Windows 10 has no universal “FPS boost” switch. The dependable gains come from measuring your baseline, selecting the correct GPU, updating or rolling back drivers, removing background and thermal limits, and lowering the game settings that actually bottleneck your system. These changes can improve average FPS, 1% lows, frame-time consistency, loading or input latency independently; not every useful change raises the average frame rate.
Windows 10 Home and Pro 22H2 reached end of mainstream support on October 14, 2025. The operating system still runs, but normal feature and security updates have ended; eligible hardware can be upgraded to Windows 11, while Extended Security Updates are a temporary, program- and region-dependent bridge. See Microsoft’s Windows 10 lifecycle and end-of-support guidance. NVIDIA has stated that GeForce Game Ready and Studio drivers would continue Windows 10 support for an additional year, but that is not an indefinite promise or a guarantee of equal support in every future game (NVIDIA’s statement).
Measure before changing anything
A trustworthy comparison uses the same game, map, route, resolution, graphics preset, frame cap and display mode after every change.
- Restart the PC and let background updates finish.
- Run the same repeatable section for several minutes; an opening menu is not a representative test.
- Record average FPS, 1% lows, 0.1% lows, frame time, GPU utilization, GPU clock and temperature, CPU utilization by core or thread, CPU clock and temperature, RAM and VRAM use, resolution or render scale, refresh rate, frame cap, driver version, Windows build and game version.
- Change one related group of settings at a time, then launch the game fresh and repeat the test.
- Keep a simple change log and retain the previous setting until the result is confirmed.
Average FPS measures throughput. The 1% and 0.1% lows expose severe dips, while frame-time graphs show whether frames arrive evenly. NVIDIA FrameView can capture these metrics, latency-related data, power information and hardware or driver details on Windows 10 and later; its documentation is available in the FrameView user guide. An in-game benchmark is also suitable if it is repeatable.

Apply the low-risk Windows changes first
Turn on Game Mode, then test it
Go to Start → Settings → Gaming → Game Mode and switch it on. Microsoft describes Game Mode as prioritizing gaming work when other activity competes for resources, which can make frame rates more sustainable; it is not a guaranteed percentage increase. Benchmark with it on and leave it enabled unless a particular game or driver combination performs worse. Microsoft’s explanation is in the Game Mode overview and technical documentation.
Stop unused recording and capture
Open Start → Settings → Gaming → Captures. Disable background recording and automatic capture if you do not use them. Recording can consume CPU, GPU, storage bandwidth and disk space, but its impact depends on the encoder, game and hardware.
Keep or disable Game Bar deliberately
In Start → Settings → Gaming → Xbox Game Bar, disable the overlay if you never use it, or remove unnecessary widgets and background capture. Keep it if you rely on its chat, monitoring or recording features. Do not assume every Xbox component always lowers FPS. Microsoft documents Game Bar’s Windows 10 display-driver behavior in its WDDM 2.1 feature documentation.
Use the correct power mode
Laptop testing should be done on AC power. Select the manufacturer’s performance or turbo profile when appropriate and verify that battery-saving behavior is not active. Windows’ power slider is separate from Game Mode, and OEM firmware and fan controls can dominate results (Microsoft power-slider documentation).
Recommended Free Tools
Maximum-performance profiles can increase heat, fan noise, power use and battery drain. A thermally constrained laptop may throttle sooner and perform worse at an unrestricted setting, so compare sustained performance rather than the first minute.

Limit background load
Before a benchmark, close browsers with many tabs, launchers downloading updates, video playback, cloud synchronization, RGB utilities and other CPU-, memory- or disk-heavy programs. In Task Manager, use Ctrl+Shift+Esc to identify the process rather than terminating unknown Windows services. Reducing desktop animations via Control Panel → System → Advanced system settings → Performance → Settings may help an old, memory-constrained machine but is rarely a major in-game improvement.
Confirm the game is using the intended GPU
On a laptop or hybrid-graphics system, open Start → Settings → System → Display → Graphics, add the game executable if necessary, choose Options, and select High performance where that label exists on your build. Verify the same choice in the NVIDIA or AMD control panel and the laptop manufacturer’s utility. A MUX switch, OEM graphics mode or external-monitor connection can change which GPU drives the display. Windows 10 labels vary by build; do not copy Windows 11-only instructions for windowed-game optimizations as if they were universal Windows 10 settings.
Test Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling
Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling (HAGS) became an optional feature with the Windows 10 May 2020 update for supported hardware and drivers. It moves part of scheduling work from the operating system’s software scheduler toward the GPU scheduling hardware and driver stack (Microsoft DirectX explanation).

