The Windows Vista and Windows 7 sidebar platform was deprecated and removed after Microsoft identified security risks. You cannot switch it back on through a normal Windows 10 setting or add Windows 7 gadgets as if they were a supported component.
You can still get glanceable information, but the choice is between a supported dashboard on Windows 11 and third-party software that recreates free-floating gadgets. The latter can work, yet every gadget should be treated as downloaded desktop code rather than as a harmless clock or meter.

The short answer for Windows 10 users
Windows 10 does not include Microsoft’s original Desktop Gadgets platform. The feature belonged to the Vista/7 generation, where a Sidebar hosted small, always-visible items such as clocks, calendars, weather panels and CPU meters. Microsoft deprecated that platform and removed it rather than carrying it forward into Windows 10.
That means three common assumptions are wrong:
- There is no built-in Windows 10 switch that restores the old Sidebar.
- A Windows 7 gadget file is not automatically compatible with Windows 10 just because both systems are from Microsoft.
- Installing an unofficial gadget host is not the same as enabling a Microsoft feature; it introduces software and code from another publisher.
If your priority is supported, glanceable information, Windows 11 Widgets are the modern Microsoft option. If your priority is the old free-floating desktop layout, a third-party host such as GadgetPack is the type of software you would need, with considerably more attention to source and gadget trust.

What happened to Windows desktop gadgets?
They were a Vista and Windows 7 platform
Classic gadgets were locally installed mini-applications that appeared in the Windows Sidebar or directly on the desktop. The model was deliberately lightweight from the user’s perspective: install a small package, place it on the desktop, and leave it visible while other applications were open. That model supported system monitors, clocks, calendars, weather and other quick-view tools.
It was not simply a collection of pictures or web bookmarks. Microsoft’s legacy security documentation describes Sidebar gadgets as “locally installed mini-applications that provide a rich set of system access APIs.” A gadget therefore had access capabilities that went beyond drawing a static panel.
Microsoft removed the platform because of security exposure
Microsoft’s compatibility guidance states plainly: “Gadgets also present a security risk to users.” The guidance explains that even a gadget that appears benign could be exploited through vulnerabilities in the platform. In practice, the risk came from allowing locally installed gadget code to interact with the system while looking like a small desktop accessory.
Microsoft’s security documentation also says that, after a user accepts the warning, a gadget runs “with all of the permissions associated with the user’s login account.” That is the important distinction from a decorative desktop element: a gadget could operate with the rights of the signed-in account. If that account could read files, access devices or make system changes, the gadget’s effective access followed those permissions.
Removing the platform was therefore a security decision, not a decision that clocks, weather panels or CPU meters had stopped being useful. The functionality can be recreated by other software, but the original Microsoft runtime is no longer a supported Windows 10 component.

Windows 10’s support status changes the risk calculation
Microsoft says support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. Windows 10 PCs continue to operate after that date, but ordinary security updates, fixes and technical support have ended. Eligible PCs can receive Extended Security Updates through October 12, 2027; eligibility and enrollment determine whether a particular computer receives those updates.
This matters when you consider a downloaded gadget host. Running additional desktop code on an operating system outside normal support gives you two separate trust questions: whether the host and each gadget are trustworthy, and whether the operating system still receives the protections needed to address newly discovered weaknesses. Extended Security Updates can change the second question for eligible machines, but they do not turn an unofficial gadget package into Microsoft-supported software.
Keep Windows Security and your browser current where possible, and do not use the end of Windows 10 support as a reason to bypass warnings or install a package from an unknown download mirror.
Your practical options
Windows 11 Widgets: the supported dashboard model
Microsoft’s current Widgets documentation applies to Windows 11. Widgets are interactive cards on a dashboard that can show weather, news, stocks, photos and similar information. You can add, remove, arrange, resize and customize cards, then open the Widgets board from the taskbar or with Windows+W.
This is a supported Microsoft experience, but it is not a reinstatement of the Windows 7 Sidebar. The board opens as a dashboard rather than leaving independent gadgets scattered over the Windows 10 desktop. If you want information in one controlled panel and can use Windows 11, this is the closest first-party direction.

GadgetPack: a third-party host for the legacy layout
GadgetPack’s publisher says that GadgetPack, formerly called 8GadgetPack, “makes it possible to use Gadgets on Windows 11 / 10.” The publisher lists examples including CPU Meter and Desktop Calculator. That statement is a compatibility claim from the publisher, not independent safety certification from Microsoft or a guarantee that every individual gadget is secure.

