s clean-install instructions for GTA V on PC specifically tell players to delete remaining files and folders from the game’s installation directory after uninstalling. Rockstar says a clean install ensures there are no file conflicts or permission problems.
How to do a clean reinstall
- Identify your launcher. Rockstar’s instructions cover the Rockstar Games Launcher (including non-Steam installations), Steam, and Epic Games Store. Follow the steps for the version you own.
- Uninstall GTA V through that launcher.
- Check the installation directory. After uninstalling, remove leftover game files and folders there as directed by Rockstar. This is the key step for removing components that the uninstall may have left behind.
- Reinstall through your launcher. If you are troubleshooting errors that continue afterward, Rockstar’s BattlEye troubleshooting guide also recommends verifying game files.
There is no reliable one-size-fits-all list of mod files to delete: the files depend on how each mod was installed. Avoid treating a list of commonly used script files as complete, particularly if you have used tools that modify game archives.

Keep saves and recordings separate from game files
Game-install files are not the same as personal data. Rockstar identifies DocumentsRockstar GamesGTAV and AppDataLocalRockstar GamesGTAV as locations for saves, settings, and Rockstar Video Editor recordings. Its clean-install guide warns that deleting these folders without a backup can make their contents unrecoverable.
Before removing anything outside the game installation directory, check whether it contains data you want to keep and make a backup. Follow Rockstar’s clean-install guide carefully so you do not confuse leftover game files with saves or recordings.

What this means for GTA Online
Removing mods from the game installation is separate from whether a particular mod is allowed or compatible online. Rockstar’s BattlEye troubleshooting page, last updated February 24, 2026, says ReShade and Special_K will be disabled during GTA Online gameplay when BattlEye is active. That statement applies to those named graphics tools; it does not establish that every mod is safe to use online.
This guidance concerns GTA V on PC, including Rockstar Games Launcher, Steam, and Epic installations. It does not establish what happens when reinstalling GTA games on consoles or in other entries in the series.
