Probably not by much, Australian Energy Minister Chris Bowen said of the newly reported G7 fuel release. He welcomed the move, but said Australia had received only about 2% of its fuel from the United States and did not quantify any effect on Australian petrol prices. The G7 action may add supply to global markets; it is not a guarantee of cheaper fuel at Australian bowsers.
What the G7 has agreed to release
The G7 leaders agreed to release 100 million barrels of crude oil and diesel over four months through the International Energy Agency, according to AAP’s report. The IEA’s account of the leaders’ 2 October 2026 meeting confirms that they discussed severe pressure on diesel supplies, considered available options and asked the agency to continue its work. It does not independently confirm the specific 100-million-barrel figure or four-month schedule.
This reported October action is separate from the IEA’s earlier collective response. On 11 March 2026, IEA member countries agreed to make 400 million barrels of emergency oil stocks available. By 2 October, around 325 million barrels of that March action had been released, the IEA said.
Why Bowen expects a limited direct effect on Australia
Bowen welcomed the G7 move, particularly the United States’ confirmation that it did not intend to restrict diesel supply. He told reporters: “I do welcome the actions of G7, particularly the confirmation by the United States that they are not intending to put any restrictions on diesel supply,” according to AAP.

He said about 2% of Australia’s fuel came from the United States, and warned that export restrictions would disrupt international fuel movements: “Australia hasn’t been getting much diesel or fuel from the United States, about two per cent but … any restrictions on exports are a blow to international fuel movements.” Bowen also said that more fuel flowing was better for everyone. Taken together, his comments welcome additional global supply without promising a large direct benefit for Australia.
Will Australian petrol prices fall?
There is no quantified forecast in Bowen’s remarks. When asked whether the release would ease prices at Australian bowsers, he declined to estimate the effect. The release could support global availability, but the information available does not establish whether, when or by how much Australian pump prices might change.

AAP reported early-October national capital-city averages of A$2.38 per litre for unleaded 91 and A$2.85 per litre for diesel, attributing them to Petrol Pulse. Those are dated price snapshots, not evidence that the G7 action caused a change or a prediction of future prices.
Australia’s reported fuel position
In figures Bowen provided to AAP and reported on 3 October 2026, Australia had 41 days of petrol, 32 days of diesel and 28 days of jet fuel on hand. He also cited 50 supply ships headed to Australian ports and 3.6 billion litres contracted for delivery in the next four weeks. These figures describe the position reported at that time; they are not a guarantee against delays or supply disruption.

AAP also reported Bowen’s description of a 20% reduction in Australia’s minimum stock obligation requirements. That domestic obligation should not be confused with the IEA’s separate commitment for member countries to hold emergency stocks equivalent to at least 90 days of net imports. The IEA explains that this is an international member-country commitment with flexible implementation; it does not, by itself, specify Australia’s domestic minimum stock requirement. See the IEA’s membership overview.

The clearest conclusion is about uncertainty, not a price prediction: Bowen said the G7 release might not materially affect Australia’s position, while welcoming steps that keep fuel moving internationally. The reported stock, shipping and contract figures offer context for Australia’s supply position on 3 October, but neither those figures nor the G7 announcement establishes what motorists will pay next.
