First identify what VLC is playing: local VOD files, YouTube video URLs, or a stream handed to VLC by another tool. If it stops exactly when an item ends, check the playlist queue and repeat mode. If it stops mid-video, or the next YouTube URL fails, a repeat setting cannot repair an unavailable video or broken stream.
Find out which playback path is stopping
The fix depends on the source. A local file can play without relying on YouTube or an extractor; a YouTube URL or a stream piped into VLC depends on the video remaining accessible and the source tool continuing to work.
- Local files: VLC is playing videos stored on your computer. Check that the expected next file is in the playlist and still exists at its saved location.
- YouTube URLs: The playlist contains web addresses. Each entry depends on YouTube access and VLC’s ability to open that URL.
- Stream from another tool: A tool such as yt-dlp is supplying media to VLC. Check both VLC and the tool’s output for an error.
- YouTube’s own playlist: If playback is actually in YouTube, use YouTube’s loop control rather than changing VLC’s queue.
Note whether playback ends at the end of a video or stops partway through. Record the VLC version and any displayed error before changing settings; these clues separate a queue problem from a failed source.
If VLC stops exactly at the end of a video
- Open VLC’s playlist. In the VLC 3.0.x workflow described by a third-party guide, the shortcut is Ctrl+L; menus and button locations can differ in other versions. Check your installed VLC version and confirm the interface matches before following version-specific steps.
- Look at the queue and verify that the expected next VOD is actually listed. If it is missing, add it to the playlist.
- Choose the repeat behavior that matches your goal. Repeat All cycles through the list; repeating one item plays that item again rather than advancing through the queue. VLC button labels and locations vary by version.
- If the next entry is a local file, confirm it exists and has not been moved. A third-party VLC 3.0.x guide updated in July 2026 notes that saved playlists may store absolute paths, which can break after files are moved. Treat this as version-specific guidance, not a guarantee about every playlist format.
Do not assume repeat mode will skip or repair a failed item. A historical 2016 VideoLAN developer discussion describes interactions between failed entries and repeat modes, but it does not establish current VLC behavior for every version.

If a YouTube URL or yt-dlp stream stops
- Open the same VOD in YouTube and confirm it is still available to you. A removed, private, age-restricted, region-limited, or otherwise inaccessible video will not become playable because VLC repeats the queue.
- Check whether the entry is a direct YouTube URL or is being supplied by a separate program. If you use yt-dlp, inspect its output for an extraction, access, or download error and check that the stream has not ended.
- Test the URL or stream on its own, then test the next playlist entry separately. This helps determine whether one VOD is failing or the whole source workflow is affected.
- Check the installed yt-dlp version and its current YouTube support notes. YouTube changes can affect extractors, so a documented workflow is not a promise that every URL will work continuously.
yt-dlp documents piping media to VLC and handling playlists, but those are distinct workflows: a pipe example does not guarantee automatic continuation from one VOD to the next. See the yt-dlp documentation on output and streaming, its usage and options, and its YouTube notes. Site support and YouTube behavior can change.
If local files also fail to advance
Play a known-good local video and queue a second known-good file. This is a diagnostic test, not a guaranteed fix. If the second file plays, focus on the YouTube URL or tool supplying the stream. If local playback also stops, recheck the queue, repeat mode, the specific file that fails, and the VLC version. Change one thing at a time so you can tell which condition matters.

Choose the playback method that fits the rerun
