KB5077181 is a genuine Windows 11 cumulative security update released on February 10, 2026, for versions 24H2 and 25H2. Microsoft officially documents a fix for full-screen gaming-experience eligibility, WPA3-Personal Wi-Fi connectivity, Secure Boot certificate targeting, servicing reliability, and security issues. Separate testing and user reports associated the update with improvements to Nvidia black screens, game artifacts, Explorer.exe hangs, the taskbar, and Start menu—but Microsoft’s main KB summary does not promise a universal fix for Nvidia hardware, frame-rate problems, or every desktop-shell failure.
Important date context: this article covers the February 10, 2026 release. By August 18, 2026, later cumulative updates had superseded KB5077181, so most users should install the newest applicable update offered by Windows Update rather than seek out this older KB number.

- Security fixes: the update included security corrections. Detailed vulnerability information is handled separately through Microsoft’s Security Update Guide.
Microsoft’s release page also stated that it was aware of no known issues at the time of publication. That does not mean every hardware configuration was trouble-free after installation, because later user reports and third-party testing described problems that were not listed as confirmed Microsoft defects.
Did KB5077181 fix gaming and Nvidia problems?
It may have improved some affected systems, but the evidence does not support calling it a universal gaming or Nvidia fix.
Windows Latest associated January 2026 updates—particularly KB5074109—with reports of frame-rate drops, graphical artifacts, black screens, and instability in some games and GPU configurations. After installing the February update, Windows Latest reported that its testing no longer reproduced artifacts in Forza Horizon 5. The report also acknowledged uncertainty about whether the improvement came from KB5077181, an Nvidia driver update, or an interaction between the two.
That distinction matters. Windows 11 updates, Nvidia drivers, firmware, hybrid-GPU switching, display cables, and game updates can all affect the same symptoms. The safest description is that KB5077181 was reported to reduce or resolve problems on some systems, not that Microsoft guaranteed improved performance in every game or on every Nvidia GPU.

- Frame-rate drops or unusual performance after a Windows update.
- Graphical artifacts in games.
- A black screen while launching or closing graphics-heavy software.
- Temporary display loss followed by recovery.
- Freezes when closing a game or application.
- External-monitor, HDMI, or multi-monitor detection failures.
- Black screens after sleep or resume.
Windows Latest described these reports as connected to broader Microsoft fixes and said the February update addressed a documented black-screen problem. However, Microsoft’s public KB5077181 summary does not identify specific Nvidia GPU models or provide a detailed Nvidia-specific fix. Treat the Windows Latest findings as third-party testing and interpretation, while treating individual forum reports as anecdotal evidence rather than proof of prevalence or causation.
One reporting inconsistency is worth noting: Windows Latest referred to a 25H2 system moving to build 26200.7705, while Microsoft identifies KB5077181’s official 25H2 build as 26200.7840. Use Microsoft’s build number when verifying the update; the third-party number appears to be a reporting or testing inconsistency.
Why Explorer.exe, the taskbar, and Start menu are connected
Explorer.exe is more than the File Explorer window. It provides core Windows shell functions, including the desktop, taskbar, Start menu, system tray, and Explorer windows. When it hangs or crashes, Windows may continue running while the visible desktop becomes partly or completely unusable.

- 15.1" WQXGA OLED Glossy Display
- Gigabit LAN, 2x2 WiFi 7 (802.11be), Bluetooth 5.4
- 4.19 lbs. (1.90 kg),Windows 11 Home
Typical symptoms include:
- The taskbar disappears.
- Start does not open.
- The desktop vanishes or stops responding.
- The system tray is unavailable.
- File Explorer windows fail to launch or repeatedly hang.
- Restarting Windows Explorer temporarily restores the shell.
TechRadar reported a Microsoft-described issue in which Explorer.exe could hang during the first sign-in when certain applications were configured to start automatically, preventing the taskbar from appearing. Windows Latest reported that KB5077181 fixed or improved this behavior.

