Windows 11 24H2 did not cause one universal gaming-crash bug. It exposed several different compatibility problems involving Auto HDR and windowed-game presentation, Easy Anti-Cheat, individual game patches, GPU drivers, overlays, and hardware stability. The fastest first test is to disable Auto HDR for the affected game, restart it, and compare borderless, windowed, and exclusive-fullscreen modes.
If the failure is a MEMORY_MANAGEMENT blue screen on an Intel Alder Lake-or-newer vPro system running an older Easy Anti-Cheat driver, investigate that separate Microsoft-documented issue instead.

The two-minute test
- Close the game completely.
- Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
- Select the game. Add its executable if it is not listed.
- Select Options.
- Choose Don’t use Auto HDR. If the control is available, also turn off Optimizations for windowed games.
- Select Save, then restart the game.
Microsoft documents this per-game setting path in its guide to Windows windowed-game optimizations. Auto HDR must be disabled before Windows allows windowed-game optimizations to be disabled. This targeted test preserves HDR in other games and gives you better evidence than turning HDR off globally.
Now compare borderless fullscreen, ordinary windowed, and genuine exclusive fullscreen. Some games label a borderless presentation as “fullscreen,” so the in-game label is not always conclusive.

Why Auto HDR could be involved
Windows 11’s windowed-game optimization path applies to compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running in windowed or borderless-windowed modes. It can move those games from the older blit presentation model to the newer flip model, reducing latency and enabling features such as Auto HDR and variable refresh rate on supported displays.
That presentation layer sits between the game engine and the display driver. A compatibility problem there can look like a game crash, a GPU-driver reset, a black screen, stuttering, or a Windows failure. Microsoft also states that enabling Auto HDR automatically enables windowed-game optimizations.
Reported symptoms have included freezes after launch or during scene changes, crashes to desktop, flickering or washed-out HDR, inconsistent frame pacing, and instability while switching displays or using Alt-Tab. These reports do not prove that Auto HDR caused every such failure; the same symptoms can come from a driver, game patch, overlay, monitor configuration, or unstable hardware.

The separate Easy Anti-Cheat problem
Microsoft documented a narrower 24H2 compatibility issue involving some systems with:
- an Intel Alder Lake-or-newer processor;
- the Intel vPro platform; and
- an older Easy Anti-Cheat driver, particularly one released before April 2024.
On affected configurations, launching or playing an Easy Anti-Cheat game could result in a system hang or a MEMORY_MANAGEMENT blue screen. This did not affect every Easy Anti-Cheat game or every Intel system. Microsoft applied a compatibility hold and marked this issue resolved on July 24, 2025, but the necessary Easy Anti-Cheat update depends on the game publisher. Details are in Microsoft’s resolved-issues record for Windows 11 24H2.
A MEMORY_MANAGEMENT stop code is not proof that Easy Anti-Cheat is responsible. Defective or overclocked memory, unrelated drivers, and other kernel-level faults can produce the same error. Match the processor, vPro, anti-cheat, and timing conditions before attributing it to this known issue.
Game-specific compatibility problems
Some older Ubisoft games, including Assassin’s Creed Origins and Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, were associated with 24H2 launch or in-game crashes. Star Wars Outlaws and Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora also received game-side compatibility fixes during the early 24H2 period.

