“Win32_Tpm.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
win32_tpm.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component used by the TPM WMI provider. The safest repair is to restore Windows components with DISM and SFC, not to download a replacement DLL.
What win32_tpm.dll does
Microsoft documents win32_tpm.dll as the provider behind the Win32_Tpm WMI class. Windows uses this class for TPM management operations such as checking TPM status, ownership, self-tests, clearing, and other security-management tasks.

The provider is associated with the WMI namespace:
rootCIMV2SecurityMicrosoftTpm
Its companion MOF file is:
Win32_tpm.mof
On a typical Windows installation, the DLL is located at:
%SystemRoot%System32wbemWin32_Tpm.dll
That normally means:
C:WindowsSystem32wbemWin32_Tpm.dll
The exact file, version, and architecture depend on the Windows release, servicing level, and whether the installation is 32-bit or 64-bit. Microsoft’s documentation identifies this as a Windows TPM WMI provider, not a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, .NET, or ordinary application DLL. See Microsoft’s Win32_Tpm documentation.
A DLL error involving this file does not automatically mean the physical TPM is defective. The file may be missing, damaged, quarantined, incorrectly registered with WMI, or inaccessible because Windows itself has servicing or disk problems.
First, check what is actually broken
Before changing TPM settings or reinstalling software, determine whether the Windows copy exists and whether WMI can still load the provider.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCheck the file path and signature
- Press Windows key, type PowerShell.
- Right-click Windows PowerShell and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
$path = "$env:windirSystem32wbemWin32_Tpm.dll"
Test-Path $path
Get-Item $path | Select-Object FullName,Length,VersionInfo
Get-AuthenticodeSignature $path
If Test-Path returns True, the file exists in the expected Windows directory. The file details should show a Windows-system location, and the signature should identify Microsoft as the signer with a valid status.
If the file is absent, do not copy a similarly named file from another computer. Different Windows builds and architectures can require different binaries.
Test the Win32_Tpm WMI class
In the same elevated PowerShell window, run:
Get-CimClass -Namespace "root/cimv2/security/microsofttpm" -ClassName Win32_Tpm
If the command returns class information, the WMI class is registered and accessible. If it reports that the class or namespace cannot be found, the file may exist while its WMI registration is damaged.
This command checks WMI registration. It does not prove that your computer has a physical TPM, that the TPM is enabled in firmware, or that BitLocker is configured.
Fix 1: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
This is the primary repair for a missing, damaged, or deleted Windows copy of win32_tpm.dll.

Install updates and restart first
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install all offered updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
On Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, then select Check for updates.
After restarting, open Command Prompt as administrator:
- Press Windows key.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
Run this command and wait for it to finish:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as a source. When it completes, run:
sfc /scannow
Do not close the window until SFC reaches 100 percent. Then restart Windows and try the action that produced the error.
A successful repair may report that corrupted files were found and repaired. Check the original program or Windows function again. If the error remains, repeat the path and WMI checks above. If DISM or SFC reports that it could not complete the repair, continue to the Windows Update and repair-installation sections below rather than copying a DLL manually.
When repeatedly running SFC and DISM leaves you unsure which Windows component is failing, Outbyte PC Repair can show what its free scan finds; repairs are performed by the full version, but Windows servicing remains the definitive fix for this Microsoft component.
Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may quarantine a genuine system file after a false detection, or malware may have modified or removed it.

Check Windows Security Protection history
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Privacy & security.
- Choose Windows Security.
- Open Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
On Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history.
Look for an entry involving Win32_Tpm.dll or the wbem directory. Microsoft distinguishes between quarantined threats, restored files, and files allowed on the device.
Restore or allow the file only if all of the following are true:

- TPM 2.0 module for Asus motherboard.
- TPM 2.0 module chip 2.0mm pitch, 2x7P, 14 pin security module
- LPC 14 Pin for AsusTPM chip is better compatible with DDR4 memory module of motherboard, built in support memory type higher than DDR3! Supported states may vary by motherboard specification.
- Note: Don't support laptops and motherboards prior to X99; Don't support DDR3 memory.
- Packing list:1x TPM 2.0 Module for ASUS
- The path is the normal Windows path under
System32wbem. - The file has a valid Microsoft signature.
- Your security product identifies the detection as a false positive.
- A current scan does not indicate broader malware activity.
If those checks do not confirm authenticity, leave the file quarantined and run DISM followed by SFC. Then run a full Microsoft Defender scan. If malware is suspected, use Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options > Microsoft Defender Antivirus offline scan. Save open work first because the computer will restart.

Fix 3: Investigate Windows Update or servicing failure
If the problem began after an interrupted update, cleanup utility, or system rollback, Windows may have an incomplete component installation.
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install everything offered.
- Restart.
- Run the DISM and SFC commands from Fix 1 again.
On Windows 10, use Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
Older installations need a separate qualification. Microsoft published a TPM 2.0 update for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 that includes x64 and x86 Win32_tpm.dll files. That update applies only to the hardware and operating-system scenario described by Microsoft. It is not a general DLL download for Windows 10 or Windows 11. Review the Microsoft TPM 2.0 update before considering it.
Do not choose a file because its version or size looks similar. Microsoft’s update information shows separate x86 and x64 builds, and those update-specific values are not universal replacement targets.
Fix 4: Check the TPM separately from the DLL
A disabled or missing TPM is a different problem from a missing Windows provider.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
tpm.msc
- Press Enter.
If the TPM management console says that a compatible TPM cannot be found, check the computer manufacturer’s firmware documentation. The TPM may be disabled in UEFI firmware, unavailable on that hardware, or affected by an OEM firmware issue.
You can also inspect Device Manager:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Security devices.
- Look for Trusted Platform Module.
- Right-click the device and select Properties.
- Read the Device status message under the General tab.
Updating the TPM, chipset, or firmware driver may help a device-detection problem, but it will not replace a protected Windows DLL. Do not clear the TPM as a general DLL repair. Clearing it can affect BitLocker keys and other security features. Make sure recovery keys and security credentials are available before changing TPM state.