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Again, the wording needs care: Microsoft’s visible KB5077181 improvement list does not clearly spell out the complete Explorer.exe, taskbar, and Start-menu fix described in those reports. Similar symptoms can also come from startup applications, shell extensions, graphics drivers, corrupted system files, or later cumulative updates.
Temporary Explorer.exe recovery
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Find Windows Explorer.
- Right-click it and choose Restart.
If Windows Explorer is not listed, select Run new task in Task Manager, enter explorer.exe, and press Enter. This restores the shell temporarily; it does not prove that KB5077181 caused the problem or repair the underlying fault.
How to check whether KB5077181—or a later fix—is installed
Fastest method: winver
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
winver. - Press Enter.
- Confirm that the system is running Windows 11 24H2 or 25H2 and note the OS build.
The original KB5077181 builds were:
- 26100.7840 for Windows 11 24H2.
- 26200.7840 for Windows 11 25H2.
A higher build usually means a later cumulative update has replaced the February release and may already include its fixes plus newer security and reliability changes.
Settings method
- Open Settings.
- Select System, then About.
- Check Windows specifications and OS build.
- To review individual packages, open Settings > Windows Update > Update history.
Windows Store applications update separately from Windows updates. Microsoft also lists certain Copilot+ AI component updates only for compatible Copilot+ PCs, so those entries should not be assumed to apply to every Windows 11 machine.
How to install it safely
Because KB5077181 is no longer the newest cumulative update, use Windows Update to obtain the latest applicable release:
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install the offered cumulative update.
- Restart when prompted.
- Run
winveragain to verify the resulting build.
Before updating a gaming or work-critical PC, save important files, confirm that you can access recovery options, and record your current graphics-driver version. For competitive gaming, production, or specialized GPU systems, stage the update on representative hardware first rather than assuming a report about one configuration applies to yours.

Manual installation from the Microsoft Update Catalog
Manual installation is primarily useful for controlled deployments, WSUS-related work, or recovery—not for chasing an unconfirmed Nvidia fix. Microsoft’s documentation says the package may involve more than one MSU file and specifies the installation order. The package must match the Windows release and system architecture.
For a running Windows installation, Microsoft provides this elevated Command Prompt example:
DISM /Online /Add-Package /PackagePath:c:packageswindows11.0-kb5077181-x64_33d38563662e659ceb84fb8b65aa05ce5876f5a4.msu
The PowerShell alternative is:
Add-WindowsPackage -Online -PackagePath "c:packageswindows11.0-kb5077181-x64_33d38563662e659ceb84fb8b65aa05ce5876f5a4.msu"
Microsoft recorded a correction to the x64 MSU string on June 4, 2026. Check the live Microsoft release page rather than copying an old command from another site. Do not use a package intended for 24H2 on 25H2, or an x64 package on an ARM64 system.
What to do if problems remain
Game artifacts, frame drops, or crashes
- Restart the PC and test the same game under the same display settings.
- Install the latest compatible Nvidia driver from Nvidia or the driver supplied by the PC manufacturer.
- Check whether the issue occurs in one game or across several games.
- Temporarily test with one monitor and disable unusual overlays or GPU-tuning tools.
- Check for a newer Windows cumulative update, game patch, chipset update, or firmware update.
Do not conclude that KB5077181 failed solely because one title still stutters. The cause may be a driver branch, game update, thermal issue, overlay, hybrid graphics configuration, or hardware instability.
Nvidia black screen or external-display failure
- Check the monitor input, cable, docking station, and HDMI or DisplayPort connection.
- Press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B to restart the graphics driver.
- Test after a normal restart and separately after sleep/resume.
- Try disconnecting secondary monitors to identify a multi-monitor-specific failure.
- Update or, if the issue began immediately after a driver change, roll back the graphics driver using the manufacturer’s supported process.
- Install any newer Windows, firmware, chipset, or graphics update available for the system.
A black screen is not automatically an update defect. It can be caused by a display path, GPU driver, sleep-state failure, firmware, power problem, or hardware instability. Uninstalling KB5077181 is therefore not a guaranteed solution.
Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or audio problems
Some users reported DHCP or Wi-Fi failures, Bluetooth loss, and audio problems after installing the February update. These reports do not establish how widespread the issues were or prove that the update caused every case.
Recommended Free Tools
- Restart the PC and the affected network or Bluetooth device.
- Check Settings > Windows Update > Update history and install any newer cumulative update.
- Install current network, Bluetooth, chipset, and audio drivers from the PC or motherboard manufacturer.
- For Wi-Fi, verify whether the failure affects WPA3-Personal specifically or also affects WPA2 networks.
- Use Windows’ built-in network or device troubleshooting tools before considering removal of a security update.
Update installation errors
Windows Central documented user reports involving error codes 0x800F0991, 0x800F0983, 0x800F0922, 0x80073712, and 0x80096004. Reported troubleshooting attempts included temporarily disabling Windows Sandbox or Hyper-V, temporarily disabling third-party antivirus, running DISM repair commands, and performing a Windows 11 repair reinstall when ordinary fixes failed.