Update when a new game or release specifically addresses your title, then reboot and measure. If instability began immediately afterward, reinstall the previous known-good version or roll back. Laptop owners should check the OEM support page first because customized power, display or hybrid-graphics features may require the manufacturer’s package. Use a clean installation only for corruption, conflicts or persistent driver faults; do not update BIOS, chipset, GPU and Windows simultaneously when you need to identify the cause.
Tune the settings that actually cost frames
Change settings according to the measured bottleneck, not a preset’s name. A “low” preset can still leave render resolution or a CPU-heavy option high.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Usually high-impact settings
- Render resolution or resolution scale.
- Ray tracing and path tracing.
- Shadows and contact shadows.
- Volumetric fog, clouds and global illumination.
- Reflections and screen-space reflections.
- View or object distance.
- Crowd, simulation and physics density.
- Hair, foliage and geometry quality.
Usually lower-impact settings
- Texture quality when VRAM has headroom.
- Anisotropic filtering.
- Minor post-processing effects.
- HUD and menu options.
Upscaling, dynamic resolution and frame generation
DLSS, FSR and XeSS can raise FPS by rendering internally at a lower resolution. Test their quality modes for softness, shimmering, ghosting and UI artifacts. Dynamic resolution trades image consistency for a target frame rate. Frame generation can increase displayed frames, but it does not turn a low base frame rate into equally responsive input; competitive players should prioritize a stable base rate and low latency.
Display mode, synchronization and frame caps
Test exclusive full-screen and borderless full-screen; the faster mode depends on the game engine, Windows build, display path and overlays. V-sync can remove tearing but may add latency or queuing when the system misses refresh. Variable refresh rate can make uneven delivery look smoother on a compatible display. A frame cap can reduce heat, fan noise, power use and frame-time variation. Choose a cap based on the monitor, synchronization method, game and preference rather than applying one universal number.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Identify the real bottleneck
| Pattern during the test | Likely limit | Useful response |
|---|---|---|
| GPU is near full load; lowering resolution or GPU-heavy settings raises FPS substantially; temperature or power is high. | GPU | Lower render scale, ray tracing, shadows, volumetrics and reflections; use a supported upscaler; improve cooling or consider a GPU upgrade. |
| GPU is well below full load; one or more CPU threads are saturated; lowering resolution changes little. | CPU | Reduce crowds, view distance, simulation and physics; close CPU-heavy background work; consider a CPU or platform upgrade for a higher target refresh rate. |
| RAM is near capacity, paging occurs, and stutters coincide with browsers or asset streaming. | System memory | Close memory-heavy applications, check dual-channel operation where supported, and add RAM if capacity remains the limit. Registry “memory optimizers” are not a substitute. |
| Texture streaming stalls and hitching appears near the GPU’s VRAM capacity. | VRAM | Lower textures, texture-streaming budget, resolution or ray tracing; retain high textures only with adequate headroom. |
| FPS starts high and falls after several minutes; clocks decline as temperatures rise. | Thermals | Clean dust and filters, improve case airflow, use a laptop stand as a secondary measure, and have thermal paste replaced by a competent owner or qualified service. |
| Long loads or streaming pauses occur while average FPS is unchanged. | Storage or shader compilation | Use a healthy SSD, retain reasonable free space, allow shader compilation to finish, and avoid deleting shader caches reflexively. |
Useful diagnostic commands are winver (Windows build), powercfg /getactivescheme (active power scheme), powercfg /list (available schemes), msinfo32 (System Information), dxdiag (DirectX diagnostics) and taskmgr (Task Manager). Drive-health information varies by model; use the manufacturer’s utility or Windows health data where supported.

