The answer depends on which edition you play. The Minecraft Wiki’s boat entry states that mobs riding a boat do not despawn in Java Edition. That exception is labeled Java-only. In Bedrock Edition, a boat alone should not be treated as protection, because Bedrock mobs remain subject to distance and simulation-distance despawn rules. If you need a specific zombie to stay put in Bedrock, give it a name tag.
Java Edition: the boat exception
The Minecraft Wiki entry for boats says that mobs riding a boat don’t despawn, and it marks the statement as Java Edition only. This is a secondary reference. The sources available for this article did not include an official Java release note or developer document that confirms the exception, so treat it as the commonly documented behavior rather than a formally cited rule. If a zombie is seated in a boat in Java, the boat is the mechanism that keeps it from despawning, and this is the only edition where that claim is documented.

Bedrock Edition: distance rules still apply
Mojang’s Bedrock 1.16.0 release notes, published in 2020, changed Bedrock despawning to work more like Java. Those notes are the most authoritative description available for how distance governs despawning, but they describe the rules as of that version. Later updates may have adjusted them, so check the current patch notes before relying on exact numbers in a live world.
Simulation distance 4
At simulation distance 4, almost all naturally spawning mobs despawn automatically once they are 44 blocks or farther from the nearest player. A zombie seated in a boat gets no exemption under this rule.

Higher simulation distances
At higher simulation distances, mobs can despawn at the edge of simulation distance, up to 128 blocks from the nearest player. The release notes describe this as the upper limit of the despawn range, not a guaranteed despawn point for every mob.
The 32 to 44 block intermediate range
Between 32 and 44 blocks from the nearest player, a mob must avoid taking damage for 30 seconds and then pass a 1-in-800 chance to despawn. The chance is checked on each attempt, so a zombie in this band can survive for a long time before it despawns. The same notes list this as a rule for the intermediate range, not a fixed timer.

Creator documentation for configurable entities
Mojang’s Bedrock Samples documentation for the generic minecraft:despawn component lists default values of a 32-block minimum range for attempting standard despawning and a 128-block maximum range for instant despawning. This documentation covers configurable entities. It does not describe the exact behavior of every built-in zombie in every release, so it should not be read as a complete list of zombie despawn behavior.

The 1.16.0 release notes state: “Any mobs that have been set to persist (tempted, name-tagged, tamed, bred, etc.) will never naturally despawn.” This is the most direct official statement available about keeping a specific mob, and it covers name-tagged mobs explicitly. To name-tag a zombie in Bedrock:

- Obtain a name tag. You can craft one at an anvil by combining paper with a little iron, or find one in the world.
- Open an anvil, place the name tag in the item slot, type the mob’s name in the rename field, and take the renamed tag.
- Hold the renamed tag and right-click the zombie. The mob’s nameplate should appear above it.
A name tag provides persistence, but it does not contain the mob. If the zombie can still walk into a space that exposes it to daylight or other hazards, you will still need an enclosure to keep it safe.
Comparing the two options
| Option | Java Edition | Bedrock Edition |
|---|---|---|
| Zombie seated in a boat | Documented on the Minecraft Wiki as preventing despawning (secondary source; no official Java note located) | Not established as protection; distance rules still apply |
| Name-tagged zombie | Not stated in the sources reviewed for this article | Never naturally despawns, per Mojang’s 1.16.0 release notes (2020) |
| Boat as containment | Keeps the mob in place within the boat | Keeps the mob in place, but does not prevent despawning |
What to do in practice
- Confirm your edition before you build anything around the boat.
- In Java, a zombie in a boat is the documented exception, but verify against current official notes if the setup matters for a long-term build.
- In Bedrock, name-tag any zombie you want to keep and place it inside a sealed enclosure.
- Stay within the simulation distance you use, and keep in mind that mobs farther than 44 blocks may despawn at simulation distance 4.
What the sources do not establish
The available sources do not include an official Java release note confirming the boat exception. They also do not provide a version-by-version comparison of despawn rules, and they do not document chunk-loading or multiplayer edge cases. The distances and probabilities above are game-rule values set by the 1.16.0 notes and creator documentation, not measured statistics. Test any setup in your own world before relying on it.