These are reported paths, not guaranteed remedies. If you temporarily disable antivirus, Hyper-V, or Windows Sandbox, restore the settings immediately after testing and understand that doing so can reduce protection or affect virtualization-dependent workloads.
For system-file repair, an elevated terminal may be used with commands such as:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Restart after the command completes, then retry Windows Update. If the component store or installation environment remains damaged, a repair reinstall may be safer than repeatedly forcing the same package. Back up important data before undertaking repair or reset procedures.

If Windows will not boot
BleepingComputer reported that Microsoft marked a separate boot-failure issue as resolved in KB5077181 and later updates. It affected a limited number of commercial physical devices running Windows 11 24H2 or 25H2 and could produce UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME after failed earlier updates. Microsoft did not report the issue as affecting home users or virtual machines in the cited coverage.
Devices already rendered unbootable may still require remediation. Use Windows Recovery Environment, manufacturer recovery tools, or an organization’s established deployment and backup process. Do not repeatedly interrupt startup or format the system before confirming that important data is backed up.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you install, delay, or uninstall KB5077181?
Install the current offered update when:
- Windows Update offers a newer cumulative update.
- You experienced the Explorer.exe, taskbar, or Start-menu behavior described above.
- Your system experienced January-update gaming or display problems.
- Security updates are overdue.
- You have a current backup or a workable recovery plan.
Stage or delay deployment when:
- The PC is used for live production, competitive gaming, medical, industrial, or other mission-critical work.
- The system relies on Hyper-V, Windows Sandbox, unusual storage drivers, legacy sleep states, or specialized GPU workflows.
- Your organization has not tested the update on representative hardware.
- You lack recovery media, backups, or an alternative work device.
Delaying should mean controlled testing and a defined deployment window—not permanently disabling Windows Update.
Uninstall only when necessary
Removing a security cumulative update can restore compatibility in some cases, but it also removes security and reliability changes. First check for a later cumulative update, driver update, firmware update, or a supported recovery option. If removal is unavoidable, use Settings > Windows Update > Update history > Uninstall updates when the option is available, and record the change so it can be reversed or reassessed.

What the headline does—and does not—prove
- Confirmed by Microsoft: the update is real, applies to Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2, and includes the documented full-screen gaming-eligibility, WPA3-Personal, Secure Boot, servicing, and security changes.
- Reported by Windows Latest: improvements involving game artifacts, Nvidia black screens, and Explorer.exe-related desktop behavior.
- Reported by some users: installation failures, DHCP or Wi-Fi problems, Bluetooth failures, audio glitches, Nvidia instability, external-display failures, and sleep-related black screens.
- Not established: that every Nvidia black screen, frame-rate drop, game crash, artifact, or Explorer.exe failure was fixed by KB5077181.
Calling KB5077181 “mandatory” is also imprecise. It was a security cumulative update delivered through normal Microsoft servicing channels, but timing depends on update policy, deferrals, eligibility, servicing channel, and whether a later cumulative update has superseded it.
The best practical conclusion is simple: if Windows Update offers a newer cumulative update, install that rather than manually hunting for KB5077181. If you are diagnosing a February 2026 machine, verify the build, compare the timing of Windows and Nvidia-driver changes, test the exact symptom, and keep recovery options available.

The Bottom Line
Bottom line: KB5077181 was a real February 2026 Windows 11 security update with several official fixes, including full-screen gaming eligibility and WPA3-Personal connectivity. Reports of better Nvidia, gaming, Explorer.exe, taskbar, and Start-menu behavior are useful but configuration-dependent—not a Microsoft guarantee. In September 2026, install the latest applicable cumulative update instead of manually targeting this superseded package, and keep a backup and recovery plan before troubleshooting or uninstalling updates.