These examples are not a complete affected-games list and do not demonstrate that Windows caused every crash. Publishers changed the situation through title updates, so install the current game build and check the publisher’s patch notes before relying on an old compatibility report. A game update can resolve a problem without any Windows update.
Use the symptom to narrow the cause
| What happens | Most useful suspects |
|---|---|
| Crash to desktop | Game bug or update regression, GPU driver, overlay, mod, corrupt files, or Auto HDR/windowed presentation. |
| Driver reset or black screen | GPU driver, HDR/display interaction, cable, monitor, refresh rate, multiple displays, GPU instability, or a Windows graphics-stack failure. |
| Complete system freeze | Kernel anti-cheat, GPU driver or hardware timeout, firmware/chipset issue, unstable memory, power, or thermal instability. |
MEMORY_MANAGEMENT blue screen |
Check the documented Intel vPro/Easy Anti-Cheat combination first, but also test memory and unrelated drivers. |
A practical troubleshooting sequence
- Confirm the pattern. Record whether the issue affects one game or several, and whether it began after installing 24H2, a game patch, or a GPU driver.
- Run the Auto HDR test. Disable it per game, restart the title, and compare borderless with exclusive fullscreen.
- Install updates. Apply the latest cumulative update available for your Windows branch, update the game, obtain Easy Anti-Cheat updates through the affected game, and install a current stable GPU driver.
- Remove variables. Disable Discord, Steam, and Xbox Game Bar overlays, recording software, ReShade, monitoring tools, mods, and GPU or CPU overclocks. If the problem began immediately after a driver update, test the previous known-good driver instead.
- Repair the game. Use the launcher’s verify or repair-files function.
- Check system evidence. Open Reliability Monitor for the crash date. In Event Viewer, inspect Windows Logs > Application for application errors and Windows Logs > System for display-driver resets, WHEA errors, or unexpected shutdowns.
- Simplify the display setup. If Alt-Tab or HDR switching is involved, test with one monitor, a known-good cable, and a fixed refresh rate.
- Test another game. Use the same HDR display, display mode, and driver. A single failing game points more strongly toward its files, patch, engine, or anti-cheat.
Reliability Monitor and Event Viewer often record symptoms rather than the root cause, so treat their entries as clues. Record the game version, Windows build, GPU model and driver, processor, monitor, display mode, HDR state, overlays, mods, and any blue-screen code.

sfc /scannow
Run them from an elevated Terminal or PowerShell window, then restart and retest. Do not treat them as a guaranteed fix for a title-specific crash.

Should you roll back Windows?
Rolling back Windows can restore a previously stable environment, but it removes newer security and feature updates, may be unavailable after the rollback window, and can leave the PC on a less-supported release. Use it only as a temporary emergency measure when the issue remains reproducible and blocks gaming after the targeted tests and official updates.
Microsoft’s status information lists Windows 11 25H2 as newer than 24H2. Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro editions are scheduled to reach end of updates on October 13, 2026. Moving to a newer supported release may be sensible, but do not upgrade or roll back blindly while a device-specific compatibility hold or an active game-driver conflict remains unresolved. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 24H2 release-status page.

The strongest explanation depends on the pattern:
- Only one borderless or windowed DirectX 10/11 game fails: Auto HDR and windowed-game optimizations are plausible triggers.
- Several Easy Anti-Cheat games hang or blue-screen on the documented Intel vPro platform: investigate the anti-cheat compatibility issue and publisher update.
- Only one older Ubisoft title fails: update and repair that game before blaming Windows globally.
- Every game fails after a driver, overclock, firmware, or display change: investigate that shared system layer.
Disabling Auto HDR is a fast, reversible diagnostic—not proof that the Windows feature is universally defective. Likewise, a fix for Easy Anti-Cheat does not establish that Auto HDR or a GPU-driver regression has been fixed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does disabling Auto HDR fix every Windows 11 24H2 game crash?
No. It tests one interaction involving Windows’ windowed-game presentation path. Driver faults, game patches, overlays, anti-cheat, mods, and hardware instability can cause similar symptoms.

Why does a game work in exclusive fullscreen but not borderless mode?
Borderless and windowed games can use Windows’ newer presentation path for compatible DirectX 10/11 titles. Exclusive fullscreen may bypass that specific path, although some games calling their mode “fullscreen” are actually borderless.
Should I reinstall Windows 11?
Not as a first step. Test Auto HDR, display modes, updates, drivers, overlays, game files, and system stability first. Reinstallation is unlikely to repair a title-specific compatibility or anti-cheat problem.
Is Easy Anti-Cheat responsible for every 24H2 blue screen?
No. Microsoft’s documented case was limited to particular Intel Alder Lake-or-newer vPro systems using older Easy Anti-Cheat drivers. Memory instability and unrelated kernel drivers can also cause blue screens.
