Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →“Windows 10 installation has failed” is a generic rollback message, not a diagnosis. The useful clues are the hexadecimal error code, the percentage at which Setup stopped, and the setup phase that failed. Record those details, read the Panther and SetupDiag logs, then apply the matching fix before trying again. Start with the low-risk steps Microsoft identifies most often: unplug nonessential USB devices, install pending Windows and hardware-driver updates, temporarily remove non-Microsoft antivirus, restart the PC, and verify free disk space.
There is also a lifecycle issue in 2026: Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. An existing installation continues to run, but it no longer receives free Windows Update security fixes or technical assistance. If the hardware supports it, moving to Windows 11 is Microsoft’s recommended direction; if you must install Windows 10, use the troubleshooting process below.

- Record whether this was an in-place upgrade or a clean install. An upgrade attempts to keep applications, settings, and personal files. A clean install from bootable media does not migrate applications or settings and requires the appropriate license information.
- Back up important files before another attempt. Rollbacks usually restore the previous installation, but a clean install or a failed storage device can make recovery harder.
The code and phase determine which branch of troubleshooting is worth your time. A generic message by itself cannot identify a bad driver, a blocked application, a damaged ISO, or insufficient storage.

Understand the Windows Setup phase
Windows Setup proceeds through several stages. Identifying the stage narrows the likely cause.
| Setup stage | What is happening | Common failure pattern |
|---|---|---|
| Downlevel | Setup runs inside the existing Windows installation and prepares files, checks compatibility, and stages drivers. | Blocked applications, incompatible drivers, and insufficient space can stop the process before the first reboot. |
| Safe OS | The computer boots a temporary Windows environment to apply the new system image. | Drivers, disk encryption, storage problems, or firmware issues are frequent suspects. |
| First boot / online configuration | The new installation starts and configures devices and Windows components. | Driver failures are common. |
| Second boot | Setup continues device and service configuration after another restart. | Antivirus and other filter drivers can interfere. |
| Windows Welcome | The installation reaches the first-run experience and final user configuration. | Failures here occur after most of the system migration has completed, so the rollback logs are especially important. |
Read the logs before changing anything
Windows stores the most useful setup evidence in text and XML files. Open them in Notepad or another text editor and search for the error code, “rollback,” “failure,” and the name of a driver or application.
- During or immediately after the failed attempt, inspect
C:$WINDOWS.~BTSourcesPanthersetupact.logandC:$WINDOWS.~BTSourcesPanthersetuperr.log. - If the computer has completed the first boot of the new environment, also inspect
C:WindowsPanther. - For device-installation details, check
C:WindowsINFsetupapi.dev.logandC:WindowsINFsetupapi.app.log. - Run Microsoft SetupDiag against the setup logs. SetupDiag groups known failure patterns and points to the phase and rule that matched.
- For compatibility failures, open the newest
CompatData<date-time>.xmland any*_APPRAISER_HumanReadable.xmlfiles. These identify applications, drivers, or compatibility blocks that Setup detected.
Copy the relevant lines somewhere safe before cleaning temporary setup files. A code in the final summary can be less specific than the first error written in setuperr.log.

0xC1900101 family |
Generic rollback, usually an incompatible driver; disk encryption or hardware can also be involved. | Update or remove suspect drivers, disconnect peripherals, use a clean boot, and inspect Panther logs for the named device or driver. |
0xC1900208 |
An incompatible application or driver is blocking the upgrade. | Use the compatibility XML to identify the blocker, update or uninstall it, clear stale setup caches if required, then run /compat scanonly before the real upgrade. |
0x8007025D-0x2000C |
Corrupt ISO metadata, a problem with the installation medium, storage, or RAM. | Redownload the ISO, recreate the installation media, and test storage and memory if the same code returns. |
0xC1900200-0x20008 |
The device does not meet Windows 10 minimum requirements. | Check Microsoft’s Windows 10 specifications and compatibility information before trying another installation. |
0x80070070 variants or 0xC190020E |
Insufficient free disk space. | Free space on the system drive. Microsoft states that an upgrade needs 16 GB free for 32-bit Windows 10 or 20 GB for 64-bit Windows 10. |
0xC1900107 |
Cleanup from an earlier installation attempt is still pending. | Restart Windows, then run Disk Cleanup if the pending state remains. |
Apply the general fixes in a safe order
1. Remove variables from the hardware setup
Shut down the PC and unplug nonessential USB devices and other peripherals: external drives, hubs, printers, cameras, game controllers, card readers, and specialty adapters. Leave only the keyboard, mouse, display, network connection needed for activation, and the installation media. A peripheral driver can be loaded at a different setup phase than it is in normal Windows, so disconnecting it is a useful test even when the device works normally.
2. Install pending updates and restart
In the current Windows installation, open Windows Update and install all pending updates. Check the device manufacturer’s support pages or Device Manager for hardware-driver updates, especially for storage controllers, chipsets, graphics, network adapters, and Bluetooth. Restart after updates complete. The restart matters because Setup can fail when a previous update, driver installation, or servicing operation is still waiting for a reboot.
3. Temporarily remove non-Microsoft antivirus and filter software
Uninstall non-Microsoft antivirus temporarily rather than merely closing its window; its filter driver may load before the desktop and interfere with the second-boot stage. Follow the product’s own removal instructions, restart, and reinstall it after Windows is stable. This step does not replace normal security protection: use a trusted security configuration while the third-party product is absent and do not leave the machine unprotected longer than necessary.
4. Check free space on the system drive
Open File Explorer, select the Windows system drive, and choose Properties to view available space. For an upgrade, Microsoft specifies at least 16 GB free on 32-bit Windows 10 and 20 GB on 64-bit Windows 10. If space is tight, remove or move large personal files, uninstall unused applications, empty temporary files with Storage settings or Disk Cleanup, and then restart. Do not delete the $WINDOWS.~BT folder while you still need its logs.
5. Clear a pending previous attempt
For 0xC1900107, restart first. If Setup still reports pending cleanup, open Disk Cleanup, choose Clean up system files, select the previous Windows installation or temporary setup files that Windows offers, and run the cleanup. Reboot once more before launching Setup.
Driver and hardware troubleshooting for 0xC1900101
Microsoft describes 0xC1900101 as a generic rollback code that usually indicates an incompatible driver. The code does not identify the exact device, so combine it with setupapi.dev.log, Panther entries, and the failure phase.

