Some titles have a free update or paid upgrade that adds content or improves performance; others may have partial functionality issues or may not be supported. Check the current status of the specific game before buying it for Switch 2 or counting on it from your existing library.
Will your original Switch games work on Switch 2?
Nintendo Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games. Nintendo cautions that some titles are unsupported or not fully compatible because the new console’s hardware differs from the original Switch. The answer is therefore title-specific, not a blanket yes or no.

Nintendo’s Switch 2 compatibility page is the place to check a game’s status. Nintendo advises checking before buying a Switch game to play on Switch 2, as well as before relying on an existing game in your library. For third-party games, Nintendo recommends contacting the publisher for specific information.
What a compatibility result can mean
- Playable: The game works on Switch 2. This alone does not mean it has been enhanced.
- Partial functionality issue or limitation: The game may run, but Nintendo warns that some titles can have issues or take longer to become fully playable. Check the specific notice for the game.
- Not supported: The game is not currently playable on Switch 2.
- Enhanced: Some games offer a free update or paid upgrade that adds content or improves performance. The changes depend on the title; compatibility by itself is not evidence of an enhancement.
Nintendo says future testing and updates may change which titles are supported. Treat compatibility information as current-status guidance, not a permanent guarantee.

Which games have Switch 2 enhancements?
In an announcement dated May 29, 2025, Nintendo named 12 games scheduled to receive free Switch 2 enhancements on June 5, 2025. Nintendo said the content of the enhancements differs by game.
- Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet
- The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom
- Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury
- Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics
- ARMS
- Super Mario Odyssey
- Big Brain Academy: Brain vs. Brain
- The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening
- Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker
- Game Builder Garage
- New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe
These are examples from Nintendo’s announcement, not a promise that every game on the list has the same improvements or that a particular update remains available in the same form. Check the game’s current Nintendo listing for its compatibility and update details. Nintendo describes the broader distinction this way: “Some Nintendo Switch games also offer free updates or paid upgrades that bring additional content or improved performance when the game is played on Nintendo Switch 2.”

How to check a game before buying or upgrading
- Look up the exact game on Nintendo’s current Switch 2 compatibility page.
- Read the game-specific status and any notes about partial functionality, updates, or upgrades; do not assume that a playable result means better performance.
- For a third-party game, check with its publisher if Nintendo’s listing does not answer your question.
- If an enhancement matters to your decision, verify whether it is a free update or paid upgrade and what it changes for that particular game.
Nintendo’s UK guidance notes that future testing and updates may increase the number of supported titles, while some games may take longer to become playable, have partial functionality issues, or remain unsupported. A status can change, so confirm it close to the time you plan to purchase or play.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is not established about performance?
A game running on Switch 2 does not, on its own, establish a frame-rate, resolution, or loading-time improvement. Nintendo’s general guidance supports enhancements only where a game has a relevant free update or paid upgrade, and the effect varies by title. The announcement does not provide a single performance result that applies to all Switch games.
