Yes—Microsoft documented a real compatibility problem between Windows 11 version 24H2 and select Ubisoft games. Affected titles could become unresponsive while launching, freeze during loading or gameplay, or display a black screen. Microsoft responded with safeguard holds that prevented some affected PCs from being offered the update through Windows Update.
However, this is now primarily a historical compatibility issue rather than an active blanket block. Ubisoft hotfixes addressed Star Wars Outlaws and Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, and Microsoft lifted that safeguard hold on December 5, 2024. As of August 18, 2026, Windows 11 version 25H2 is the current release, while Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro reach the end of updates on October 13, 2026. Microsoft’s current release-health information should take priority over old advice to force-install 24H2.

What happened with Windows 11 24H2?
The issue did not affect every Ubisoft game or every Windows 11 PC. Microsoft described a narrower failure pattern involving certain titles: the game might stop responding at launch, freeze while loading, lock up during active play, or show a black screen.

That distinction matters. A crash reported after a Windows update is not automatically evidence of the documented Microsoft issue. Graphics drivers, overlays, mods, corrupted files, Ubisoft Connect, DRM checks, hardware instability, and unrelated game bugs can produce similar symptoms.

Microsoft used a safeguard hold to reduce the risk. A safeguard hold temporarily withholds a feature update from devices associated with a known compatibility problem. It does not necessarily indicate that a PC failed Windows 11’s hardware requirements, and it does not repair a game already installed on the computer.
Which Ubisoft games were associated with the problem?
| Game | Original status | Later status |
|---|---|---|
| Assassin’s Creed Origins | Included in Microsoft’s documented Ubisoft compatibility issue | Do not assume that every later crash is caused by 24H2; check current game and Windows support information |
| Assassin’s Creed Odyssey | Included in the documented issue | Check current title-specific updates and troubleshooting guidance |
| Assassin’s Creed Valhalla | Included in the documented issue | Check current title-specific updates and troubleshooting guidance |
| Star Wars Outlaws | Initially included | Ubisoft hotfixes addressed the issue; Microsoft lifted the hold on December 5, 2024 |
| Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora | Initially included | Ubisoft hotfixes addressed the issue; Microsoft lifted the hold on December 5, 2024 |
The list identifies titles Microsoft associated with the issue at the time. It does not establish that all Ubisoft games—or every crash in one of these games—were caused by Windows 11 24H2. Microsoft’s details are reproduced in its Microsoft-hosted discussion.
Why Windows Update might not offer 24H2
If Windows Update did not offer version 24H2, a safeguard hold may have been responsible. The PC could continue running its existing Windows version while Microsoft waited for a compatible fix or updated compatibility data.

Advanced users and administrators may encounter these identifiers in Microsoft guidance:
54437462— associated with the Ubisoft issue involving the Assassin’s Creed titles.54580160— associated with Star Wars Outlaws and Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora; Microsoft said this hold was lifted on December 5, 2024.
These IDs are diagnostic details, not steps consumers should try to remove. Microsoft advises against manually forcing a feature update while a relevant safeguard hold remains active. Do not use the Installation Assistant or installation media simply because Windows Update has not offered 24H2.
Is the compatibility issue fixed?
The original situation changed in stages. Microsoft said Ubisoft hotfixes resolved the issue for Star Wars Outlaws and Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, after which their safeguard hold was removed on December 5, 2024.

Do not confuse that Ubisoft-specific problem with a separate Easy Anti-Cheat issue. Microsoft documented cases in which older Easy Anti-Cheat drivers could cause some systems to stop responding or show a MEMORY_MANAGEMENT blue screen. That issue primarily involved certain systems with Intel Alder Lake or newer processors and vPro platforms, particularly where the driver was released before April 2024. Microsoft removed that separate safeguard hold on July 24, 2025. Microsoft’s resolved-issues page records the distinction.
A blue screen or full system hang therefore should not automatically be labelled the Ubisoft game issue. It calls for investigation of anti-cheat software, drivers, memory, and hardware as well.
What to do if a Ubisoft game still crashes
- Check the installed Windows version. Open Settings > System > About and review Windows specifications, or press Win+R, enter
winver, and press Enter. - Install available Windows updates through the normal path. In August 2026, do not manually target 24H2 when Windows offers a newer supported release or when a compatibility hold is active.
- Update the game and Ubisoft Connect. Install all available patches through Ubisoft Connect or the storefront where you own the game, then restart the launcher. This is especially important for Star Wars Outlaws and Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, whose resolution involved Ubisoft hotfixes.
- Verify the game files. Use the repair or verify-files function in Ubisoft Connect or your storefront. Menu names vary between clients and versions.
- Update the graphics driver. Use the official support page for NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel. If the problem began immediately after a driver update, consider a supported rollback rather than installing generic driver-updater software.
- Temporarily disable overlays and injectors. Test without Ubisoft Connect, Discord, Xbox Game Bar, GPU recording tools, performance monitors, and mods. Re-enable them individually after testing.
- Restart the PC. This is useful after Windows, driver, launcher, game, or anti-cheat updates.
- Match the symptom to the likely category. A launch freeze, loading freeze, gameplay lockup, or black screen resembles the documented game issue. A blue screen, Ubisoft Connect login failure, DRM error, or crash occurring only with a particular overlay points elsewhere.
- Contact Ubisoft support if the problem is title-specific. Include the game, Windows build, GPU driver version, crash timing, error message, and whether disabling overlays changed the result.
Do not immediately reinstall Windows. A single game crashing is not, by itself, a reason for a clean installation.

Should you uninstall the game to get Windows 11 24H2?
No—not as a first step. Removing a game might change the compatibility conditions detected by Windows Update, but it is not a guaranteed fix. It may leave launcher or driver components behind, cannot correct an unrelated crash, and creates unnecessary download and save-data risks.
Update the game first and check Microsoft’s current release-health information. If a safeguard was lifted and Windows Update still has not refreshed, Microsoft-hosted guidance says the offer can take up to 48 hours to appear; restarting may help. Do not bypass an active hold.
What if Windows Update still does not offer 24H2?
The missing offer may reflect another driver or device safeguard, a phased rollout, managed-device policy, stale Windows Update metadata, or the fact that the PC is now being offered Windows 11 25H2 instead.

Should you install Windows 11 24H2 now?
For a decision made in August 2026, there is generally no reason to manually target 24H2. Windows 11 25H2 is the latest Windows 11 version as of August 18, 2026, and Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro editions are scheduled to stop receiving updates on October 13, 2026.
Install the Windows version Microsoft offers for your device after its normal compatibility checks. A Windows 10 PC that has never installed 24H2 cannot experience a 24H2-specific failure, although it can still encounter separate game, driver, launcher, or Windows-update problems. Likewise, users already on 25H2 should identify their exact build and consult current 25H2 guidance rather than applying a workaround written for 24H2.

The Bottom Line
The Windows 11 24H2/Ubisoft compatibility issue was real but limited to select games and is no longer a reason to force, avoid, or uninstall software on its own. Keep the game, Ubisoft Connect, Windows, and graphics drivers updated; follow the Windows release offered for your PC; and treat blue screens, launcher failures, and unrelated crashes as separate diagnostic problems.