- Please remember that this DVD does not come with a KEY CODE. You will need to obtain a Windows Key Code in order to use the reinstall option
- In Device Manager, look for warning icons and expand storage controllers, display adapters, network adapters, Bluetooth, and sound devices.
- Install current drivers from the hardware manufacturer. If a recently installed driver coincides with the problem, roll it back or uninstall the device and let Setup rediscover it.
- Disconnect optional hardware and disable overclocking or nonstandard firmware settings while testing.
- If encryption is involved, verify that the drive is accessible and that you have the recovery information before changing encryption settings.
- Perform a clean boot to prevent third-party services from loading, then retry with only essential startup services enabled.
If the rollback names a specific device, fix that device first; replacing unrelated drivers can add variables without addressing the cause.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Resolve blocked applications and compatibility checks
With 0xC1900208, the compatibility scan has found an application or driver that Setup will not allow. Open the newest compatibility XML files and look for the blocking item, its publisher, and the requested action.
Recommended Free Tools
- Update the application or driver if a Windows 10-compatible release exists.
- If no compatible release exists, uninstall the blocker using Settings > Apps > Apps & features or the vendor’s removal utility.
- Restart so services and filter drivers are unloaded.
- Clear stale setup caches only after saving the logs you need.
- Run Setup’s compatibility-only check with
/compat scanonly. Proceed with the upgrade only when the scan no longer reports the blocking item.
Repair damaged installation media
The 0x8007025D-0x2000C combination can indicate corrupt ISO metadata or a fault in the storage medium, system storage, or RAM. Download a fresh ISO from Microsoft and recreate the USB instead of reusing a suspect image or flash drive. If the failure repeats with newly created media, test the destination drive and memory; recurring corruption can be a hardware symptom rather than an installer problem.
Microsoft’s Media Creation Tool can create bootable USB media. If it reports 0x80004005-0xa001a, Microsoft says the USB drive is using GPT and must be converted to MBR for that workflow. Converting partition style erases the drive, so copy anything important from the USB first and verify that you selected the correct disk before changing it.
Choose between an upgrade and a clean install
In-place upgrade
Use an in-place upgrade when preserving personal files, installed applications, and settings is important. It requires enough free space, compatible drivers and applications, and a healthy existing Windows installation. Start Setup from within Windows, complete the compatibility scan, and keep the computer connected to reliable power during restarts.
Clean install
Use bootable media for a clean installation when the existing system is badly damaged or repeated in-place upgrades fail for reasons you cannot remove. A clean install does not migrate applications or settings and requires license information. Back up files, export browser and application data, and confirm that you have installation media and drivers for the target hardware before deleting partitions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsRetry once with a controlled configuration
After applying the code-specific fix, make one deliberate attempt rather than repeating the same process.
- Restart Windows and confirm the system drive has the required free space.
- Connect only essential peripherals.
- Ensure pending Windows and hardware-driver updates are complete.
- Keep non-Microsoft antivirus and other incompatible filter software removed during the test.
- Use verified installation media and run the compatibility-only scan when a blocker was previously reported.
- Watch the percentage and phase. If Setup rolls back again, stop and capture the new code and logs instead of starting another blind attempt.
If the same code returns with different media and minimal hardware, the logs should guide a storage, memory, firmware, or driver investigation. If the code changes, treat the new code as the primary clue; the original issue may already be resolved.
What Windows 10 support ending means for this installation
Microsoft’s stated end-of-support date was October 14, 2025. Windows 10 does not stop booting on that date, but free Windows Update security fixes and Microsoft technical assistance are no longer provided. Successful installation therefore does not restore a supported lifecycle. Check whether the computer meets Windows 11 requirements before investing substantial time in a new Windows 10 deployment.
Quick Recap
As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements and shared DLL problems, while offering cleanup, settings tweaks, vulnerability checks, and an app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7; its free trial is offered by category for at least two days before a paid subscription. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, results vary, and no tool repairs every installation failure.