A host can reproduce the familiar experience: small windows that remain on the desktop, can be repositioned and can be used alongside other applications. The trade-off is that you are installing a desktop program and then choosing which additional gadget code to run. A calculator and a system monitor may look simple, but the host’s trustworthiness and the provenance of each gadget still matter.
Other downloaded desktop utilities
You may find individual clock, weather or monitoring utilities that do not use a gadget host. They can be easier to maintain because each utility has a narrower purpose, but they are still traditional desktop applications. Microsoft notes that traditional desktop apps do not use the same privacy-permission prompts as Microsoft Store apps and recommends installing desktop apps only from sources you trust.
Do not judge an installer solely by its appearance, the number of gadgets it advertises or a search-result ranking. A polished interface is not evidence that the code is safe.
Windows 11 Widgets versus a third-party gadget host
| Option | Where it runs | How information appears | Examples or information types | Trust position | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Classic Microsoft Desktop Gadgets | Vista/Windows 7 era | Sidebar or free-floating desktop items | Clocks, calendars, weather and system monitors | Deprecated and removed because Microsoft identified security risks | Historical reference, not a supported Windows 10 solution |
| Windows 11 Widgets | Windows 11 | Interactive dashboard opened from the taskbar or Windows+W | Weather, news, stocks, photos and more | Microsoft-supported Windows 11 feature | Users who want a managed, glanceable information board |
| GadgetPack | Publisher advertises Windows 10 and Windows 11 compatibility | Free-floating gadget-style elements | Publisher examples include CPU Meter and Desktop Calculator | Third-party software; compatibility is a publisher claim, so source and individual gadgets require scrutiny | Users who specifically want the legacy desktop arrangement |
How to install a legacy-style option more safely
There is no installation procedure that makes third-party gadgets equivalent to a supported Windows component. The following process limits exposure and gives you a way to undo the change.

- Decide whether the layout is worth the extra trust. If a dashboard is sufficient, use the supported Windows 11 Widgets model instead of adding a legacy host to Windows 10.
- Start at the publisher’s own site. For GadgetPack, confirm that the download is from the publisher rather than an advertising redirect, repackaging site or file-sharing mirror. The publisher’s compatibility statement is not a safety guarantee, so treat it as only one data point.
- Check the downloaded file before opening it. Use the file’s digital-signature or reputation information when available, and scan the installer with Windows Security. A clean scan is useful evidence, not proof that every later gadget is safe.
- Install the smallest possible set. Begin with one gadget that solves your immediate need, such as a CPU meter or calculator. Avoid installing a large catalog merely because it is offered.
- Review every installer screen. Decline unrelated bundled software, browser changes or settings you did not request. Stop if the installer demands unusual permissions for its stated purpose.
- Test one gadget at a time. Check whether the desktop remains responsive and whether the gadget behaves as expected before adding another. This makes an unwanted change easier to identify.
- Keep the host and operating system maintained. Apply available Windows 10 security coverage, including Extended Security Updates if your PC qualifies, and install host updates only from the publisher’s trusted channel.
- Remove anything suspicious immediately. Uninstall the host or gadget if it produces unexpected pop-ups, browser changes, unexplained network activity, performance problems or altered security settings. Then run a full Windows Security scan.
Choosing a gadget for a specific job
CPU or system monitoring
A CPU meter is useful when you want a persistent indication that a game, encoder or background process is consuming processor resources. A compact meter can be easier to glance at than opening Task Manager, but it is not a diagnostic tool by itself. If performance troubleshooting is the goal, confirm a meter’s indication with Windows’ own system-monitoring tools rather than assuming the gadget’s reading explains the cause.
Clock and calendar
A floating clock or calendar is mainly a layout preference. Windows already displays time and date, so the additional value is visibility, multiple time zones or a larger calendar surface. Do not grant a clock more access than its function requires, and be cautious if a simple time display asks for unrelated permissions.
Weather and news
Weather and news require data connections and may involve account, location or content-personalization settings. Windows 11 Widgets provide these categories in a Microsoft dashboard. On Windows 10, a third-party panel should be evaluated for its data practices as well as its visual design; a weather display is not automatically private just because it is small.
Calculator and other tools
A desktop calculator can be convenient when you work across several windows, but convenience does not justify installing an entire bundle from an uncertain source. Prefer the narrowest installation that meets the need, and remove it when you no longer use it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTroubleshooting common problems
The old Sidebar option is missing
That is expected on Windows 10. The Microsoft platform was removed, so searching Control Panel or Windows Features for a Sidebar checkbox will not restore it. Use Windows 11 Widgets on a supported Windows 11 installation or consider a carefully sourced third-party host.

A Windows 7 gadget will not run
Compatibility is not guaranteed merely because the gadget worked on Windows 7. The original runtime is no longer a Windows 10 feature, and a third-party host may support only particular gadget formats. Remove the gadget if it fails repeatedly rather than downloading replacement runtime files from an unknown site.
The desktop becomes slow or unstable
Close the gadget host and see whether the problem stops. If it does, disable or uninstall the newest gadget first, then scan the system. Running several constantly updating panels can add background work, but instability can also indicate a faulty or untrusted component.
A gadget changes browser or security settings
Treat that behavior as a warning, not as a normal setup step. Disconnect the host from use, uninstall it through Settings > Apps > Apps & features, restore settings you recognize, and run a full security scan. If the behavior persists, seek help from a qualified technician rather than reinstalling the same package.
Which choice makes sense?
- Choose Windows 11 Widgets if you want weather, news, stocks, photos or similar information in a supported dashboard and can use Windows 11.
- Consider GadgetPack or another third-party host only if free-floating, Windows 7-style gadgets are the main requirement and you are willing to verify the publisher, scan the installer and limit the gadgets you run.
- Skip legacy gadget software if the computer handles sensitive work, cannot receive current security coverage or has no need for persistent desktop panels.
The original Microsoft gadgets are gone from Windows 10 for a reason: they were locally installed code with substantial account-level access, and Microsoft identified the platform as a security risk. A modern dashboard is the lower-trust path; a third-party host can reproduce the old appearance, but it should be treated as an additional software supply-chain decision rather than as a hidden Windows feature.
