As of October 7, 2026, Naughty Dog has not announced The Last of Us Part III. Studio head Neil Druckmann has confirmed two very early-stage projects that will expand the franchise’s canon beyond Parts I and II, but he has not said either is a numbered sequel—or even that either is a game. A third game remains possible, not confirmed.
What Naughty Dog has confirmed
In a September 28, 2026 post on Naughty Dog’s official site, Druckmann said the studio has “a couple of very exciting new projects in very early stages” that “will expand the canon of The Last of Us beyond Part I and Part II.” He did not identify the projects, describe their format, or provide release timing.
Druckmann also said the studio would not return to the world without something meaningful to say, adding: “We believe these stories are worth telling.” That confirms plans for more canon-expanding stories, not a specific game called The Last of Us Part III.
What Druckmann said about a third game
Naughty Dog considered it, then chose another project
In a September 2025 interview with Variety, Druckmann said the studio had debated whether to move directly to The Last of Us 3 after Part II and spent a long time weighing ideas. Naughty Dog chose to pursue its science-fiction project, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, instead. Druckmann described the studio’s best work as coming when its team is passionate about a project, and said it does not plan too far into the future. His comments left open what the studio might do after its current work.

His earlier comments described uncertainty, not a permanent no
In a March 2025 interview with CTV’s Etalk, Druckmann said another game or project could not be guaranteed because “so many stars have to align.” He cited work on the television season and Naughty Dog’s new game as his immediate focus. The later 2026 announcement confirms early-stage franchise projects, but still does not identify one as Part III.
In February 2025 comments reported by GameSpot, Druckmann explained that while making a game he does not plan multiple future installments or save a good idea for a hypothetical sequel. That describes his creative process; it is not a prediction about whether a third game will happen.

- Format: The official post does not say whether the projects are games, television, or another format.
- Title and story: Neither has been named or described.
- Release timing: No window or date has been announced, and the projects are at a very early stage.
The fact that there are two projects does not establish that one is a sequel, nor does it indicate how soon either might arrive.

It is possible, but unconfirmed. Naughty Dog has openly considered a third game in the past and now says it is developing two early-stage projects that expand the franchise canon. Until the studio identifies one as The Last of Us Part III, says it is a game, and announces it as such, claims that Part III is officially coming go beyond what has been confirmed.
