Will The Sims 5 be free to play? EA says Project Rene will be free to download when it is ready, with no subscription or upfront core-game purchase. But EA’s January 2026 update says Project Rene is a separate social, collaborative, mobile-first experience—not the successor to The Sims 4. The free-download statement applies to Project Rene, not to a confirmed numbered Sims sequel.
What does “free” mean for Project Rene?
EA’s Project Rene announcement says that when the experience is ready and fully open to players, they will be able to “join, play and explore it without a subscription, core game purchase or energy mechanics.” In other words, EA has said players will not need to pay upfront to download and play its core experience.

Will Project Rene have paid content?
Yes. EA says it plans to sell content and packs, alongside regular updates to the core game. Its examples are illustrative rather than a finalized catalogue: basic weather could be added to the core game free for everyone, while a winter-sports-themed pack could be a purchase. EA has not announced prices or confirmed which specific content will be paid.

Is Project Rene actually The Sims 5?
EA’s January 9, 2026 update describes Project Rene as a separate experience focused on social, collaborative play, with a mobile-first approach. EA explicitly says it is not the successor to The Sims 4. The same update says single-player PC and console experiences remain part of the franchise’s future, but does not give a release schedule for them.
So, while “The Sims 5” is a common shorthand for a hoped-for next mainline game, EA’s free-to-download commitment is specifically about Project Rene. The current official positioning does not establish that a future single-player Sims game will share that pricing model.

How this differs from The Sims 4 being free
EA announced that The Sims 4 base game would be free for new players beginning October 18, 2022, on the listed PC, Mac, PlayStation and Xbox platforms. That is a separate policy for an existing game; it does not establish Project Rene’s launch details or the prices of its planned paid content. EA says The Sims 4 will continue to receive content and updates.