- This product has been replaced by our latest generation. Please search for the SANDISK Optimus GX 7100 NVMe SSD
- HIGH-OCTANE GAMING. Experience speeds up to 7,250MB/s read and 6,900MB/s write (1-2TB models), with up to 35% faster performance than previous generation.
- PURPOSE-BUILT. Designed for serious on-the-go gamers, with a PCIe Gen4 interface and SANDISK’s next generation TLC 3D NAND.
- MORE TIME TO CLEAR THAT CHECKPOINT. Built with laptops and handheld gaming devices in mind, with up to 100% more power efficiency over the previous generation.
- DO MORE WITH DASHBOARD. Ensure your drive is optimized for prime performance with the downloadable WD_BLACK Dashboard (Windows only).
Reduce stutter and frame-time spikes
- Allow shader compilation to complete after a game or driver update. Rebuilding a deleted cache can temporarily make stutter worse.
- Keep frequently played, streaming-heavy games on an SSD with free space; an SSD primarily improves loading and asset streaming, not average FPS.
- Test Xbox, NVIDIA, AMD, Discord and Steam overlays individually rather than disabling everything at once.
- Stop browser video, recording, RGB, motherboard-monitoring and cloud-sync utilities one at a time.
- Check 1% and 0.1% lows, frame-time spikes, RAM and VRAM pressure, clocks and temperatures. Network or server problems can feel like rendering stutter even when the GPU is healthy.
Changes not to apply blindly
- Registry “FPS boost” packs, aggressive debloat scripts and random service disabling.
- Disabling the page file or virtual memory.
- Permanently disabling antivirus or other security features.
- Universal “Ultimate Performance” commands or forcing every vendor control-panel option to maximum performance.
- Disabling full-screen optimizations for every game.
- Random timer-resolution tools and real-time process-priority changes.
- Overclocking, undervolting or unsafe fan and power-limit changes without stability, temperature and recovery testing.
These changes can provide no measurable benefit while increasing heat, power use, crashes or diagnostic difficulty. If a tweak makes performance worse, restore the previous value, reboot if required, and retest the original workload.

Competitive and high-refresh play
Favor stable frame times, a sensible cap for the display and synchronization method, low latency, reduced shadows and effects, and minimal overlays. A lower but consistent base rate is preferable to unstable displayed frames.
Single-player image quality
Keep textures high when VRAM permits, use a quality upscaler, and cap at a rate the system can sustain. Spend performance on settings that materially improve the scene rather than on menu effects.
Desktop versus laptop
Desktop diagnosis emphasizes GPU utilization, CPU limits, RAM configuration and case airflow. Laptop diagnosis must also include AC power, OEM performance mode, hybrid graphics or MUX behavior, battery limits, manufacturer drivers and display routing.
When Windows tuning is not enough
Upgrade only after the measurements identify the constraint:
Quick Recap
- GPU-limited: a faster GPU is the direct remedy.
- RAM-limited: increase capacity or correct single-channel operation where the platform supports dual channel.
- Storage-limited: move the game to a healthy SSD for loading and streaming improvements.
- Thermally limited: clean or service cooling and improve airflow.
- CPU-limited: a CPU or platform upgrade is the solution for sustained high-refresh targets.
- Unsupported Windows 10: upgrade to Windows 11 if the PC meets Microsoft’s requirements, or use the applicable ESU program as a temporary security measure. ESU availability, enrollment terms and dates differ by edition, geography and consumer or business program; it does not restore normal feature support.
A reversible optimization sequence
- Benchmark and record the full configuration.
- Update the game and install a suitable official GPU driver.
- Reboot and confirm the intended GPU.
- Enable Game Mode and disable unused capture.
- Use AC power and an appropriate OEM performance profile on laptops.
- Check sustained temperatures, clocks, RAM and VRAM.
- Reduce the highest-impact game settings for the identified bottleneck.
- Test HAGS and overlays separately.
- Keep only changes that improve the measured result, and revert everything else.