- Note: Don't support laptops and motherboards prior to X99; Don't support DDR3 memory.
- Packing list:1x TPM 2.0 Module for ASROCK
If identifying the correct OEM driver is the difficult part, Outbyte Driver Updater can show which driver updates its free scan detects; driver installation is handled by the full version, and you should still prefer the computer manufacturer’s official firmware and driver packages.
Fix 5: Repair WMI registration only after servicing repairs
Use this branch only when:
Win32_Tpm.dllexists in the expected directory.- The
Win32_TpmWMI class cannot be queried. - DISM and SFC have completed without resolving the problem.
- The matching MOF file also exists.
Check for the MOF file:
%SystemRoot%System32wbemWin32_tpm.mof
If it exists, open Command Prompt as administrator and run:
mofcomp "%windir%System32wbemWin32_tpm.mof"
Restart Windows and test the WMI command again:
Get-CimClass -Namespace "root/cimv2/security/microsofttpm" -ClassName Win32_Tpm
A successful result means WMI can load the class. If mofcomp reports errors, stop there and record the exact message. The MOF must match the installed Windows build. Compiling a MOF changes the WMI repository, so this is not a routine command to run against every DLL.
Microsoft explains the distinction between COM provider registration and MOF-based WMI registration in its provider-registration guidance and mofcomp documentation.

Do not routinely run:
regsvr32 Win32_Tpm.dll
regsvr32 is not a universal DLL repair command. This provider uses Windows and WMI registration mechanisms, including its MOF registration. Blindly registering a system provider can produce another error without restoring the WMI class.
Do not download a loose DLL
There is no official standalone Microsoft win32_tpm.dll redistributable download.
Random DLL websites can provide malware, an incorrect Windows build, or the wrong architecture. Copying a 32-bit file into a 64-bit Windows directory, or copying a file from a different release, can leave the original problem unresolved and create additional system-file conflicts.
Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, System Restore, or Windows installation media instead. If an application has a private copy of a similarly named file, repair that application only through its developer’s official installer. A game launcher’s Verify or Repair option can fix a damaged game installation, but it cannot reliably repair the Windows copy under System32wbem.

Fix 6: Use System Restore or an in-place repair
If the problem began after software removal, a cleanup operation, a driver change, or an update, System Restore may return system files and registry settings to an earlier working state.
Best Value
- Independent TPM Processor: The remote card encryption security module uses an independent TPM encryption processor, which is a daughter board connected to the main board.
- High Security: The TPM securely stores an encryption key that can be created using encryption software, without which the content on the user's PC remains encrypted and protected from unauthorized access.
- PC Architecture: TPM module system components adopts a standard PC architecture and reserves a certain amount of memory for the system, so the actual memory size will be smaller than the specified amount.
- Scope of Application: TPM modules are suitable for GIGABYTE for 11 motherboards. Some motherboards require a TPM module inserted or an update to the latest BIOS to enable the TPM option.
- Easy to Use: 12Pin remote card encryption security module is easy to use, no complicated procedures are required, and it can be used immediately after installation.
- Press Windows key.
- Type Create a restore point.
- Open it.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Review the affected programs and updates.
- Select Finish and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore preserves personal files, but it can revert system files, drivers, installed programs, updates, and registry settings. Microsoft describes the process in its System Restore guidance.
If System Restore is unavailable or does not help, use Windows installation media for an in-place repair. Back up important data first, start the installation from within Windows, and choose Keep personal files and apps when that option is offered. Follow Microsoft’s reinstall Windows with installation media instructions.
FAQ
Is win32_tpm.dll legitimate?
Yes. It is Microsoft’s Windows TPM WMI provider DLL for the Win32_Tpm class. Confirm the location and Microsoft signature if you need to validate a particular copy.
Is it part of Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
No. Those runtime packages are not the identity of this file. Repair Windows components instead.
Does the error mean my TPM is broken?
Not necessarily. A missing or corrupt provider file, damaged WMI registration, antivirus quarantine, or Windows servicing problem can produce the error even when the TPM hardware is healthy.
Should I clear or enable the TPM?
Do not clear it to fix a DLL error. Clearing TPM data can affect BitLocker and other security functions. Firmware settings and hardware checks belong to a separate TPM-detection diagnosis.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat if the file exists but one application still fails?
Test the WMI class, then repair or reinstall the affected application through its official installer. If the file and WMI class work for other users but not one profile, per-user startup software or profile corruption becomes more likely.
What should I give a technician if nothing works?
Record the exact error, Windows edition and architecture, whether the file exists, the signature result, the output of Get-CimClass, DISM and SFC results, antivirus Protection history, and any recent update or cleanup event. Do not delete TPM data or replace system DLLs before handing over that information.
